    http://www.usgs.gov/research/gis/title.html
    Geographic Information Systems
    Geographic information systems (GIS) technology can be used for scientific investigations, resource management, and development planning. For example, a GIS might allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times in the event of a natural disaster, or a GIS might be used to find wetlands that need protection from pollution.
    What is a GIS?
    In the strictest sense, a GIS is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information, i.e. data identified according to their locations. Practitioners also regard the total GIS as including operating personnel and the data that go into the system.

In Maine, state government is accelerating these activities by fully implementing a statewide geographic information system (GIS) coordinated by the Office of GIS (MEGIS). MEGIS coordinates GIS activities and provides services to encourage and guide the development of GIS in Maine to serve both public and private sector applications. MEGIS is responsible for providing services which ensure the quality of and access to these data. To this end, MEGIS manages the State's GIS database to maximize data sharing and compatibility between local, state and national programs, develops GIS standards and guidelines, provides quality control services, and maintains public "one-stop shopping" for digital geographic data. The application of GIS to the study of the development of the Roman settlement pattern in Spain
    Federica Massagrande
    fede@monza.demon.co.uk
    Introduction
    This research project applies GIS (Geographic Information Systems) techniques to non-complete data from non-systematic field surveys to study the distribution of Roman sites in different areas of Spain and to compare the development of the archaeological settlement patterns in the different regions. The research was started in 1991 with two main objectives: 1. To investigate to what extent GIS could be used to perform landscape analysis of archaeological settlement and in what way computer techniques could help to improve on the overall quality of non-systematically collected archaeological data. 2. To investigate the development of Roman settlement patterns in Spain and try to relate the observed variation to social, political and economic transformations of the Roman society.
    The study areas
    Three study areas were selected in Spain for the purposes of the research. These regions were chosen according to four criteria, which are outlined below:
    • that the non-systematic survey had been carried out for enough seasons to cover a large enough region;
