Ohev Yisrael Messianic Jewish Congregation
About Ohev Yisrael
Ohev Yisrael is a Messianic Jewish congregation founded on Yeshua Ha Mashiach (Jesus the Messiah) who, according to the Hebrew Scriptures, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. We worship the GOD of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in a style reflective of first century synagogues where followers of Mashiach Yeshua from both Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds assembled in unity. Our worship and observance seek to fulfill Yeshua's words for true worshippers, blending together the Torah (the word of GOD) and Ruach Hakodesh (truth and spirit). We rely on the Holy Scriptures as our source of truth and on the Holy Spirit for power, gifts, and direction in our lives.
Vision
Our vision is to pursue the restoration and unity of the Church, Israel, and the world under the Kingship of Yeshua the Messiah by serving as a Bible based, first century, new covenant congregation of Jews and Gentiles.
What is Messianic Judaism?
Messianic Judaism focuses upon the Mashiach (Messiah) of Yisrael (Israel). The Mashiach is the central tenet of the Pentateuch (The first five books of Scripture). Torah contains at least 75 passages which mention or are related to the Messiah. The writings of the Prophets contains at least 243 passages on the Mashiach. The Messiah is clearly the central focus of Scripture. Therefore the Mashiach is at the center of the Messianic believer's life. Yeshua (Jesus) was himself a Jew, raised in a Jewish home, of the

What is Messianic Judaism? Messianic Judaism is a biblically based movement of Jewish people who have come to accept Yeshua as the promised Jewish Messiah of Israel. Yeshua is the Hebrew name of Jesus, which means Salvation. Today, there are tens of thousands of Messianic Jews in the United States alone. Some have estimated the number to be as high as 350,000. Messianic Synagogues are springing up in almost every major city across the country including Sarasota. Other nations such as Israel, Canada, Russia, Mexico, France, England, Australia, Argentina, and South Africa are experiencing a growing revival of Messianic Judaism as well. IS IT JEWISH TO BELIEVE IN JESUS? To some, the concept of a Jew believing Yeshua seems to be a contradiction. The reason is, many people have a dichotomy set up in their minds. On the one hand, you have Jews and Judaism and on the other hand, Christians and Christianity. YOU ARE EITHER ONE OR THE OTHER...SO THE THINKING GOES. But this simple dichotomy is in reality not so simple. If we go back 2,000 years we find that Yeshua was a Jew living in a Jewish land among Jewish people. All the apostles were Jewish as well as the writers of the New Covenant and for many years this faith in Yeshua was strictly a Jewish one. From the Book of Acts and other historical evidence, many believe that in the first century there were literally hundreds of thousands of Messianic Jews In addition, there were Messianic Synagogues scattered throughout the Roman Empire and beyond.

BETH SHILOH MESSIANIC SYNAGOGUE At Beth Shiloh, we as Messianic Jews believe Yeshua (Jesus in Hebrew) is the Messiah, live a Jewish lifestyle, raise our children to be Jewish, and worship the G-d of Israel in Jewish manner. Messianic Synagogues are the heart of the Messianic Movement. Messianic Judaism is a movement of Jewish people from all walks of life who believe that Yeshua is the promised Messiah and the Savior for Israel and the world. Messianic Jews have not stopped being Jewish. On the contrary, we have continued to remain strongly Jewish in our identity, lifestyle and belief that Yeshua is the Jewish Messiah and the fulfillment of true Biblical Judaism. Messianic Judaism differs from Modern Rabbinic Judaism in that it predates the destruction of the second temple (70 CE) and focuses on the requirements of the Sacrificial System according to Torah (the five books of Moses). After the destruction of the temple, the Rabbis reorganized Judaism, adding many new laws, rules, and traditions. Today, their writings and commentaries (the Talmud etc.) form the foundation of Rabbinic Judaism. Messianic Judaism relies totally on the Scriptures. Our Faith is the Judaism of the Bible (Biblical Judaism) and is centered around the Messiah and the worldwide salvation He brings. We have direct access to HaShem (G-d) because of the great atoning work of the Messiah Yeshua who is the fulfillment of true Biblical Judaism.

