Definition of Discipline Activities: Hydrogeology
The hydrogeology discipline involves field investigations and reviews of the following typical activities: a) analysis and assessment of subsurface conditions by geotechnical drilling , geophysical surveys or other subsurface sampling methods,
b) evaluation and determination of the direction and rate of ground-water flow,
c) modeling of contaminant transport in shallow, subsurface sediments and ground-water systems,
d) assessment of impact on ground- water supplies
e) evaluation and assessment of human exposure and risk assessment , and
f) development and assessment of ground-water remediation system design, operation and effectiveness. Each of the above activities, among others, can be involved in litigation. Inappropriate or misrepresented data or methods are, in many instances, the basis of litigation involving activities conducted within the discipline of hydrogeology, practiced in some cases by unqualified individuals not having appropriate training and experience and the associated professional certifications and/or state licenses. Many of these activities also involve an assessment of chemical constituents and other physiochemical and microbiological conditions present in the subsurface for establishing the relative extent of exposure and for assessing ground-water remediation methods or system effectiveness. After the remediation system has been designed and installed, monitoring of ongoing conditions and changes introduced into the subsurface is required to assess effectiveness of the remediation method employed. Data for such evaluations can be poor or absent, making an assesment of such activities difficult. Disagreements involving errors and omissions in such designs often result in litigation.

Back to UMass Geosciences Dept. Program Statement The goal of the hydrogeology program is to provide graduate students with solid practical training in hydrogeology that combines a strong field-based approach to problem solving with rigorous quantitative analysis. In addition, it is also recognized that multidisciplinary skills are an integral part of hydrologic analysis and are an extremely important aspect of hydrogeological training. These objectives are accomplished by giving students: a) practical instruction in both the classroom and field; b) access to field and lab equipment necessary to perform basic research; c) exposure to computer and quantitative analysis so that graduates from the program have the requisite quantitative skills for the environmental field; and, d) freedom to explore other academic interests that will augment hydrogeological training. Hydrogeology/Geophysical Field Site With funds from two National Science Foundation grants, Laurie Brown and I have constructed a field site where students can be exposed to the techniques commonly used in hydrogeologic and geophysical field research. The intent of this dedicated field site is to give students the opportunity to gain practical experience in hydrogeological and geophysical field methods. These methods include but are not limited to: a) drilling and monitoring well installation techniques; b) groundwater sampling and monitoring practices; c) applying surface and downhole geophysical techniques to interpret subsurface geology and investigate possible contaminant threats; d) aquifer testing; and, e) hydrochemical testing. The field site consists of two components: a well field and a geophysical test site. The well field consists of one, four-inch pumping well and six, two-inch observation wells. This site will be used to teach students how to perform aquifer tests (pumping tests), tracer tests, slug tests, step tests and to demonstrate water quality sampling protocols, among other things. These are all fundamental skills needed to conduct research in hydrogeology. The geophysical test site consists of a series of test pits and trenches where objects of various sizes and shapes are buried at known locations. These objects include drums, pipes, cables, pvc pipes and miscellaneous debris. Students will use a variety of surface geophysical techniques to try and decipher the depth, shape and type of object buried in each test pit.

Springs are places where groundwater encounters the land surface and flows out. The occurrence of springs is controlled by the location of subsurface geologic features such as rock formations or geologic faults. At the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, at east two north-trending faults cut across the site. These faults juxtapose different geologic formations at depth. West of the faults, groundwater moves through the subsurface in relatively permeable layers of coarse-grained material (sands and gravels).
These permeable layers are called aquifers. On the other side of the fault, the coarse-grained sands and gravels are replaced with finer-grained sands, silts and sometimes even clay. These finer-grained deposits are not nearly as efficient at transmitting groundwater. So, when the groundwater moving through the coarse-grained geologic formations on the west encounters the finer-grained layers, much of it is forced to flow upward and leak out on the surface. In the case of the Las Vegas Springs, approximately 4,000 gallons per minute of groundwater "leaked" out (Jones and Callahan, 1975, page 5). With this much water, the springs created a lush oasis in the desert, suitable for domestic and recreational uses. Water upwelled in circular pools, 20 to 30 feet in diameter, and the spring water from the pools drained eastward to form the Las Vegas Creek. The water upwelling in the pools was described by Mormon missionary George W. Bean, who visited the Las Vegas Springs in 1856:

Return to Paul Y's Home Page Historical Roots The University of Newcastle lies at the heart of the Great Northern Coalfield, and only a few miles from the fringes of the North Pennine Orefield. It is not surprising, therefore, that research related to mining and its impacts has been pursued here since the first foundations of this institution in 1834. Apart from the geology, petrology and geochemistry of coal and hydrocarbons (for which the University's Postgraduate Research Institute in Fossil Fuels and Environmental Geochemistry remains internationally renowned), Newcastle has a long record of research into the industrial chemistry of carbon, the occupational health problems of miners (and more recently, the public health effects of opencast mines), the revegetation of spoil heaps, and all aspects of mining engineering (the latter until 1988, when the Newcastle department was merged with that of Leeds University). Over these many years, problems of minewater management have been frequently addressed by Newcastle researchers. Some of the earliest papers anywhere in the world to deal scientifically with minewater chemistry were by published by staff of (what is now) the University of Newcastle (Dunn, 1877; Bedson; 1887; Clowes, 1889; see also Banks

Most works are in English, and this is not an exhaustive bibliography on the subject; however, it serves as a key to works that in turn lead the researcher to additional material. The intent is to provide a selected list of primary sources to those who are relatively unfamiliar with karst research. This edition contains 124 citations and 6 journals. Listings such as this one are inherently biased due to the background of the persons who compile them. Undoubtably many worthy publications have not been placed on this list.
