Grounded theory: a thumbnail sketch This is a resource file which supports the regular public program "areol" (action research and evaluation on line) offered twice a year beginning in mid-February and mid-July. For details email Bob Dick bdick@scu.edu.au or bd@uq.net.au ... in which a brief overview of the process of grounded theory is presented; grounded theory is an emergent research process with some similarities to action research Contents
It also explains clearly that grounded theory, Glaser style, is an emergent methodology. It provides some arguments to support that approach. Glaser (1998) is also relevant for beginners in grounded theory and is intended as a textbook for beginners.
  • index Overview Grounded theory begins with a research situation. Within that situation, your task as researcher is to understand what is happening there, and how the players manage their roles. You will mostly do this through observation, conversation and interview. After each bout of data collection you note down the key issues: this I have labelled " note-taking Constant comparison is the heart of the process. At first you compare interview (or other data) to interview (or other data). Theory emerges quickly. When it has begun to emerge you compare data to theory.

Abstract
This paper outlines a particular approach to building theory that was employed in a recent doctoral research project ( Pandit , 1995). Three aspects used in conjunction indicate the project's novelty: firstly, the systematic and rigorous application of the grounded theory method; secondly, the use of on-line computerised databases as a primary source of data; and, thirdly, the use of a qualitative data analysis software package to aid the process of grounded theory building.
Introduction
The principal objective of this paper is to reveal how the style of qualitative research known as the 'grounded theory approach' was applied in a research project ( Pandit , 1995) which attempted to generate a theoretical framework of corporate turnaround. Two lesser auxiliary objectives are firstly, to assess the utility of on-line computerised databases as a primary source of data for this type of research; and secondly, to assess the extent to which computer-based qualitative data analysis (QDA) software can aid this type of research. In the next section the elements of grounded theory are recalled. This is followed by a detailed account of the procedures and rationale of grounded theory building as employed in the project. Next, the generated theory of corporate turnaround is overviewed and finally, a reflexive account of the research experience is given.

A Comment on the Application of Grounded Theory to Accounting Research
Philip H. Siegel, Fiesta Mart Chair of Accounting
University of Houston-Downtown Recently accounting researchers have begun to explore and apply grounded research to behaviorally based problems (c.f. Blank et al. 1991; Siegel et al. 1994). Grounded theory is a qualitative approach which can be used to analyze social processes that are present within human interactions. Application of the theory results in explanations of important social processes or structures that are derived (grounded) in the empirical data. The grounded theory approach is based on the idea that a group or groups share specific social psychological problems that are not necessarily articulated (Glaser and Strauss 1967). Grounded theory is a form of field-studies that systematically applies procedural steps to develop an exploration about a particular phenomenon. As Strauss and Corbin (1990) explain:
A grounded theory, is one that is inductively derived from the study of the phenomenon it represents. That is, it is discovered, developed, and provisionally verified through systematic data. collection and analysis of data pertaining to that phenomenon. Therefore, data collection, analysis, and theory stand in reciprocal relationship with each other. One does not begin with a theory, then prove it. Rather, one begins with an area of study and what is relevant to that area is allowed to emerge.
The objective of grounded theory is the discovery of theoretically comprehensive explanations about particular phenomenon. The techniques and analytical procedures enable investigators to develop a substantive theory that is significant, theory-observation compatible, generalizable, reproducible and rigorous.

Abstract
This paper presents a brief outline of the defining characteristics of grounded theory methodology. Such a focus was motivated by a desire to bring the methodology into clearer focus. Particular attention is paid to the debate grounded theory has engendered. In doing so, a number of misunderstandings, dilemmas and criticisms are highlighted. Thus, while one research strategy should not be emphasised to the exclusion of others, this paper advocates the use of grounded theory methodology as a fresh approach in addressing some of the research challenges associated with network studies.
Introduction
This paper advocates that the grounded theory methodology can reduce the significance of some of the network research strategy challenges and also, addresses some of the criticisms levied at network studies. Grounded theory achieves these goals by adopting a process perspective as opposed to a unit perspective, positioning itself as being applicable for practitioners, by taking a social psychological level of analysis and by defining the research problem from the perspective of the focal actor. In doing so, a grounded theory approach can provide another avenue through which these problems can be investigated and more incisive business network analysis might be conducted. In the course of exploring this potential we will explicate grounded theory and its constituent parts, identify some of the problems of business network research and propose ways in which grounded theory might overcome them.

