Rastafarianism Background The founder of the Rastafarians Marcus Garvey, a black movement leader was born in Jamaica in 1887 and the roots of the movement are indeed Jamaican. However, the work was really established around 1920 when Garvey was in America. The beliefs today may not always be the same as in their past but in the 1930's Nigel Scotland tells us in "Sectarian Religion" they taught that; "1. The Black men are reincarnations of the ancient Israelites and were exiled to the West Indies because of their transgressions. 2. Haile Selassie is the living God and the Emperor of the World 3. Ethiopia is Heaven. The Jamaican situation is hopeless Hell. 4. The Black men are superior to the White men, they will soon rule the world. 5. Soon Black men will avenge themselves on the White man.

65. Petersen On Rastafarianism & Culture
rastafarianism AND CULTURE Now, what I offer to you as a contribution of rastafarianismis that we as Pan Africanists wiped out that philosophy altogether.
http://www.viaccess.net/~crucian/culture.htm
RASTAFARIANISM AND CULTURE Dr. Lewis "Akil" Petersen Good afternoon. I'd like to thank Dr. Sprauve and Professor Gene Emmanuel and all the other organizers of the program for inviting me to speak on the topic of Rastafari and Culture. Without a doubt Rastafarian is a culture, meaning that Rastafari represents a totality of Gods and mannerisms. The philosophy and action behind of it. There are many people who would regard Rastafari as otherwise. I am saying: wayward, without objectives. I am saying: wayward without any purpose. Like people just hanging 'round. What I am here to say today is that Rastafari is indeed culture. And what I'd really like to emphasize in my presentation is what I consider to be the contribution to and or influence of Rastafari on our culture. I know we are supposed to be, I think, emphasizing V.I. Culture and I am gonna try my best. But, you see, because Rastafari are found everywhere and our philosophy is common, you will find that our influence and contributions are basically the same. Especially in the Caribbean region. So, I'm going to speak really within that type of context. And I think a brief historical perspective is in order.

-Do you need to be black to be Rasta or is it prefered Rastafarian faith originated in Jamaica and has its roots in Africa. But it doesn't mean that Rasta is only for black people. Rastafari is for all humanity, all people who accept it.
Rasta is goodness and love, how could it be reserved to only some people?
HIM Haile Selassie said that africans will fight "until the color of the skin has no more significance than the colors of the eyes". HIM said also that "until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned...there will be war". So racism has no place in Rastafarian faith.
All humanity, black, white, whatever colors come from Africa. So how could man divide something that Jah has not divided, that Jah made to His own image, with one unique blood?

RASTAFARIANISM
Rastafarianism originated in Jamaica in the 1920s as an expression of faith and cultural pride.
Beliefs
Both Jewish and Christian principles are foundational in Rastafarian thought, though Ethiopia rather than Israel is seen as the Promised Land. They follow the Nazarite vow of separation, which in practice means that:
  • hair is left uncut and unbrushed
(worn in dreadlocks) dietary regulations are observed
(pork and sometimes other meats being forbidden) contact with death is avoided
    (funeral attendance is uncommon)
Often a crown or a tam (ie a woolen hat) in the red, green and gold of the Ethiopian flag is worn. Rastafarian worship is in the form of Nyabinghi, whose style has given rise to Reggae music.

http://www.evangelizeamerica.org/apologetics/Cults/rastafarianism.htm
This religion traces its inception to Marcus Garvey (born in 1887), whose philosophical ideologies were the catalyst that would eventually grow into the Rastafarian movement in 1930. Rastafarianism is often associated with the black impoverished population of Jamaica. It is not just a religion to them but a way of life, a struggle for their rights and freedom. In the early 1920's, Garvey an influential black spokesman was founder of the "back-to-Africa" movement. He spoke of the redemption of the black people through a future black African king . "No race has the last word on culture and on civilization. You do not know what the black man is capable of; you do not know what he is thinking and therefore you do not know what the oppressed and suppressed Negro, by virtue of his condition and circumstance, may give to the world as a surprise."( Speech, June 6, 1928, Royal Albert Hall, London. Quoted in Adolph Edwards, Marcus Garvey Rastas believe that all people of the world are equal, bound together by one god, Jah. They also believe their ancestors offended Jah in some way, which brought them into an exile of slavery in Jamaica. To them blacks are still suppressed through poverty and illiteracy and deceived by the white man's system, which is Babylon.

