Note: Viewers can convert these pdf files to html through Adobe. Ground water is the largest and most readily available source of potable water in Florida. Hydrogeology is the study of ground water with emphasis given to its chemistry, modes of movement, and relation to the geologic environment. Hydrogeology integrates geology, hydrology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and engineering to understand the occurrence and movement of water in the complex subsurface environment. Water-bearing sedimentary rocks in Florida can generally be divided into two types: siliciclastics (sands, silts, clays) or carbonates (limestone and dolostone). All of these rocks, no matter how "hard" or solid they appear, contain some voids or pores, which may contain water. Two properties that are common to all these rocks, and which control the movement of their ground water, are porosity and permeability. Porosity and permeability are intimately related. Porosity refers to the pores themselves, while permeability is a measure of a rock's ability to allow fluids to move through its pores. For a rock to be permeable, its pores must be interconnected so that water can move freely.

Edwards Aquifer hypothetical cross section Table 1 shows the stratigraphic units of a typical Edwards Aquifer cross section. The aquifer is an association of Early Cretaceous age limestones overlying the Glen Rose Limestone and underlying the Del Rio Clay. The base of the aquifer is confined by the upper part of the Glen Rose Formation and in the artesian section, the top of the aquifer is confined by the Del Rio Formation. The lateral boundaries of the Edwards Aquifer consist of groundwater divides on the east and west near Kyle in Hays County and near Brackettville in Kinney County, respectively. The aquifer is bounded on the south by the "bad water line", (line marking water with more than 1000 mg/l of total dissolved solids), and on the north by the northern most edge of the Balcones Fault Zone. The Edwards Group and associated limestones were deposited as shallow marine platform carbonates consisting of reef and deep marine lithofacies in the western portion of the aquifer region. Most of the Edwards Group and associated limestones within the San Marcos Platform and the Devils River Reef Trend were subjected to subaerial exposure after deposition which enhanced the development of secondary porosity (Maclay and Land, 1988). Enhanced porosity has also occurred along the high angle faults and fractures of the Balcones Fault Zone. The Edwards Aquifer receives water primarily from streams and rivers originating from the catchment areas on the Edwards Plateau ( Figure 2 The tributaries crossing the recharge area include the Guadalupe River, the Blanco River, and headwaters of the Comal and San Marcos Rivers. Small creeks in the headwaters are the Dry Comal, Alligator, York, Purgatory, and Sink Creeks.

Ground water supplies almost all drinking water in Denmark. However, a number of problems related to the development of ground water have become evident during the last few decades: Ground water is a limited resource; abstraction of ground water can be a threat to other parts of the hydrological system; and the quality of ground water is threatened by a number of sources. Objectives
The main issues studied by the Hydrogeology Group are (i) methods of quantifying catchment scale water balance and the ground-water resource, (ii) interaction between ground water and surface water, and (iii) rate and quality of ground-water recharge under varying soils and vegatations. Activities
The activities are to a large degree based on field studies. Drilling and geophysical methods are applied to map geology. Aquifer properties are measured in the field as well as in the laboratory. The distribution and quality of water in the unsaturated zone is studied in two 7-8 m deep wells. Stream depletion due to pumping from wells is studied via experiments. Integrated water balance of aquifers, streams and lakes is studied on varying field scales. The influence of delayed drainage from unconfined aquifers is studied in the field and in the lab. Data are analysed using analytical as well as numerical models for flow and transport.

    Waste Disposal Area: Hydrogeology
    The geology and hydrogeology of the waste disposal area are important for a number of reasons:
    • the effect that they have on the stability of the land beneath the tailings storage facilities
    • the groundwater system, including the direction and volume of flow
    • how the groundwater system and the tailings storage facility drainage systems affect each other (both surface water drainage and underdrainage systems)
    • the effects of the tailings storage facilities on ground water and receiving water both during construction and in the long term.
    Studies carried out prior to the original applications in 1985 determined that the then proposed site for tailings and waste disposal was highly favourable for the safe and secure containment of tailings and waste rock. Recent investigations have confirmed those studies. A generalised cross-section through the waste disposal area is shown below.

    Hydrogeology is the study of groundwater . Groundwater is water found below the surface of the earth. About half of Maine’s homeowners are practicing hydrogeologists, because they have, with the help of a well driller, explored for, found, and are actively utilizing groundwater. These homeowners derive their drinking water from private water wells located on their property. All of these wells, regardless of the type or depth, get their water from groundwater . Here are a few basic geologic concepts you should be aware of when considering having a well installed, or evaluating an existing well during a home purchase. Infiltration: How did the water get down there? All groundwater originated as surface water, either in the form of rain, snow or other precipitation, or as water collected in surface impoundments like rivers, streams and lakes. Water that falls on the ground, or runs over it, infiltrates into the spaces between particles of soil, and continues down into cracks and fractures in the bedrock below. Have you ever poured a bucket of water on the ground and watched it disappear? If you have, you’ve conducted a successful infiltration experiment. Unfortunately, if you’ve spilled gasoline, paint, household cleaners, or other chemicals on the ground and watched them disappear, you’ve not only conducted a successful infiltration experiment, YOU’VE CONTAMINATED YOUR GROUNDWATER!!! Infiltration is the mechanism for contaminating groundwater. Never dispose of things by dumping them on the ground.

    HYDROGEOLOGY AND KARST
    The deep karst of the Kugitangtau Ridge was formed in three stages. The first stage was developed on a plain during the Late Cretaceous. The formed cavities, to all appearances, represented a large labyrinth of phreatic joint between two rivers or from the river into the sea, similar to the labyrinth caves of Podolia (Ukraine). The cavities were completely and rather quickly colmatated by clay sediments that had remained in them after the uprising of the ridge in the Paleogene. The third stage of karst formation, which continues to the present day, copies the hydrogeology of the previous stage, but it differs by the far smaller amount of water, which is not enough for the normal karst process. The development of caves, including the formation of their new extent, is continued in dry upper levels, using elements of the inner circulation of water and of chemical, as well as biochemical, factors such as the bacterial cycle of sulfur, the secondary fluorine cycle supported by the former sulfur cycle and so on that will be discussed below. The caves are similar to Lechuguilla Cave and Carlsbad Cavern, New Mexico, USA, in their unusual morphology, very intensive processes involving sulfur, and unique mineralogy. The participation of the neighboring gas-bearing basins that partially themselves discharged through the karst cavities has been proven to be a factor of the genesis of the New Mexico caves and partially determined the morphology and amount of sulfur. The geology of Kugitangtau is similar, revealing gas collectors, a part of which is empty now. It is possible that similar processes were active in these cases, but direct evidence is lacking.

    In the vicinity of an alluvial fan and alluvial plain, we investigate the following: 1. recharge water, 2. underground water, 3. amount of precipitation, 4. evaporated water, 5. well water for factories, 6. distribution of ground water.
    Once the system of infiltration and evaporation is made clear, we suggest effective future plans for ground water use.
    We also investigate the discharge of dams, the volume and speed of rivers, quantity of the lifted water, temperature and direction of underground flow. Resistivity surveys are one of the most effective methods for groundwater investigations. All the datasets will be combined to map the distribution of groundwater.
    @Distribution and use of groundwater
    People have been using groundwater since ancient times. However, each year water use far outlays water reserves. This is due to the increase of commercial water use such as factories, farms, and snow-melting. To improve the present conditions, we investigate wells, water works and sewerage to sum up the total water use. Through this we suggest the future plan of water use.