Introduction This paper describes a research project that endeavors to answer the question are there certain characteristics of an organization that will predict whether ICASE will be successful in that organization? The objective of this research is to discern the organizational and technological factors that contribute to successful implementation of Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) technology. Organizations using ICASE tools were studied to learn what organizational and technological factors contributed to their success, or lack of success. CASE technology refers to the software that assists in the development of application software. The promise of improved productivity has led information systems managers to invest heavily in CASE technology. Despite the significant level of investment in CASE tools, no previous research has considered whether an organization that was successful in implementing integrated CASE (ICASE) technology had a particular profile. ICASE tools provide the greatest benefit to an organization that is developing application systems because of their completeness and integration. ICASE tools share the following characteristics: 1) they allow for the development and maintenance of a repository that is shared across all phases of the life cycle, 2) they provide tools to complete the tasks of all phases of the life cycle, and 3) they provide a way of expressing and storing the firm's business rules.

Introduction
Studying the context in which information systems development tools are meant to function requires an appropriate research methodology. The two studies illustrate the use of such a methodology. In these studies grounded theory, an ethnographic approach, is used to capture information needed to explicate the interactions between teams and information systems development tools, and organizations and information systems development tools. According to Glaser and Strauss (1967) theories are either deduced from logical assumptions or generated from observation. Grounded theory is a qualitative approach that generates theory from observation. It provides the structure often lacking in other qualitative approaches without sacrificing flexibility or rigor. The resulting theory is an explanation of categories, their properties, and the relationships among them. The results lead to an evolutionary body of knowledge that is grounded in data.

The Studies
This comparison illustrates ways in which grounded theory can be used to analyze and understand interview data. The first study assesses the use of a software engineering tool, dialog charts, by systems designers (Calloway, 1988). The second study investigates organizations that use Integrated Computer-Aided Software Engineering (ICASE) tools (Knapp, 1995). We discuss the similarities and differences in the methods of information generation, data collection, data analysis and reduction, and data synthesis.

Daniel St. University of Illinois Champaign, IL 61820 USA s-star1@uiuc.edu Submitted to the conference, "Information Systems and Qualitative Research," IFIPS WG 8.2, Philadelphia, May, 1997. September 5, 1996 "There are some striking similarities...between field work and library research. When someone stands in the library stacks, he is, metaphorically, surrounded by voices begging to be heard." (Glaser and Strauss, 1967: 163) "Classification is an uncovering of the thought-content of a written or expressed unit of thought...The reference librarian....applies the classification scheme in the ultimate stage of library service which is effecting contact between the right reader and the right unit of thought in a personal way." (Ranganathan, 1951:116) Abstract: This paper compares the qualitative method of grounded theory with the construction of faceted classifications in library and information science. Both struggle with a core problem: the representation of vernacular words and processes, empirically discovered, which will, although ethnographically faithful, be powerful beyond the single instance or case study. Both began as reform movements against powerfully-entrenched a priori schemes with claims on universality. As the landscape of information retrieval is shifting rapidly (with networked distributed computing, digital libraries, large-scale and enoromously powerful search engines), a comparison of grounded theory and faceted classification offers some important cross-fertilization. Some of the challenges faced by classification in environments such as the world-wide web or large digital libraries

H AIG S T HESIS In brief, Haig's thesis is that grounded theory is more than the naive Baconian induction some critics charge it to be. Nevertheless, shortfalls do plague grounded theory that recent developments in scientific realism can correct. Ultimately, Haig argues that his reconstruction of grounded theory blurs traditional boundaries between social and scientific methods. G ROUNDED T HEORY B ACKGROUND
B REAK WITH T RADITIONAL S OCIAL S CIENCE M ETHODOLOGY As this study bridges at least three fields (social science research, philosophy of science, and educational theory), it may be useful, by way of introduction, to elaborate the theoretical landscape that spawned the emergence of grounded theory during the 1960s. During the 1950s and 1960s, social science research was dominated by hypothetico-deductive theory. In particular, the "great men" theories of Weber, Durkheim, Cooley, Mead, and others occupied a new generation of scholars whose work focused on testing them.
