You notice at the bottom of the ad that the group calls itself "Old Catholic" or "Old Roman Catholic." You are naturally quite puzzled by these terms, but you think that anyone who claims to be "Old" or "Roman" or "Catholic" can't really be too much different from the traditional Catholic priests you know. But, you ask, are they really legitimate Roman Catholics, and can one go to their Masses? The response a traditional Catholic priest is obliged to give to your question is "No, on both counts." But why, you ask, since they say they stand for all that we do? Your priest will respond by saying that they are and always have been considered heretics and schismatics by the Catholic Church, and that they pose a grave danger to your soul if you have anything to do with them. More and more in these times of confusion, a traditional Catholic priest finds himself confronted with such questions from the laity about Old Catholics. He was one of the consecrators of the Right Rev. Hiram Richard Hulse on 12 January 1915 in New York City. Dr. Hulse was the PECUSA Bishop of Cuba from 1915 to 1938. Back to Anglican Independent Communion A very BRIEF PRIMER ON "APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION" We of the Anglican Independent Communion love and serve the Holy Trinity, the Body of Christ, and our neighbours as ourselves, within the spiritual tradition of "the One Catholic and Apostolic Church." A central pillar of this tradition is that the Apostles gave spiritual authority to bishops (overseers) to govern the Church (Acts 20:17) and to confer holy Orders and administer the rite of Confirmation. By the "imposition" of hands, and by the receiving of the Holy Ghost for the Office and Work of a Bishop, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, (and in the Anglican tradition) with the delivery of the Holy Bible, a bishop is consecrated and that "line" is continued. By this manner, Apostolic authority has been passed on down through the One Catholic and Apostolic Church for 2,000 years. St. Augustine, however, articulated the doctrine that the orthodoxy and the validity of the apostolic succession of a bishop were two separate issues. Bishops who were consecrated in direct Apostolic Succession although "heretics" could still exercise their office as stewards of the sacraments in a valid manner. This means, from this perspective they could still "validly" ordain and consecrate priests, bishops and confirm children even if they were not "orthodox" in their own lives and beliefs. This addresses continuity by the physical "laying on of hands", but does it properly consider the function of the Holy Ghost and the Bible in the process? The Orthodox Church has other strong opinions on this point.

This process became necessary because of the divergent development on the issue of the ordination of women in the member churches of the Union of Utrecht. As a consequence the statement of the IBC of 1976, which excludes the possibility of the ordination of women, could not be supported any longer by all member churches. The evaluation of the results brought the Bishops' Conference to realize that some Old Catholic churches deem the ordination of women necessary for the sake of the credibility of their mission, which is why they want to implement the ordination as soon as possible.
