Due to the reported harmful effects suffered by some people who have practiced TM, the TM-Sidhi Program, and related TM practices, this site is provided as a Public Warning Service. The TM Organization has historically refused to address adverse effects arising from the practices they promote. In spite of evidence to the contrary, they still assert that their practices do not have adverse effects. Negative consequences resulting from Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi practices are described by Mahesh's TM Organization as "unstressing" or "stress release" and are therefore considered by them to be "beneficial results." The scientific research and statistics that are reported here also directly contradict the TM Organization-sponsored research and statistics, with regard to a number of their claims of "unique" and "proven" benefits, such as paranormal effects. Stress Management and Stress Prevention
Stress management, stress reduction and stress prevention are all necessary in today's high pressure corporate environment. The effects of stress in the workplace are devastating, both physically and financially. According to the National Institutes of Health, 80-90% of all illnesses are caused by stress, either directly or indirectly. Clearly, something more than stress balls, stress tabs, morale boosters and even health clubs is needed. In this study described below, the Transcendental Meditation technique was found to be more than twice as effective at reducing stress than any other form of relaxation or stress reduction.

Reduced Stress and Anxiety
A statistical meta-analysis conducted at Stanford University of all available studies-146 independent outcomes-indicated that the effect of the Transcendental Meditation program on reducing anxiety as a character trait was much greater than that of all other meditation and relaxation techniques, including muscle relaxation. This analysis also showed that the positive Transcendental Meditation result could not be attributed to subject expectation, experimenter bias, or quality of research design.

A study of health insurance statistics on over 2,000 people practicing the Transcendental Meditation program over a 5-year period found that the Transcendental Meditation meditators consistently had more than 50% fewer doctor visits than did other groups with comparable age, gender, profession, and insurance terms. The difference between the Transcendental Meditation and non-Transcendental Meditation groups increased in older-age brackets. TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION and TM-SIDHI
Programs Over 500 studies have been completed on the physiological, psychological, and sociological effects of the Maharishi Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs, making it perhaps the most intensively studied technology in the field of human development. These studies have been conducted at 210 different universities and research institutions in 27 countries, and articles have now appeared in more than 100 scientific journals. These studies have been gathered in Scientific Research on the Maharishi Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs, Volumes 1-6, containing over 4,000 pages of scientific papers and appear below in the Bibliography of 508 TM program studies. Listed below are some of the findings on this technology relevant to education: Improved Mental Abilities: Increased intelligence, increased creativity, improved learning ability, improved memory, improved reaction time, higher levels of moral reasoning, improved academic achievement, greater orderliness of brain functioning, increased self-actualization. by John Koenig Cht. It was 1978. Saturday Night Fever was still playing at the Park Cinema. Disco was king. Jimmy Carter was President. And researchers were meditating on Rhode Island as a possible model for an ideal society. It was part of a study on the effects of Transcendental Meditation on society. The theory was (and still is) that when enough people practice Transcendental Meditation in a community, their enlightenment will have a positive effect on the quality of life affecting the community as a whole. It is kind of like the harmonic convergence only with a specific meditation tool. And, they picked Rhode Island as their model test community. The Transcendental Meditation (known affectionately as TM) is a method of stress relief and consciousness expansion introduced to the western world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1960s. The Beatles, Donovan, The Beach Boys, Mia Farrell and other celebrities became followers of the Maharishi travelling to India to spend time at his Ashram. They brought back a way of experiencing altered mental states without drugs. It took off in the United States and Europe at nothing short of the speed of thought. Millions of impressionable baby boomers (your humble author included) were initiated in Transcendental Meditation and became "TMers".
