Resources for grounded theory approaches Introduction: "Grounded theory" in the analysis of qualitative data: David Thomas In research proposals, some researchers make reference to the use of a "grounded theory" approach in the proposed analysis of qualitative data. Given that you refer a "grounded theory" analysis as necessarily using the constant comparison method, what term would be used to refer to an inductive approach (that starts with the data and develops categories from the raw data) which does not specifically use the constant comparison method? They only alternative I can think of is an "inductive data analysis" I suspect this latter approach is quite common, but not usually given a distinctive label. Comment 1:Dr Gillian White I believe that we are "bastardising" research methodologies these days by not being true to either (a) the method as originally developed or (b) the adaptations as disciples of the method have encouraged the method to evolve, and acknowledging these adaptations. The constant comparative method, for example, allows for the development of categories often through theoretical sampling, which is a significant feature of grounded theory.

    Grounded theory
Grounded Theory is most accurately described as a research method in which the theory is developed from the data, rather than the other way around. That makes this is an inductive approach, meaning that it moves from the specific to the more general. The method of study is essentially based on three elements: concepts, categories and propositions, or what was originally called “hypotheses”. However, concepts are the key elements of analysis since the theory is developed from the conceptualization of data, rather than the actual data. bodyOffer(33061) Grounded theory is often perceived as a method which separates theory and data but others insist that the method actually combines the two. Data collection, analysis and theory formulation are undeniably connected in a reciprocal sense, and the grounded theory approach incorporates explicit procedures to guide this. This is especially evident in that according to grounded theory, the processes of asking questions and making comparisons are specifically detailed to inform and guide analysis and to facilitate theorizing process. For example, it is specifically stated that the research questions must be open and general rather than formed as specific hypotheses, and that the emergent theory should account for a phenomenon that is relevant to participants. There are three distinct yet overlapping processes of analysis involved in grounded theory from which sampling procedures are typically derived. These are: open coding, axial coding and selective coding. Open coding is based on the concept of data being “cracked open” as a means of identifying relevant categories. Axial coding is most often used when categories are in an advanced stage of development; and selective coding is used when the "core category", or central category that correlates all other categories in the theory, is identified and related to other categories.

It is distinct from any other research tradition in which they may have been trained. Learning this new mode of thinking sometimes creates difficulties for students. They must learn to listen, letting the data speak to them. They must learn to relax, adopting a more flexible, less preplanned, and less controlled approach to research." ^^TOP^^

DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND ITS CONTEXT
Grounded theory method OF QUALITATIVE research is an INDUCTIVE approach that uses a systematic set of procedures to arrive at a theory about basic social processes. The aim of this approach is to discover underlying social forces that shape human behavior by means of INTERVIEWS with open-ended questions and through skilled OBSERVATIONS (LoBiondo-Wood and Haber, 1994).
RULES / ASSUMPTIONS FOR USING THE DESIGN
    • An exhaustive literature review is not done to allow theory to emerge directly from the data and remain "grounded in" the data. Literature is reviewed continuously throughout data collection and analysis. Sample includes people who are experiencing the social process being investigated. When describing the findings, descriptive language must be used to provide reader with steps in the process and the logic of the method.

    Grounded Theory
Back to Types of Qualitative Observational Research In this approach, researchers are responsible for developing other theories that emerge from observing a group. The theories are "grounded" in the group's observable experiences, but researchers add their own insight into why those experiences exist. In essence, grounded theory attempts to "reach a theory or conceptual understanding through step wise, inductive process" (Banning 1995).
