Balanone's Temple of Set Information
Theme: Information (and discussion) about the Temple of Set , Setian Philosophy, and related topics
The Temple of Set has mostly tried to maintain a low profile since its beginning in 1975. Partly because of this low profile, partly because of its ties with modern Satanism, partly because of the freedom and individuality of its members, partly because of the background of its founding members, and partly for other reasons, the Temple of Set has also had a controversial reputation. The purpose of this web site is to provide basic information about the Temple of Set in an honest and mostly objective manner.

Balanone:
Balanone has been an active member of the Temple of Set since early 1976, and so is intimately familiar with Setian philosophy and practice. While this web site is just one person's statement, and not an official statement from/by the organization, this person has the depth of experience to be reasonably confident in his accuracy. Corrections, additions, and differences of opinion from other members of the Temple of Set are more than welcome, and within reason all such will be included in this site. I also welcome corrections, additions, and suggestions from others as well.
The Temple of Set
The Temple of Set is probably best described as an initiatory magical order of the Left Hand Path, a description which probably doesn't mean much to those without occult backgrounds.

. . . In his role as tormentor of the wicked, Set appears in various guises in the Duat (Egyptian Underworld). He is the heart-eating dragon SetNakt (Set is Mighty). SetNakt eats the heart (intellect) of the evil individual. He is the figure of Set the Watcher, who observes the progress of the Boat of Re. This role is one of the observer of the Real, a role that he also fills in slaying the demon Apep. Nightly, the Boat of Re is challenged by the non-created serpent Apep. Apep has the power to hypnotize the other inhabitants of the boat. The other gods fall into a trance, the Boat stops, and Set descends to fight the demon. He kills Apep . . . Set is a destroyer of delusional thinking. He destroys that which has failed to Become real. As such he is a tester of the dead - a god of Limits. In short, Set works in the subconscious as a destroyer of delusion.

I can't answer this in 25 words or less, so bear with me! If you consider Satanism to be anti-Christian Devil worship, the answer is no. The Temple of Set practices a completely non-Christianized, positive "high Satanism". To understand what we mean by this, a bit of history of the Temple is needed: While the TOS as an organization was formally incorporated and recognized by both state and federal governments in 1975 CE, its magical and philosophical roots are prehistoric, originating in mankind's first apprehension that there is "something different" about the human race - a sense of SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS - that places humanity apart from all other known forms of life. Ancient religions - of which those of Egypt are generally acknowledged the eldest - either exalted or feared this self-consciousness. Those which exalted it took the position that the human psyche is capable of opposition to and domination of the forces of nature. The psyche-worshipping, reasoning religions - or schools of initiatory philosophy - attained levels of abstract knowledge that made them mysterious to the masses. In a few societies, such as Egypt and Greece, such groups were respected and admired. More often, however, their exclusive elitism and "supernatural" activities made them objects of resentment and persecution.

PRETENDERS TO THE THRONE: REGARDING THE TEMPLE OF SET by Magister Peter H. Gilmore, Order of the Trapezoid, Church of Satan Throughout the thirty-three years of its existence, the Church of Satan has continued to expand while its character has undergone a number of carefully-planned developmental phases. In the process, we have at times found it necessary to eject individuals who have acted in ways that were not in keeping with our high standards for social behavior. We have also had a small number of individuals freely depart from us, finding our means too challenging to their false images of personal superiority. Neither types are ever missed, as the true elite of talented, highly-motivated, productive, creative, and above all independent individuals still find their way to us. They work to move the world, using Satanism as the fulcrum for their efforts. There have been those who would attempt to imitate us, but they usually discover that our shoes are far too big to fill. Short-lived spinoffs have included The Church of Satanic Brotherhood, Ordo Templi Satanas, Order of the Black Ram, Church of Lucifer, Thee Orthodox Satanic Church and so on. None of these has prospered or even affected the course of Satanism, as they have quickly collapsed due to the lack of energy or direction. Since the death of our High Priest and Founder, even more imitators have emerged, trying to make their way to the center ring. These sorry clowns are banished by their own lack of competence to the side rings, quickly passed over as the discerning look towards us for the genuine star performers. See our

    I. Group Profile
  • Name: Temple of Set
  • Founder: Michael A. Aquino
  • Date of Birth:
  • Birth Place: San Francisco, Ca
  • Year Founded:
  • Brief History: The Temple of Set developed as a schism from the Church of Satan founded by Anton LaVey. Michael A. Aquino, a former member of the Church of Satan, left the organized religion claiming that LaVey was exploiting the religion for personal gain. Aquino and a group of his followers, The Council of Nine, left the Church of Satan in order to keep the religion "pure". Similar to LaVey, Aquino wrote a book, The Book Coming Forth by Night , and it was around the specific teachings of this book that he based the belief system of his new sectarian movement. The Temple was incorporated in California as a non-profit church in 1975, receiving both state and federal recognition.
  • Sacred Texts: The Book Coming Forth by Night, The Crystal Tablet of Set, The Jeweled Tablets of Set, The Scroll of Set.
  • Cult or Sect: The goals of the Religious Movements Homepage are to (1) provide resources for objective understanding, (2) encourage appreciation of religious diversity, and (3) promote religious tolerance. The opportunity to pursue these goals is diminished when the language employed in public discourse silently carries highly negative presuppositions.

Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know! The Temple of Set is home to some seriously deranged vampires known simply as Setites . Setites are capable of summoning Vipers , draining your vitae, and putting your party members in awe, and will also be wielding machetes, guns, rifles, and incinerators. It sounds a lot more difficult than it really is. With both Pink and Lily in your party, you shouldn't have too much trouble with any of them. However, if you haven't installed the latest patch yet, I recommend doing so now, as being able to save at any time will come in handy due to the fact that you cannot use Walk the Abyss whatsoever within the temple. As you charge through the temple, you'll realize that several areas will initially be inaccessible. If you reach a door that you cannot open, it will most likely require you to flip a switch in another room before it will open. Press on through each room, taking out every Setite you meet. If any of your party members get Awed, switch to an alternate member until the Awe wears off. Your only real worry is getting overpowered by the Setites, should you anger more than 2-3 at a time.
