Overview
The Geochemistry program at the NHMFL was established in 1994 with the hiring of Alan Zindler and Vincent Salters and the move of several of the faculty ( Roy Odom and Paul Ragland (retired)) from the FSU Geological Sciences Department to the NHMFL. The program currently has four faculty members (Odom, Salters, Wang and Zindler), an engineer ( Ted Zateslo ), a chemist ( Afi Sachi-Kocher ), a postdoc ( Michael Bizimis ), and approximately ten graduate students. Research in the Geochemistry program is centered around the use of trace elements and isotopes to understand the Earth processes and environment. The research interests range from the chemical evolution of Earth to local scale problems on the sources and transport of environmentally significant substances. In addition to terrestrial research, current activities also focus on oceanographic topics, which have relations to the RIDGE and ODP programs.

SAD NEWS
It is with great sadness and indeed shock, that we record the untimely and sudden death of our respected friend and colleague, Dr Peter Donkin. Peter was a dedicated, knowledgeable and above all, principled, scientist with whom some of us in PEGG worked for 17 years. He was a font of knowledge regarding matters toxicological and on moving from Plymouth Marine Laboratory three years ago, brought a wealth of experience to PEGG and to the University generally. Peter co-supervised the Ph.D. studies of Kevin Thomas, Emma Wraige and Emma Smith and published numerous scientific articles with PEGG. He will be irreplaceable.

Chemie der Erde, one of the oldest journals for geochemistry-related topics, promotes broad interdisciplinary discussion on chemical problems in the geosciences, geoecology and environmental sciences. Numerous contributions by young authors have allowed the journal to retain its „young" scientific profile. Publications addressing interdisciplinary questions are particularly encouraged. The journal, through very personalized consultation and its worldwide distribution, offers entry into the world of international scientific communication. The international journal „Chemie der Erde" publishes original papers, brief news items and surveys of selected topics.
