    The quality of the air we breathe, both indoors and out, has a great impact on lung health. Fragile lung tissue is easily damaged by pollutants in the air, resulting in increased risk of asthma and allergies, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. Although the US has made great strides in cleaning up smog and soot in the nation's cities, outdoor air pollution still threatens the health of millions of Americans. In the last decade, indoor air quality has also been recognized as significant concern. Levels of many common pollutants have been shown to be 2 to 5 times higher, and occasionally more than 100 times higher than they are outdoors.     "Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can damage their health but may not know that indoor air pollution can also have significant effects. EPA studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor air levels of many pollutants may be 2-5 times, and occasion more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels. These levels of indoor air pollutants are of particular concern because it is estimated that most people spend as much as 90% of their time indoors." ( EPA's Air Quality Home Page ). Unlike outdoor air, indoor air is recycled again and again. This causes it to trap and build up pollutants. Common pollutants include dust, mold and spores, pollen, pet dander and smoke.     Air Pollution in the Greater Houston Area
    How bad is the air quality in our area? According to statistics gathered by the National Resource Defense Council , Houston ranked 15th. (out of 239 U.S. cities) for "premature deaths attributable to particulate air pollution." While pollution levels in North Harris and Montgomery County are certainly lower than in central Houston, our proximity to a city with high pollution ratings is cause for concern. If we can't control the quality of our outdoor air, we can control the air quality inside our homes and busineses.

    Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of air in the indoor environment within a building or an institution or commercial facility. These characteristics can be influenced by many factors, even though these buildings or facilities do not have industrial processes and operations found in factories and plants.
    Factors that influence IAQ include the following.
    Inadequate supply of outside air.
    Contamination arising from sources within the building (e.g., combustion products including carbon monoxide and environmental tobacco smoke; volatile organic compounds from building materials, fabric furnishings, carpet, adhesives, fresh paint, new paneling, and cleaning products; ozone from office equipment).
    Contamination from outside the building (e.g., ozone, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter) through air intakes, infiltration, open doors, and windows.

    Indoor Air Pollution: A Serious Public Health Problem

    We spend most of our time indoors surrounded by sources of air pollution: consumer products, gas appliances, building materials, cigarettes, and furniture can all contribute to the problem. Yet, the toxic emissions from many of these sources are not controlled or are only partially controlled by federal, state, or local laws.
    This brochure will tell you about indoor air pollution and what the California Air Resources Board (ARB) is doing about it.
    Evaluating the Risk
    In a 1987 study, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranked indoor air pollution fourth in cancer risk among the 13 top environmental problems analyzed. Indoor
    radon ranked first. What factors contribute to the high risk from indoor air pollution?
    First, people spend most of their time indoors. A recent ARB-sponsored study found that Californians spend an average of 87% of their 24-hour day indoors. If pollutants are present indoors, people will almost certainly inhale them.
    Second, indoor air pollutant levels are often higher than those outdoors. Research by the ARB, the EPA, and others has shown that indoor levels of some pollutants, such as formaldehyde, chloroform, and styrene, range from 2 to 50 times higher than outdoor levels. Exposure to pollutants such as environmental tobacco smoke and radon occurs almost entirely indoors. For most of us, the amount of air pollution that we breathe is primarily determined by what is in the indoor air.
