Darkroom Fans and Louvers:
With all of the toxic chemicals and fumes which are released during film processing, the need for adequate ventilation in darkroom work areas cannot be over emphasized. Improperly ventilated space can be harmful to the health of workers. Now available is our "Air-No-Lite" 100% light tight darkroom exhaust fans and louvers which insure healthy ventilation continuously. Each fan is one piece molded body and five sections molded louver. Different sizes of fresh air supply louvers are available. Each size is designed to supply just the right amount of air to a particular model exhaust fan. (Exhaust fans work best in a darkroom that is equipped with fresh air supply louvers or some other kind of air supply. If there is no air supply to the darkroom, the fan will be working against a vacuum and can do nothing) Electrical: 110 V AC, 60 Hz. 3-wire grounded cord.

Live and Interactive Electron Microscopy on the Internet for Students using
CyberSTEM
Electron Microscopy has a visual appeal which can be readily capitalised upon to increase the interest of students at the primary and secondary level in science and tertiary education in general. To some extent this has been handled by school visits to centres and university departments. However, the scope of interaction is limited to schools within the immediate vicinity of the university or to those who are able and prepared to travel from more remote locations. These visits, by their nature, only provide a glimpse of what the University is able to offer. The advent of Internet connections within Australian schools under the OpenNet scheme funded by the Federal government has opened the possibility for interactions at a different level. In particular, the broadcast of live sessions over the Internet to either a single school or a group of schools becomes technically feasible. This has the advantage that students at more remote sites are able to participate and benefit from exposure to a more diverse range of applications of technology and areas of scientific endeavour. Electron microscopy is particularly beneficial in this role given its penetration into so many areas and scientific disciplines.

Interactive Java Tutorials
Virtual Scanning Electron Microscopy
We have teamed up with award-winning electron microscopist Dr. Dennis Kunkel to produce a series of interactive Java tutorials that explore various aspects of virtual Scanning Electron Microscopy (vSEM). Use the tutorial below to discover how specimens appear when magnified in the virtual SEM. Interactive Java Tutorial ATTENTION
When the tutorial is first loaded, the specimen is out of focus and brightness and contrast are not optimized. Use the Focus slider to achieve focus and the Contrast and Brightness sliders to optimize specimen appearance. Next, use the Magnification slider to slowly increase the magnification. Higher magnification images load in the background, so please be patient and allow some time for these images to download into your browser cache. Use the pull-down menu bar to change specimens. Each time a new specimen is loaded into the browser, the focus, brightness, and contrast controls are randomly reset to simulate the situation in a real microscope. http://www.siu.edu/departments/shops/cem.html
Center for Electron Microscopy
The Center for Electron Microscopy (CEM) at Southern Illinois University is a service unit supported by the Office of Research Development and Administration (ORDA). The CEM provides service and training in electron and light microscopy. This is accomplished by means of graduate level courses in scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as training in the use of all instrumentation in the CEM. Trained staff will prepare specimens and assist in the viewing of samples and assist in the writing of technical or budgetary proposals related to electron microscopy and the writing of reports for granting agencies. CEM sponsors workshops on modern research methods in electron microscopy and offers tours of the facility to the university and community. The internal rates are designed to recover all costs associated with expendible supplies, service contracts on major instrumentation and a portion of the salaries of technical personnel. The CEM is available for outside grant and contract work. Outside rates are negotiated through the Office of Research Development and Administration and are designed to recover all operating expenses as well as an established overhead rate. Major equipment consists of a state-of-the-art analytical system composed of a Hitachi 7100 TEM equipped for x-ray analysis (NORAN Voyager III) and digital, high resolution imaging at 125 kV. The TEM is connected to a variable pressure SEM also with x-ray analysis capability. This permits researchers to observe non-conductive specimens under more natural conditions than the conventional SEM and TEM (also available). The EM system is networked with various light microscopes and macroscopes capable of capturing low light level images for further analysis. Preparatory equipment includes: ultramicrotomes, vacuum evaporators, critical point and freeze dryers, sputter coater, specimen trimmers, darkroom set-ups, copy stands, and miscellaneous small lab equipment.
