Grounded Theory as Scientific Method
Brian D. Haig
University of Canterbury
G ROUNDED T HEORY During the last 30 years sociologists Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss have formulated and developed in great detail their grounded theory perspective on social science research. S CIENTIFIC M ETHOD I shall call this general account of scientific method "abductive explanatory inferentialism" (AEI). While this is an extended label, it does serve the useful purpose of suggesting that the theory of scientific method is centrally concerned with generating theories abductively and appraising them in terms of what philosophers have come to call inference to the best explanation. I shall explain these two related ideas later. P ROBLEM F ORMULATION According to the AEI theory of scientific method, the selection and formulation of problems are of central importance to scientific research. In fact, by adopting a particular account of scientific problems, AEI method is able to explain how inquiry is possible, and at the same time provide guidance for the conduct of research. The account of problems that boasts these twin virtues is the constraint-composition theory. As mentioned earlier, Glaser and Strauss clearly recognize the importance of understanding method in the context of problem-solving. However, although they offer some thoughtful remarks about research problems, they do not give the matter systematic attention.

16 Grounded theory (1) Speaking only for myself ... These days, "grounded theory" is usually taken to mean the approach of that name initiated by Glaser and Strauss. Or, more often, the later elaborations of Strauss and Corbin. There is a sense, however, in which you might talk about theory grounded in data or experience. I think "grounded theory" is an appropriate term for that, too. It is in this more generic sense that I wish to talk about grounded theory here. Action research is well placed to develop this form of grounded theory. In this form, theory development observes well the intention of the earlier Glaser and Strauss work. Theory is developed progressively as the data are collected. It has local relevance and is practical. Glaser, Barney G. and Strauss, Anselm L. Anselm L. Strauss
    18th December 1916 - 5th September 1996
Sociologist Anselm Strauss, 79, died on the 5th September in San Francisco of a heart attack. Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Francisco, Strauss was internationally known as a social science methodologist and as a medical sociologist, especially for his pioneering attention to the problems of chronic illness. Strauss developed an innovative method of qualitative research called grounded theory, with sociologist Barney Glaser, which was widely adopted in sociology, nursing, education and social work. An alumnus of the University of Virginia, Strauss received both Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He came to the University of California, San Francisco in 1960 at the behest of the dean of nursing to teach research methods in a new doctoral program in nursing, the first in the Western USA. He had built this research unit into a full-fledged doctoral program in sociology by 1968. As Professor, Founder, Chair and visionary of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Strauss forged a unique focus on health, illness and qualitative research. He became Professor Emeritus in 1987, but continued teaching and researching until his death. Strauss' inquiries into medical work included studies of dying patients, an array of chronic illnesses, the psychology of pain, psychiatric practice, kinds of medical work, risk and the politics of medical care. During the course of a long career, he made contributions to several other branches of sociology as well, including urban sociology and social psychology.

    Grounded Theory
    Discussion drawn from:
    • Glaser and Strauss. 1967. The Discovery of Grounded Theory Strauss and Corbin. 1990. Basics of Qualitative Research
    Goals and Perspective
The phrase "grounded theory" refers to theory that is developed inductively from a corpus of data. If done well, this means that the resulting theory at least fits one dataset perfectly. This contrasts with theory derived deductively from grand theory, without the help of data, and which could therefore turn out to fit no data at all. Grounded theory takes a case rather than variable perspective, although the distinction is nearly impossible to draw. This means in part that the researcher takes different cases to be wholes, in which the variables interact as a unit to produce certain outcomes. A case-oriented perspective tends to assume that variables interact in complex ways, and is suspicious of simple additive models, such as ANOVA with main effects only. Part and parcel of the case-orientation is a comparative orientation. Cases similar on many variables but with different outcomes are compared to see where the key causal differences may lie. This is based on John Stuart Mills' (1843, A system of logic: Ratiocinative and Inductive) method of differences essentially the use of (natural) experimental design. Similarly, cases that have the same outcome are examined to see which conditions they all have in common, thereby revealing necessary causes.

    Biographical
Both trained in Sociology. Glaser at Columbia, Strauss at Chicago. (Columbia was known for theory and for quantitative studies; Chicago was known for qualitative, empirical work that was criticized for lack of integration with theory.) Both ended up at UCSF, a hotbed of social science and medicine (as in, medical anthropology, medical sociology, nursing, etc.). They started working with nurses in ethnographic settings. Wrote The Discovery as a way to justify and provide rigor for qualitative and inductive methods. The two then had a terrible falling out which included strong criticism, name-calling and legal action. Glaser appears to have gone insane (paranoid) and Strauss died in 1996 (Sept. 5). In spite of his insanity, Glaser seems to have had the deeper understanding of grounded theory. In particular, he emphasized that grounded theory was about theory generation, not verification, and that verication is outside the scope of grounded theory.
