Old Catholic Church
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Old Catholic Church is a religious denomination that split from the Roman Catholic church in 1870. The founders of the movement were mainly Germans who were deeply disturbed by the promulgation of the dogma of Papal Infallibility at the First Vatican Council of 1869-1870. The Church consists of the Union of Utrecht, the Old Catholic Church in Germany, the Polish National Churches, and smaller movements. It is in full communion with the Anglican Communion, as per the Bonn Agreement 1931 . The term 'Old Catholic' is used often by many splinter groups, ranging from 'Continuing' or 'Traditionalist' to 'New Age'. Many of these so-called Old Catholic Churches do not exist in reality, only on the internet. The Old Catholic Church traces its origins through the see of Utrecht in the Netherlands , to the founding of that see c. A.D. 695. However, the see itself did not split from the Roman Catholic Church until the

Old Catholics - New Doctrines
The Roman Catholic Cardinal Archbishop of Utrecht says that the selection of an ex-Roman Catholic priest, Fr. Joris Vercammen, to lead the Old Catholic Union of Utrecht adds an "extra problem" to relations between the two churches, but that the larger difficulty is women's ordination in some Old Catholic bodies. Fr. Vercammen was ordained in the Roman Catholic Church in 1979 and became Old Catholic in 1988. Old Catholics reject papal infallibility and certain other positions upheld by Rome, though Old Catholic Orders have been (until recently) recognised by Rome. The 400,000 member Union of Utrecht is officially in communion with the Canterbury led Anglican Communion, with the exception of the Union's largest body, the Polish National Catholic Church (PNCC) in North America. The PNCC broke communion with the Anglican churches of Canada and America, as well as the Church of England in 1992, over women's ordination, and now is estranged from several European Old Catholic bodies which have moved to ordain women. The PNCC has broken communion with Old Catholic churches in Germany, Austria, Holland and Switzerland over the innovation. The significant percentage of ex-Roman Catholics in leadership of European Old Catholic churches seem, in fact, to have catalysed the movement of these bodies to accept female ordination.

Also called "Christian Catholic", this church unites the men and women who refused to accept the position defined by the Vatican Council I in 1869. The beginnings
Catholic loyalty to the Swiss state was called into question during the second half of the nineteenth century, since the Catholics were opposed to the creation of a federal state in 1848. Catholic ecclesiastic policy and statements made by certain Supreme Pontiffs, who rejected outright the modern notion of the state, only served to aggravate the misunderstanding: in 1864, pope Pius IX published a document listing the 80 propositions or heresies condemned as regards religion, science, politics and economy. A whole host of Catholics refused to venture into this new bellicose tendency of the Roman Church. The proclamation of papal infallibility in 1870 gave them the opportunity they were waiting for to leave the Roman Catholic Church and found a community to their preferences, the Old Catholic Church. The first "association of liberal Catholics" in Switzerland was formed in Olten in 1872. The first parishes were officially recognized as of 1876 in several cantons. Slow depreciation

Are You "Old Catholics"? FAQ:
How are Old Roman Catholics related to the Old Catholics? Answer: We are not. The name "Old Roman Catholic" (three words, not two) is proper to those who recognize the magisterial authority of the Pope and the Holy See in its authentic exercise, while repudiating the "private" innovations of the New Order (Vatican II) church. The adjective "Old Roman" serves to distinguish us from the "New Romans" who have gone over to the errors of modernism and existentialism. Examination of our Creed will show that we are doctrinally traditional Catholics: Credo While we trace our Holy Orders to the diocese of Utrecht in Holland we have consistently disowned the doctrinal deviations of the "Old Catholics" and disassociated ourselves from them. Archbishop Mathew issued a "Declaration of Autonomy" in December of 1910, citing Utrecht's departure from traditional Catholic practices. In 1913, responding in kind, the "Old Catholic" bishops declared that they did not recognize Archbishop Mathew as one of their own. Early 20th Century ORCC History The Twelfth General Council of the Old Roman Catholic Church, held in April 1973 declared unanimously: "This General Council reaffirms that it holds and teaches all that is taught by the Roman Catholic Church on matters of Faith and Morals."

We the undersigned Bishop, on behalf of our clergy and laity of the Catholic Church of England, hereby proclaim and declare the autonomy and independence of our portion of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We are in no way whatever subject to or dependent upon any foreign See, nor do we recognize the right of any members of the religious bodies known as 'Old Catholics' on the Continent, to require submission from us to their authority or jurisdiction, or the decrees, decisions, rules or assemblies, in which we have neither taken part nor expressed agreement. We had supposed and believed that the Faith, once delivered to the Saints, and set forth in the decrees of the Councils accepted as Ecumenical no less in the West than in the East, would have continued unimpaired, whether by augmentation or by diminution, in the venerable Church of the Dutch Nation.

I put away the paradigms of childhood. I began to think like an adult. To think about all sorts of things, even the faith of my childhood. Church The truncated tree model of Church history is sadly representative of curial Catholic-Ultramontane-simplistic thinking. (-Ultramontane-is derived from Latin and means "beyond the mountains"-in this case, the Alps, where Rome lies.) It embodies a monistic-even monolithic-rather than pluralistic approach to defining Catholic identity. The use of the term "pluralistic"here does not imply that there are different definitions of Catholicity. It does imply that there is more than one aspect to Catholicity. It suggests a vibrant identity, a richness of diversity, a variety of gifts. It implies an inherent tension, an evolving dynamic as different perspectives and points of view diverge and intertwine.

Old Catholics Old Catholics, Christian denomination established by German Catholics who separated themselves from the Roman Catholic Church when they rejected (1870) the decrees of the First Vatican Council , especially the dogma of the infallibility of the pope. The Old Catholic movement began publicly with a meeting of professors at Nuremberg (1870) under the leadership of Johann Joseph Ignaz von . By 1874, a new church had been established with a bishop consecrated by a Jansenist bishop (see under Jansen, Cornelis ) of the Church of Utrecht, which had itself separated from Rome in an earlier (1724) schism considered to be a precursor of the Old Catholic movement. Church doctrines were codified by the Declaration of Utrecht (1889), which rejected communion with the pope and many Roman Catholic doctrines and practices; priests were allowed to marry and confession was made optional. Roman ritual was retained but was usually performed in the vernacular. Old Catholicism spread to Switzerland and Austria and then to other nations, arriving in the United States as early as 1885. The Polish National Catholic Church of America, one of the most important early groups, was formed in 1897. Christ Catholic Church, established in 1968, is one of the newest. In 1990, U.S. membership in various Old Catholic churches numbered some 500,000. Other important Old Catholic groups include the
