This is a list of some of the schools, departments and institutes in the US offering multidisciplinary programs in cognitive science and closely related fields. Typically, they include the areas of cognitive psychology, computational and cognitive Neuroscience, artificial intelligence, linguistics, and philosophy. Some schools have a separate department which accepts students on its own; others have some type of cognitive science program in which students are admitted through a participating "home" department. Most of the included schools offer a separate or joint degree in Cognitive Science. Compositionality
Compositionality is a feature of language in virtue of which the meaning of a sentence is a function of the meanings of its constituent parts. For example, the meaning of the sentence 'John thought the dog fetched the stick' is a function of the meanings of the component phrases 'the dog fetched the stick' and 'John thought,' whose meanings are in turn a function of their parts.
Compositionality is related to the semantic theory of truth, developed by Alfred Tarski (1902-83), which maintains that a sentence's truth is a function of the satisfaction conditions of its parts. A satisfaction condition of, for example, the predicate 'is greater than seven' is any number which is greater than seven. Back to index.

Because of its strong traditions in science and technology and a commitment to cross-disciplinary research, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) has much to offer students interested in cognitive science. At UIUC, graduate training in cognitive science is characterized by a firm grounding in a single discipline of the student's choosing, a specific focus on an interdisciplinary area (learning and conceptual organization, computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, or cognitive neuroscience), and student involvement in research, including research at the university's new Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. Each student interested in cognitive science is admitted to a specific department and must fulfill the requirements of that department to obtain his or her Ph.D. Most of these students are affiliated with computer science, linguistics, or psychology. Others affiliate with anthropology, educational psychology, the neurosciences, or philosophy. Thus, at UIUC, one studies cognitive science from the perspective of, say, a linguist, or a psychologist, or a researcher in artificial intelligence. This gives each student the kind of background in an established discipline necessary to engage in original research at the doctoral level. At the same time, however, the many courses with interdisciplinary themes and specific interdisciplinary research groups at the Beckman Institute allow students to step outside of their "home" departments.

The study of intelligence in the modern cognitive sciences has largely become the study of representations (visual, linguistic, etc.) conceived computationally. This interdisciplinary science has, of course, several major aspects, and these at once illuminate each other and exist in a certain tension as they compete for the explanation of common, and related, phenomena. This view is the basis for the interdisciplinary work of IRCS over the past decade. The philosophy governing research at IRCS has been to look for progress at these disciplinary boundaries, where the need for integration and the uncertainty about how to achieve it stimulate scientific creativity. Since its inception, IRCS has seen considerable growth in both the number of researchers working at the Institute and the types of projects undertaken. IRCS currently has over 50 affiliated faculty from eight departments in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. IRCS's programs directly impact such technologies as graphics and animation, robotics and computer vision, spoken and written natural language interfaces, machine translation, information extraction systems, software development, and bioinformatics. Research at IRCS is structured under three inter-related scientific foci:

    A Mercifully Brief Biography
    Andy Clark is Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Philosophy/Neuroscience/Psychology program at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Educated at the University of Stirling, Scotland, Clark pursued undergraduate studies in Philosophy and took a Ph.D. addressing issues in Philosophy and Evolutionary Biology. He taught briefly at the University of Glasgow, Scotland before accepting a "New Blood" appointment at the University of Sussex, England in 1985 where he later became Reader and then Professor in Philosophy and Cognitive Sciences. He is the author of three books Microcognition (MIT Press/Bradford Books 1989)
