ISS General Description:
The Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) consists of a wide angle camera, with angular resolution of 60 microradians per pixel, and a narrow angle camera, with angular resolution of 6.0 microradians per pixel. The sensors are 1024x1024 CCD arrays.
ISS Scientific Objectives:
  • To map the 3-dimensional structure and motions within the Saturn/Titan atmospheres.
  • To study the composition, distribution, and physical properties of clouds and aerosols.
  • To investigate scattering, absorption, and solar heating within the S/T atmospheres.
  • To search for evidence of lightning, aurorae, airglow, and planetary oscillations.
  • To study the gravitational interactions between the rings and Saturn's satellites.
  • To determine the rate and nature of energy and momemtum transfer within the rings.
  • To determine ring thickness and sizes, composition, and physical nature of ring particles.

About
Contacts Programmes Modules ... Entry to the Programme Summary B.Sc.(Hons) in Diagnostic Imaging Science B.Sc.(Hons) in Radiation Oncology Science Introd uction The Division of Radiography is part of the School of Health and Social Care and comprises both Diagnostic and Therapeutic disciplines. The Diagnostic discipline leads to the BSc(Hons) Diagnostic Imaging Science and the Therapeutic discipline leads to the BSc(Hons) Radiation Oncology Science The Division of Radiography is located in the Govan Mbeki Health Building, opened in 1998. As well as having access to classrooms and laboratories, there is also a self contained X-ray facility and a radiation treatment planning laboratory within the accommodation of the Division. The Division offers two programmes. Therefore, first hand knowledge of both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography is essential to allow you to choose the area of study best suited to you. The only way to make this choice is to visit hospitals departments specialising in each type of radiography for at least half a day each to enable you to observe the work of a clinical radiographer. During such a visit you can talk to staff who will give you an insight into what the job entails. Often student radiographers will be there and you will be able to find out about the programmes 'from the horse's mouth'.

[83.03] High Contrast Imaging Science with Adaptive Optics
W. Brandner (ESO) Over the last ten years, the concept of Adaptive Optics (AO) has matured from early experimental stages to a standard observing tool, which is now available at many large optical and near-infrared telescope facilities. Indeed, AO has become an integral part of almost all present and future large telescope initiatives, and will be essential in exploiting the full potential of the large optical interferometers currently under construction. This talk focuses on AO combined with high contrast imaging techniques (e.g., classical Lyot coronagraph, achromatic interfero coronagraph, or dual imaging), and scientific results obtained using these techniques. Science examples include the search for faint (substellar) companions next to bright stars, the study of polarization signatures of circumstellar disks around young stars, and host galaxies of AGNs and QSOs. This research acknowledges support by NSF and ESO.