Judaism is almost 6000 years in existence and it is through the Jews that the Creator God spoke through to share His message to mankind and to bring forth the Jewish Messiah. Judaism believes in the God of the Scriptures (Old Testament), and that His Word is true. Judaism differs on Jesus being the Jewish Messiah, Jesus being the Son of God, Jesus being the Son of Man.

Scriptural Judaism
Older than and much different from modern Rabbinical Judaism is what this essay will label Scriptural Judaism: how the Torah told the Israelites to be Jewish. It is not a modern division of Judaism. It cannot be practiced today because it relies on animal sacrifices, and Leviticus 17:8-9 has prohibited these since the Second Temple was destroyed in the year 70 C.E.. So there are no Scriptural Jewish congregations, as there are Rabbinically Jewish congregations and Messianic Jewish congregations. The Judaism of Yeshua's day was Scriptural Judaism. It was augmented by much rabbinical teaching, but its focus was the Temple and its rituals and sacrifices.
Judaism Divides
In the year 70 C.E. the Second Temple was destroyed. It was no longer possible to practice Scriptural Judaism. Without the Temple sacrifices to atone for their sins, what would the Jewish people do? At that time there were many sects of Judaism: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, Zealots, Nazarenes. All of these were different ways of augmenting Scriptural Judaism with other teachings. Only two of these sects survived: the Pharisees and the Nazarenes.

Pre-publication offer
We are glad to inform you that Baruch's book on Messianic Judaism is scheduled for publication towards the first half of 2002. The book is a review of the Messianic Movement in light of its goals and of the biblical data. Material includes running expositions of Galatians, Hebrews and extensive portions of Acts, Romans, Corinthians and Philippians, a discussion of the place of scripture vis a vis rabbinic tradition, a brief historical review and a discussion of the uniqueness of Christ and of the nature of sanctification. Although consciously non-technical, the book is designed to serve as a source of information and of theological evaluation for all and sundry. It is aimed at thinking Christians, Jewish or otherwise, and at Pastors who are wondering about the Messianic Movement. A chapter may be seen on ourwebsite: CLICK HERE
Friends and opponents of the Movement will find the book a useful and challenging resource.

Messianic Judaism: A Christian Missionary Movement
Messianic Judaism is a Christian movement that began in the 1970s combining a mixture of Jewish ritual and Christianity. There are a vast and growing numbers of these groups, and they differ in how much Jewish ritual is mixed with conventional Christian belief. One end of the spectrum is represented by Jews For Jesus , who simply target Jews for conversion to Christianity using imitations of Jewish ritual solely as a ruse for attracting the potential Jewish converts. On the other end are those who don't stress the divinity of Jesus, but present him as the "Messiah." They incorporate distorted Jewish ritual on an ongoing basis. The movement has received criticism from mainstream Christian leaders, for these groups claim to believe in the

Who is a Jew? Description : In modern times, because of assimilation and intermarriage, Jewish identity has become a subject of debate within the Jewish community. In this course, we survey some of the contemporary discussion concerning the Jewishness of various individuals and groups that have violated, or called into question, the traditional boundary between Jews and gentiles. Our goal is not to determine whether any individual or group is, in fact, Jewish; our goal is to understand the issues involved, to understand why the problem is a problem. Your responsibilities for the course: weekly response paper (1-2 pp.); active participation in the seminar; a research project. NOTE: in the syllabus I have listed for each week “ Response paper (pick one), ” that is, pick one of the topics listed for a 1-2 page response paper. Bring your response paper to class. If you have thought of a better and more interesting topic, write on that, but please warn me in advance by sending an email. The readings listed under “ Some additional readings if you are interested” are NOT assignments; I have simply listed various items that I have come across that might be worthy of your attention if you are stimulated by the topic of the week.
