Toward a Mature Messianic Judaism With the cry "Hashivenu" the Torah service concludes, imploring God to bring us back to himself. It is our conviction that HaShem brings Messianic Jews to a richer knowledge of himself through a modern day rediscovery of the paths of our ancestorsAvodah (liturgical worship), Torah (study of sacred texts), and Gemilut Chasadim (deeds of lovingkindness). Our goal is a mature Messianic Judaism. We seek an authentic expression of Jewish life maintaining substantial continuity with Jewish tradition. However, Messianic Judaism is energized by the belief that Yeshua of Nazareth is the promised Messiah, the fullness of Torah. Mature Messianic Judaism is not simply Judaism plus Yeshua, but is instead an integrated following of Yeshua through traditional Jewish forms and the modern day practice of Judaism in and through Yeshua. Messianic Judaism will only attain maturity when it has established communal institutions which are capable of expressing its ideals and transmitting them effectively to ourselves, to our children, and to a skeptical world. Values and Convictions of Hashivenu Messianic Judaism is a Judaism, and not a cosmetically altered "Jewish-style" version of what is extant in the wider Christian community.

Frequently Asked Questions About Jewish Renewal
Is Jewish renewal Orthodox Judaism? Reconstructionist? ...?

Jewish renewal is non-denominational (sometimes referred to as trans- or post-denominational) Judaism. It honors the important and unique role of each denomination, but does not seek to become a denomination itself. Because of its emphasis on direct spiritual experience and mystical or Kabbalistic teachings, Jewish renewal is sometimes referred to as Neo-Hasidic or Four Worlds Judaism (a reference to the "four worlds" of Jewish mysticism). While we seek to restore the spiritual vitality characteristic of the Hasidic movement of pre-war Europe, we believe, along with the Reconstructionists, that Judaism is an evolving religious civilization. This is what differentiates us from the Baal Tshuvah movement, which we refer to as Restorationist.
Is this "New Age" Judaism?
Not really. Jewish Renewal is sometimes referred to as "New Age" by people who do not know that meditation, dance, chant, and mysticism have been present in Judaism throughout the ages and not, as some mistakenly believe, patched on to Judaism from other cultures or made up out of whole cloth. Sadly, some of our authentic, time-honored beliefs and practices have been lost to assimilationism, leaving many contemporary Jews largely unaware of them. This is a major reason why so many spiritually sensitive Jews have sought spiritual expression in other faith traditions. It is an important part of ALEPH's mission to make the "hidden" treasures of Judaism known and accessible to these seekers.

Jewish Tradition Forgotten By Messianic Judaism
In Messianic Judaism, many of the Holy Days and traditions of Judaism are observed. They do not want to leave the Jewish identity, heritage, and culture behind. Most Messianic Jews appear to be much more "zealous for the Law (Torah)" than their Gentile Christian counterparts. However, there is one Jewish tradition that they have completely abandoned. Jewish Tradition and the Scriptures
The first line of many Messianic Jewish doctrinal statements reads like this: "We believe... that the Scriptures are verbally inspired of God and they are without error in the original writings, and they are the supreme and final authority for faith and life." Since the original writings have perished, we must rely on copies of the copies of Scripture. Right? Well, what did the original writings say would happen to themselves and what does Jewish tradition say about the preservation of the Scriptures? Jews Entrusted With Scripture.

Does the renaissance man exist today? Technically, no. Our knowledge has become to vast for anyone to know even one subject, particularly in the sciences, very well. In the general sense, yes, the Renaissance man can exist because the Renaissance man knows how to live. He is not so fixated on future accomplishment that he cannot enjoy each moment to the fullest. He sees beauty in everything God has made. He can appreciate literature or deep theology and he can work with his hands. He can speak intelligently on many subjects and has gotten his hands dirty in quite a few. This is life. filling every moment with meaning, enjoying the time we have on this earth.
We are all on a journey, walking through life. Some people put blinders on and stride toward some perceived goal only to be disappointed in the end. Some just plop down in front of the TV and go nowhere. The Renaissance man strolls along, smelling the flowers, stopping to talk to people he meets on the way, enjoying the scenery. This site is a description of some of my journey. You are welcome to walk along for a time, even if it is just in cyberspace. Find something that interests you at the moment, read and think. If I cause you to ponder, to think about something from a different angle or even just to pause in your busy day and find some way to appreciate being alive, I will feel that this effort will have meaning. The quote. As the Poet T.S. Elliot said;  And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started, and know the place for the first time." They are the most appropriate, powerful and moving words which apply to those of us Jews who searched outside of Judaism to find G-d, only to find out in the end, that Judaism had the answers all the time!   If you are Jewish and are about to or have decided to seek G-d outside of Judaism take a moment and meditate on the words of the poet.  Be honest with yourself. Ask yourself -why you are seeking elsewhere?

    - Principle 12 of Rambam 's 13 Principles of Faith
    The Messianic Idea in Judaism
Belief in the eventual coming of the moshiach is a basic and fundamental part of traditional Judaism. It is part of Rambam 's 13 Principles of Faith , the minimum requirements of Jewish belief . In the Shemoneh Esrei prayer, recited three times daily, we pray for all of the elements of the coming of the moshiach: ingathering of the exiles; restoration of the religious courts of justice; an end of wickedness, sin and heresy; reward to the righteous; rebuilding of Jerusalem; restoration of the line of King David; and restoration of Temple service. Modern scholars suggest that the messianic concept was introduced later in the history of Judaism, during the age of the prophets. They note that the messianic concept is not mentioned anywhere in the Torah (the first five books of the Bible).

Messianic Expectations in 1st Century Judaism
    Documentation From Non-Christian Sources
Last update: 8/6/96 Every now and then I get an email like this one:
or I read a grossly Procrustean description of some 'normative Judaism' of the 1st century like this one : Any Jew with a Pharisaic background (which would have been anyone who was a contemporary of Jesus as well as all Jews today) would have understood that the term "Christ" was a term used in a physical sense to denote one who was claiming a political position. Apart from the seriously mistaken notion that all of Jesus' contemporaries were of Pharisaic background (which seems to be based on James' uncritical use of the fringe-writer Maccoby!), this rather unexciting description of the messianic hope is so out of touch with biblical scholarship of today as to be worthless.
What this nets out to is the popular notion that either:
  • The 1st century Jew HAD NO expectation of a Messiah-figure; or
  • The 1st century Jewish expectation was of a purely natural, human-only, regular political leader.
Both of these positions are COMPLETELY mistaken in the light of the 'HARD' data we have.
