61. Pantheism Explained
Article on pantheism by Paul Harrison at Principia Cybernetica Web.
http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/pantheism.html
Pantheism
Pantheism is the philosophy that everything is God (pan="everything" theos="God") or that the universe and nature are divine Pantheism is distinguished from panentheism, which holds that God is in everything, but also transcends the Universe. Strict pantheism is not a theism. It does not believe in a transcendent or personal God who is the creator of the universe and the judge of humans. Many pantheists feel the word "God" is too loaded with these connotations and never use the word in their own practice - though they may use it to simplify, or to explain things to theists. Pantheism has often been accused of atheism , and not just because it rejects the idea of a personal creator God. Strict or naturalistic pantheism believes that the Universe either originated itself out of nothing, or has existed forever. Modern scientific pantheism is materialistic. It believes that design in the universe can be fully accounted for by principles of evolution and self-organization . It does not believe in separate spirits or survival of the soul after death. Pantheists concerned about personal immortality seek it in realistic ways - through children, deeds, works, and the memories of the living.

Are You a Pantheist?
When you look at the night sky or at the images of the Hubble Space Telescope, are you filled with feelings of awe and wonder at the overwhelming beauty and power of the universe? When you are in the midst of nature, in a forest, by the sea, on a mountain peak do you ever feel a sense of the sacred, like the feeling of being in a vast cathedral? Do you believe that humans are and should be a part of Nature, rather than set above it? If you can answer yes to all of these questions, then you probably have pantheistic leanings. Are you sceptical about a God separate from, and outside, the universe? Yet do you feel an emotional need for religion, for a recognition of something greater than your own self or than the human race? If you answer yes to these additional questions then Pantheism is probably your natural religious home. Pantheism is an ancient religion - older than Buddhism or Christianity. Every religion in the world has given birth to pantheist variants. Pantheism may already count hundreds of millions among its members. Most Taoists are pantheists, along with many Chinese, Japanese and Western Buddhists, deep ecologists, pagans, animists, followers of many native religions, and many Unitarian Universalists. The central philosophical scriptures of Hinduism are pantheistic. Christianity and Islam have strong pantheistic currents.

by Paul Harrison. This commentary is not part of the Credo, but is one interpretation of certain elements of it.
In particular, it deals with those concepts that I feel may be in need of further clarification.
These are my interpretations of those words. Other interpretations are of course possible. Why "scientific" pantheists?
Divinity
Universe
Matter/Energy

Nature
Compassion and value for all life

Why "scientific" pantheists?
Scientific pantheism is called scientific not because it claims to be a science, but because it adopts a scientific approach to reality to complement its religious and aesthetic approach: 1. It accepts the results of science, while being fully aware that science is not static, and that facts and theories change.
2. It respects empirical evidence and is based on evidence rather than faith in improbabilities and impossibilities. 3. It is based on investigation of reality rather than on revelation in ancient books.

Pantheism and Deism
Return to Deism Mainpage From my Guestbook Just wanted to say that Pantheism isn't just thinking nature is god, it's more the believe that the Universe is god. Believing that people would also be god is not a 'request' for pantheism. And I also need to disappoint you with the fact that Pantheism isn't New Age (at least, in your description of New Age) Also, saying that Pantheism is without reason isn't right as well (I am pantheist because of reason) Overall, Pantheism is the definition of people who believe in that the universe is divine, it's therefore more an extension to Deism.

The Netherlands - Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 07:31:33 (PDT) Thanks Atresica. Referring to New Age Religion from http://www.religioustolerance.org/ in their article that listed New Age beliefs: "Pantheism: All that exists is God; God is all that exists. This leads naturally to the concept of the divinity of the individual, that we are all Gods. They do not seek God as revealed in a sacred text or as exists in a remote heaven; they seek God within the self and throughout the entire universe." Pantheism is not an extension of Deism but the polar opposite of Deism. Nobody said a pantheist is without reason but New Age religion is a rejection of reason in favor of "inner feelings" whatever that amounts to. Pantheism goes back to the ancient Greek Stoics and is a forerunner to Deism says Leo Rosten's

