GIS Software, Mapping Software and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Primer
The manifold.net website uses frames for fast and easy navigation using modern browsers. If you have an ancient browser... time to upgrade! If your browser does not work with frames, here are some notes on Geographic Information Systems in straight text format if you have teleported into this site and wish to know more before upgrading your browser. If you have a modern browser, jump right into the site and skip this tiny text. There are thousands of pages to explore in this site. GIS software is simply mapping software. A "GIS" is a mapping software program, most likely run in Windows in modern times. GIS technology can be used for scientific investigations, resource management, and development planning. For example, a Windows GIS might allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times in the event of a natural disaster, or a GIS might be used to find wetlands that need protection from pollution. GIS and mapping software play a central role in the geographic decision making of cities, government, universities, military, environmental studies, and numerous institutions world wide. Software for GIS, especially high value or free software for GIS is of special importance.

The Albany Business Review asked MapInfo about the use of its software in the war. Brian Lantz, head of the company's homeland security efforts declined but noted, "We do have international applications and the Department of Defense is a very large customer of ours." The article also notes the U.S. Air Force as a customer. There is concern that satellite phone users may become targets in the war with Iraq. While the military won't say how well the handsets can be located, it notes that targets are usually far bigger than an individual with a phone. Some satellite carriers have GPS receivers in the handsets, while others claim that with just a signal location error is about the area of Arizona. An

GEOARCHAEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS This interdisciplinary site is intended to be an introduction to the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in combination with geoarchaeological technique and methodology to help solve archaeological problems. The slide show is a guided tour of a short, conceptual practicum meant to illustrate the concepts and methodology of of traditional archaeological predictive model and compares it with one that incorporates geoarchaeology using simple, simulated data. Further detail can be found in the thesis proposal, where a more intensive and complete project proposal is presented where real-world data will be used. 71. Open Source GIS
Index of open source tools for Webgis, CAD, and remote sensing.
http://opensourcegis.org/
The Future of GIS OpenSourceGIS.org Open Source GIS [Last update: 3/1/03] This effort represents an attempt to build a complete index of Open Source / Free GIS related software projects. The effort has a long way to go, especially for projects in languages other than English. The definition of GIS has been kept loose to encompass a broad range of projects which deal with spatial data. If you know of other sites that should be listed please tell me about them. More importantly if I have made any errors in characterizing a project, let me know: blewis@atsincorp.com This effort stands on the sturdy shoulders of other projects, most notably OSRS FreeGIS.org Metalab Linux Archive , and Fresh Meat.net Descriptive text gathered from the project site is in quotes. Almost all of these projects fit the definition of Open Source Software as defined by the Open Source Initiative , and most of them fit the stricter definition of Free Software as defined by the Free Software Foundation ArcView APR Parser "Work with ArcView leads to large directories with numerous files consisting of many projects and tables and views, etc. Due to the complexity of the directories, it is impossible to see all the links between these tables, themes. A database containing all of the relevant information would help in locating data and reduce the searching time." [ License: GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) ArgoUML "The goal of the ArgoUML project is to build an object oriented design tool that is: 1) A joy to use (we really mean it). 2) Actually helpful to designers when they are making design decisions. 3) Completely open source Java. 4) Leading edge (supports the latest UML specifications). 5) Modular and extensible. 6) Integrated with the web and other Tigris tools. Tufts Libraries Catalogs Databases: A-Z Electronic Journals Subject Resources ... Search Engines Updated: October 23, 2000 The Map Room of the Tisch Library, located on Level 2, houses two important geographic resources for the Tufts community. It contains an extensive collection of topographical maps of the United States produced by the U.S. Coast and Geologic Survey . In addition, it is the location for the Tufts Center for Geographic Information, a teaching and research facility for the use of Geographic Information Systems, or GIS. The six networked computer workstations have a wide variety of software programs, such as ArcView, ArcInfo, and IDRISI, as well as numerous datasets that allow the user to produce maps that graphically show the geographic distribution of information. The resulting maps can show the environmental impact of pollution sources on watersheds, delineate the history of changing land use in an urban environment, or provide an atlas of the ancient world. The GIS Center provides workshops and is used as a classroom facility for courses with a GIS component. The Center's
