The SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science brings together SIAM members and other scientists and engineers with an interest in the
mathematical and computational aspects of imaging. The reconstruction, enhancement, segmentation, analysis, registration, compression, representation, and tracking of two and three dimensional
images are vital to many areas of science, medicine, and engineering. As a result, increasingly sophisticated mathematical, statistical, and
computational methods are being employed in these research areas, which may be referred to as "Imaging Science." These techniques include
transform and orthogonal series methods, nonlinear optimization, numerical linear algebra, integral equations, partial differential equations, Bayesian
and other statistical inverse estimation methods, operator theory, differential geometry, information theory, interpolation and approximation, inverse
problems, computer graphics and vision, stochastic processes, and others.

    Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
    Professors David Heeger and Brian Wandell lead a group of post-doctoral fellows and graduate students studying activity in the human brain using magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) . Our experiments focus mainly on analyses of the visual pathways. As part of our work, we have also devised various pieces of software and analytical methods that are distributed to the broader community of scientists. Currently, publications from our group are posted on the web-pages of individual investigators. We plan to create a list of these publications here in the next few months.

    About Imaging Science and Biomedical Engineering The Departments of Medical BioPhysics and Diagnostic Radiology merged in 1998 to become Imaging Science and Biomedical Engineering. The former Departments occupied immediately adjacent accommodation and, prior to merging, already worked closely together sharing imaging and computing facilities. There is now a joint research strategy for imaging in place drawing together both non-clinical interests in machine vision, image analysis (the Wolfson Image Analysis Unit) and imaging physics, and clinical interests in musculo-skeletal, cardiac, oncological and neuro- imaging. Imaging Science and Biomedical Engineering (ISBE) is based in the Stopford Medical School and maintains strong academic links with Computer Science and both academic and clinical links with the radiology departments in the University teaching hospitals. The academic staff currently comprises four Professors, 5.5 Senior Lecturers (including a joint appointment with Anesthesia) and 5 Lecturers, supported by technical, secretarial and administrative, radiographic and nursing staff. There is also a full-time Research Fellow in MR Physics. There are currently 2 clinical diagnostic suites, centered on magnetic resonance imaging and bone densitometry. Patient facilities, medical staff offices and clinical radiological conference rooms are situated within ISBE in the Medical School. A Neuroradiology group was established in 1993 and strengthened by the appointment in October 1995 of Professor Alan Jackson, to a chair in Neuroradiology. The activities of the group have expanded rapidly with currently 12 clinical staff, research associates, and students undertaking neuroradiological research projects.