Socinianism - A forerunner to Modern Pantheism
by Albert E. Johnson
The Encyclopedia Britannica (Macro Edition) says the word "Pantheism" first appeared in 1705 in a book by a noted Irish Deist, John Toland entitled "Socinianism Gladly Told." Obviously he must have viewed the reference favorably but why? The same source and most dictionaries say the word "Socinian" comes from the work of two Italian theologians in mid-16th Century named Laelius, and nephew Fausus Socinus, who had concluded that the natural world and God were one and the same; that God was not some imaginary authority the Bible suggests who acts upon all human affairs for moral guidance. We can suppose, as present-day pantheists do, that these two members of the Catholic clergy realized that the agency they had been thought to be God is actually the natural world in its entirety for without it nothing else on planet Earth can exist, not even ideas. It is only logical to suspect that any biological organism is not something man could have created, so it must be God who is said in Genesis 1 by whoever wrote that chapter that: "In the beginning God created the Universe" and all that there is on planet Earth. Or would the universe even have existed? Where the Bible becomes confusing is where it anthropomorphizes God as a thinking human being, ignoring altogether that natural creation is an ongoing, developing process of evolution of all species. Awareness of the fallacy of anthropomorphism since the Age of Enlightenment is a cause of great concern among all theologians today.

Description, Justification, Philosophies Satanism index page By Vexen Crabtree 2000 Jan 03 Paul Harrison is the founder and president of the World Pantheist Movement. He lives in Hampstead, London, making it a bit more relevant to this site. This page is here to describe what is my second favorite religion after Satanism; although I toyed with the idea of being a Pantheist I have found that I cannot. This page is a quick description of Pantheism and a comparison to it's beliefs and to that of Satanism. Sources
I was a member of and a small time contributor to the WPM mailing list. My other source of information is a book written by Paul Harrison; " the elements of Pantheism ". It is recommended that you buy and read this book, it is a perfect introduction to Pantheism. What is Pantheism? - bullet points by Paul Harrison
  • Pantheism accepts and affirms life joyously. It does not regard this life as awaiting room or a staging post on the way to a better existence after death.
  • Pantheism has a healthy and positive attitude to sex and life in the body.
  • Pantheism teaches reverence and love for nature. Nature was not created for us to use or abuse - nature created us, we are an inseparable part of her, and we have a duty of care towards her.

    Are You a Pantheist?
by Bernt Rostrom (C) April 02, 2002. Sometimes people ascribe me to still be a pantheist. Isn't this naturalism
still a version of pantheism? Most likely Natural and Scientific Pantheism. this text is mirrored here http://humanists.net/bernt_rostrom/pantheis.htm My personal Naturalism is an interpretation within naturalism and I do see
Natural and Scientific Pantheism as a viable interpretation of naturalism. So that is why its easy to see many similarities. Both are monistic and revering towards
the Universe and see our sacred earth as worthy of our thankful rejoyce and celebration. But while Personal Naturalism relates to Life itself as a personified identity
within us this then is not pantheistic, they see the Universe as impersonal. So to answer questions like "Are You a Pantheist?" I say: No, I am a Personal Naturalist. What is Natural and Scientific Pantheism then?

Graphics by Pantheism Pantheism is often confused with polytheism-the belief in many Gods-but in fact, Pantheism is neither a theism nor an atheism but is a belief that God is everything. When one looks at the root of the word "pantheism," he will see that "pan" means all and "theos" means God, thus the word "pantheism" define the philosophy perfectly. Pantheism is an acient philosophy and has become incorporated in many religions such as Buddhism or Hinduism. However, Pantheism is more popular than most religions because it offers a way for a person to experience religion without commitment. In this context, many self-proclaimed atheists are indeed Pantheists.
The central tenet of Pantheism is rougly the same as that of the Stoicis-the belief that God is not a form, but that he is everything and everyone. Both philosophies proclaim that nature is supreme to all things and that God dwells in every living object; Stoicism and Pantheism agree that God is all and all is God, but despite the similarities, Pantheism is distinct. The chief difference between Pantheism and any other philosophy is that Pantheists do not recognize nor discredit the existence of God. To a Pantheist, God does not surpass validity but instead is innate in it.

Pacifism Pacifism is the absolute rejection of the use of violence on moral grounds. Some pacifists will sanction the use of personal violence in some circumstances, but in general it is absolute. The term was coined by Emile Arnaud at the 10th Universal Peace Conference in 1902. Panamas A derrogitory term denoting corruption and manipulation. The word began use toward the end of the nineteenth century with a French company, the Society for the Building of the Panama Canal. Its financial dealings included the swindling of small investors and the bribing of cabinet ministers, deputies, and judges. After its bankruptcy, American speculators bought up most of the stock. In 1903 the United States, failing to reach an agreement with Colombia, pushed a staged-revolution in Panama. With the new government in power, construction of the Panama Canal started in 1904 and was completed ten years later.
