The GPS satellite (Block IIF) image is borrowed from the USAF and the laser system image is from SGAPO (Space Geodesy and Altimetry Projects Office). The HartRAO 26 m antenna is shown illuminated by floodlights. Welcome to the home page of the Space Geodesy Programme of the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) located North of Johannesburg in South Africa. The Space Geodesy Programme participates in global networks which uses applications of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and the Global Positioning System (GPS) to do research in geodesy. HartRAO is an IGS Regional Data Center ) can be downloaded from here. HartRAO operates an SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging) system (MOBLAS-6) in collaboration with GSFC, Washington. Having three main space geodesy techniques located on the same site positions HartRAO to play an important role in international space geodesy networks. This collocation makes HartRAO a true fiducial site. HartRAO has installed 5 International GPS Service (IGS) GPS stations.

The Space Geodesy Branch, as a part of the Laboratory for Terrestrial Physics (LTP) located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), conducts broad scientific research in the gravitational field and angular momentum of the Earth's atmosphere-hydrosphere-solid Earth-core system, and related global properties and dynamic interactions among all Earth system components. The Branch also conducts similar studies for terrestrial planets and satellites in our Solar System. Geodetic source data are derived from space geodetic techniques combined with unique computational and modeling capabilities, including Precise Orbit Determination (POD) and Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) software. Our staff consists of ten civil-servant scientists, several University/Joint Center faculties and grantees, about 20 on-site and a number of off-site contractors, and we host various visitors. We maintain and welcome collaborative work with researchers from other NASA laboratories and other agencies, as well as domestic and international Earth Sciences institutions. Rick Kohrs (rickk@ssec.wisc.edu) colored the image as follows. He used a threshold temperature to determine which pixels in the image corresponded to clouds. He then removed the cloud pixels from consideration. Since the temperatures over land and sea overlap, he used a base map to separate the remaining pixels into sea and land groups. At this point he had three partial images: (a) clouds, (b) unclouded sea, and (c) unclouded land. Based on temperatures he colored each of these separately using an appropriate fraction of the total number of cells available in an 8-bit color map. The combined image you see here uses the whole set of 256 colors.

GEODESY is a comprehensive and integrated application of remote sensing and geographic information systems for K-12 schools. Its objective is to enhance the relationship between computer literacy and geographic awareness, allowing students to widen their vision of the Earth's inter-related systems through the use of digital geographic data. Students and teachers using GEODESY learn to interpret and analyze geographic information about their local community. The program is embedded within a graphical-user interface that organizes and presents geographic tools and data within the construct of the National Geography for Life Standards. Students will be empowered to answer relevant questions about WHERE they are, WHY they are there, and HOW they can enhance the quality of life of their community, and ultimately, in our world. To learn more about the GEODESY application, and to navigate around this web page, use the buttons at the bottom of the page to go to previous pages, or to find out more about a particular subject.

Some people do not know what geodesy is.. this page is trying to describe it. Showit so simply, give some symbiotic to other sciences. geodesy. What is geodesy?

Geodesy What is Geodesy? Geodesy is the discipline that deals with the measurement and representation of the earth and other celestial bodies and their respective gravity fields, in a three-dimensional time varying space. What is Geomatics? Geomatics is the modern scientific term referring to the integrated approach of measurement, storage and display of the descriptions and location of earth-based data, often termed spatial data. These data come from many sources, including earth orbiting satellites, air and sea-borne sensors and ground based instruments. It is processed and manipulated with state of the art information technology using computer software and hardware. It has applications in all disciplines which depend on spatial data, including navigation, geology and geophysics, mining, civil engineering, oceanography, land development and land ownership and tourism. It is fundamental to all the geoscience disciplines which use spatially related data. What is concerned with? Everyday the results of the work of Geomatics Engineers are found around us, from the legal security of your property boundaries, the appropriate location of mobile telephone transmitters, the safe navigation of ships, to the protection of environmental resources. When the questions -what is it, where is it, and how much is there- are asked, the geomatics engineer provides the answer. All decisions that are made by planners, engineers and decision makers regarding the earth, its environment and resources, initially require studies and analyses of models of the earth in the form of maps, plans, earth images and digital information. Geomatics is therefore an activity based on
