Focus
The Geochemistry Department's applied and basic research or support activities are directed at a broad range of topics, including: standard geochemical characterization of rocks and fluids, natural weathering reactions, ion exchange mechanisms, mineral surface titrations, sorption and desorption kinetics, transport and attenuation processes for toxic metal and radionuclide species, computer modeling of reactive fluid flow in fractured and porous media, theoretical modeling of bulk and interfacial mineral-fluid processes using ab initio and empirical techniques, and development of waste site remediation techniques. The Geochemistry Department supports a variety of analytical, experimental, and theoretical projects, including:
  • Lattice Gas Automata and Lattice Boltmann computational modeling of mesoscale fluid flow and reaction in fractured and porous media.
  • In-situ waste remediation and attenuations studies, focusing on sorption and ion exchange mechanisms with common soil and rock surfaces.
  • Empirical and ab initio modeling of complex mineral structures and mineral-solution interfaces, emphasizing sorption processes.

ISOTOPE GEOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY OVERVIEW The Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory (IGL) is part of the Geochemistry Laboratories of the Department of Geology. The IGL comprises a set of laboratories for the preparation and isotopic analysis of a wide range of geological and biological materials. These laboratories include separate Mass Spectrometry (2), Chemistry (2), Mineral Separation and Rock Preparation facilities. The IGL began operations in 1991 with the acquisition of a NBS-design single-collector solid source mass spectrometer. In 1992, a Sector 54 mass spectrometer with 7 faraday collectors, was added to the complement of analytical tools. A second mass spectrometry laboratory, shared with the Plasma Laboratory houses a Nu Plasma multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, added in 2001. The mission of the IGL is to produce the highest quality isotope data, to teach students and visitors the techniques involved in gathering such data, and to maintain itself as a world-class isotope measurement facility. FACILITIES The Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry Laboratory of the IGL currently houses two solid source mass spectrometers, filament degassing apparatus, DOS-based microcomputers, and laminar flow benches for sample loading. Both mass spectrometers have dedicated positive and negative ion collimators.

Hydrothermal Vent Geochemistry Hydrothermal circulation occurs when seawater penetrates into the ocean crust, becomes heated, reacts with the crustal rock, and rises to the seafloor. Seafloor hydrothermal systems have a major local impact on the chemistry of the ocean that can be measured in hydrothermal plumes. Some hydrothermal tracers (especially helium) can be mapped thousands of kilometers from their hydrothermal sources, and can be used to understand deep ocean circulation. Because hydrothermal circulaton removes some compounds from seawater (e.g. Mg, SO4) and adds many others (He, Mn, Fe, H2, CO2), it is an important process in governing the composition of seawater.

ICP-OES Instrument Laboratory
This laboratory houses a Varian "Liberty 200" sequential ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer) which is used for the analysis of rocks, minerals and fluids. Specifications: Czerny-Turner monochromator (0.75m); vacuum operation for emission lines in the U.V.; resolution 0.006 -0.018 nm; high grating order efficiencies on 1st to 4th order lines; concentric glass nebulizer and quartz torch; The ICP is computer controlled, the software includes: analytical program setup, quality con trol and report writing. The computer is connected to the Departmental LAN for data transfer. The system also includes a Varian SPS-5 autosampler with sequence control from the Liberty 200 (including automatic smart rinse and dilution). Detection limits for most elements are in the ppm - ppb range.

My research interests involve the integration of low temperature geochemistry and mineralogy in the study of crystal surfaces and water-rock interactions found in natural systems. In particular, I am interested in environmentally significant processes such as crystal growth, metal sorption, trace element partitioning and other surface mediated reactions. My research also addresses the structural response of minerals to substituent elements, especially lanthanides and actinides in apatite group minerals. Current research projects include: The role of crystal surface structure on trace element incorporation during growth; geochemical implications and dating of compositional zoning in minerals; crystal chemistry of the lanthanides and actinides in apatite; crystal growth and trace element incorporation in fluorite and apatite; understanding fundamental interactions between aqueous metal species and soil minerals; structural transformations in clay minerals. Potassium - Argon Geochronology Noble Gas Geochemistry Staff and Students Recent Publications Introduction Both the K-Ar and Ar- Ar dating techniques, when applied to appropriate minerals, yield precise and accurate ages of emplacement and crystallization for rapidly cooled rocks, with analytical errors generally less than one percent. For slowly cooled rocks, these methods provide information as to the time since cooling below the closure temperature for argon retention in the particular mineral being analyzed. We apply these dating methods to suitable rocks and minerals in order to provide a numerical time framework for the evolution of particular areas of interest, and in the derivation of time scales for a range of geological processes. A key factor in choosing research directions is whether the science addresses broader issues of Earth history or how the Earth works. Current Research Interest Stratigraphic geochronology: Precise and accurate dating by the K-Ar and Ar- Ar methods of the products of volcanism in stratigraphic sequences in East Africa is providing a time framework for the history of continental rifting, and for the evolution of vertebrates over the last 20 Ma, with special emphasis on hominids and hominoids. This is a continuing project with the National Museums of Kenya and associated workers (McDougall, 1988; 1990; 1996; Feibel et al., 1989; Boschetto et al., 1992; Brown and McDougall, 1993). Development of laser microprobe systems has revolutionized this kind of work; our argon-ion continuous wave laser and associated facilities, including the VG3600 mass spectrometer, have been successfully used for these purposes since commissioning several years ago. Thus, an excellent recent example of the power of this approach was the successful dating of a sequence at Kanapoi, Turkana, Northern Kenya (Leakey et al., 1995), where it was shown that fossils of a new species of hominid

The Australian Organic Geochemists present Bi-annual Australian Organic Geochemistry Conference
12 - 14 July 2000. Townsville, Queensland, Australia Two Australian teams have made big splashes in Science and Nature last year. I have engaged both to present their ground breaking work in two keynote lectures: Jochen Brocks et al (ANU/AGSO) not only showed that the whole Hamersley Iron deposit was set down by Archea but they used the molecular marker approach to push the origin of life on Earth back another billion years. Jeri Dickens et al (JCU) have put together the story which shows the massive carbon input during the latest Paleocene thermal maximum was gas hydrates liberated from continental margin sediments. His "Blast from the Past" makes a convincing argument for including these in the Global Carbon Cycle. Geotech P/L from Perth offers a prize for the best student presentation, oral or poster.