About this page

Rastafarians worship Haile Selassie I, (know as Ras [Prince] Tafari) former emperor of Ethiopia, considering him to have been the Messiah and the champion of the black race. Although he has physically ''disappeared'', followers still claim to access his presence as Jah. Rastas believe that black people are the Israelites reincarnated and have been persecuted by the white race in divine punishment for their sins. They will eventually be redeemed by exodus to Africa, their true home and heaven on earth. Rastafarian lifestyle emphasises harmony with the world, and may include a vegetarian diet, growing dreadlocks, and the smoking of ganja (marijuana). Rastafarians draw on parts of the Bible as spiritual texts. Source: An A-Z of Religions in the UK , NewsUnlimited
Rastafarians acknowledge that their religion is the blending of the purest forms of both Judaism and Christianity; they also accept the Egyptian origins of both these religions. In affirming the divinity of Haile Selassie, Rastafari rejects the Babylonian hypocrisy of the modern church. The church of Rome, and even the council of Rome, are considered to be particularly Babylonian: was it not from this city that Mussolini invaded the holy land of Ethiopia in 1935? Religions always reflect the social and geographical environment out of which they emerge, and Jamaican Rastafari is no exception: for example, the use of marijuana as a sacrament and aid to meditation is logical in a country where a particularly potent strain of 'herb' grows freely.

[Rastafarianism] Rastafari is obsolete Item Religion News Blog http://www.gospelcom.net/apologeticsindex/rnb/archives/00001623.html Jamaica Observer, Dec. 21, 2002 http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/ MICHAEL A DINGWALL Rastafari , one of the world's newest religions, has been gaining increasing acceptance around the world. Many people see it as a very good alternative to the established religions, especially to Christianity . Black people, especially, see Rastafarianism as their religion, complete with a black god and an African kingdom. Even though the Rasta uses the Christian Bible as its sacred text, it accepts the last Ethiopian Emperor, Selassie, as god. However, does this religion fit into a 21st century world? Is it already outdated? One of the central themes of this religion is the call for us to go back home to Africa. Talk to any Rasta and he will tell you that we must get out of this "Babylon system" and go back to Africa. This call, also associated with Marcus Garvey, had its roots in the view that we black people in the Western Hemisphere are aliens in a strange land. We were taken out of Africa and sent here - to work. This view was correct then. At the time, these nations that we now control were not ours. They belonged mostly to Great Britain, and other European powers. However, times have changed. Britain no longer control these nations. We, the black African people, do. We should no longer cling to an outdated view that we need to go home we are already at home.

A report about Rastafari in Jamaica

LET IT GROW, LET IT FLOW
In 1935 the men with the thick hair cords
emerged for the first time in Jamaica. Their appearance intimidated some islanders so intensively, that they invented for the matted braids an insult word: "Dreadlocks" - fright curl.
Whose owners named themselves "Rasta-fari"; after their Messias, the ethiopian Ras Ta Fari, who has crowned himself five years ago as Haile Selassie for emperor. In 1935 the "lion of Juda" had been chased away out of the country by Italian troops - and the followers of Haile Selassie in Africa even in Jamaica praised to let its hair grow until the emperor would sit again on the throne. They followed a commandment of the fourth book of Moses, that prescribed to let freely grow the hair during a vow.
In 1941 Haile Selassie returned on its throne. But in that time the manes had already got an independent meaning in Jamaica. They symbolized the pride of the Rastas on their African descent. Finally those curls remembered the traditional hair dress of the ethiopian Oromo-people, but also the head plaster of the Asante-priests in Ghana and the Baye-case-sect in Senegal.
With the triumphant advance of the Reggae-music Rasta-curls became worldwide popular in the middle of the seventieth. Under the blacks of the Caribbean, Africa and the United States a kind of hair-renaissance began. Skillful woven braids and hair snails again were discovered. Before many blacks had tried to adapt the appearance of the whites; with hot pairs of pliers they had extracted their curls or they tried to restrain the ruffle with creams.

I looked into it out of lack of knowledge, expecting some sort of interestingly mythical, enlightened (but not near perfect) belief structure, like your Hinduisms or your Buhais. But no. Just black power mixed with Christianity and king-worship, softened over time. Oh, Bob Marley, how could you be into this crap?
