I just want to add a short comment on the subject of paleoanthropology,
that is, the scientific study of fossils and artifacts of early humans
and their ancestry.
I have noticed all my life that several times per year, a new discovery
is made in this field, and it causes a sensation in the press, and
among theologians and other communities. Then it is refuted by a new
discovery the next year.
Theory in paleoanthropology must be very frustrating, like building
sand castles on the beach. As soon as you have a nice structure,
a new wave comes along and destroys it. And all the lay people and theologians are always standing around watching you. The reason this happens, of course, is that the database is so thin. (One piece of a jawbone here, one bit of DNA there, etc.)

  • Next message: Glenn Morton: "RE: paleoanthropology" Anyone out there who can recommend a good introductory
    book to paleoanthropology?
It should not be too technical, but neither too
'light,' of you know what I mean.
Additionally, if it is also treating the theme of
man's spiritual origin, perhaps what could be called
paleopsychology, that would be very neat.

I am a phsycian (Clinical Geneticist) who wants to switch careers to
physical anthropology. I am in the process of reading everything I
can get my hands on and am learning molecular biology protocols (ie
pcr, extraction of DNA from archival and hopefully fossilized
specimens). I am not, however, in a position to leave my job and go
to graduate school elsewhere (there's no graduate program in
anthropolgy where I am). Any suggestions for pursuing my career goals
short of moving? I am ultimately interested in origins of man in the
Western Hemisphere both with fossil and archeological data and DNA
data specifically mitochondrial. LawrenceGL L. Leichtman, M.D. Eastern Virginia Medical School Norfolk, VA

    The Pleistocene:
    dog domestication
Information on the DNA of wolves and dogs was reported in Vila, et al. 1997. SOURCE: Dogs were domesticated from grey wolves ( Canis lupus ); not from coyotes or jackals, and not from the Ethiopian wolf, Canis simensis LINEAGES: Every breed is a mixture of many DNA types, so the original lines of descent were mixed before modern breeds were formed. The Vila et al. paper classed the DNA types into 4 groups. [] Group IV, a lineage that occurs in a few European breeds, is very close to some wolves of Romania and western Russia. This could have been a separate domestication. More likely, a hunter brought home a female wolf pup, which grew up and mated with dogs. Either way, it is quite recent, no more than 20,000 years. [] Group III is found mostly among northern breeds, such as Alaskan and Siberian Huskies, some German Shepherds, a Jamthund; but also in one of the Mexican Hairless. This could also result from a cross with already domesticated dogs, but it is older, on the order of 50,000 years. [] Group I is the most ancient and diverse lineage. The Vila paper has a tree showing relations of the wolf and dog types. We can compare the branches of this tree with the geographical origins of the dogs (as indicated by their breed); there does seem to be some correlation. The 'bootstrap support' for this lineage tree is low, which means that other trees would fit the data almost as well. But looking at the data, there seem to be characteristic European vs. southern patterns. The tree shows two main branches, with some left over.

This subject is known by the tonguetwisting name of paleoanthropology, the prefixpaleo having been used in Epoch 4 to denote the study of old, fossilized
    http://www.tufts.edu/as/wright_center/cosmic_evolution/docs/text/text_cult_1.htm
Anthropology is the scientific study of humanstheir cultures, their development, their origins. The word derives from the Greek anthropos , meaning man. Broadly conceived, modern anthropology mixes the results of fossil discoveries with the essentials of animal behavior in order to piece together a picture of twenty-first-century men and women. In this section we first concentrate on what the fossil record can tell us about human development. This subject is known by the tongue-twisting name of paleoanthropology , the prefix paleo having been used in Epoch 4 to denote the study of old, fossilized organisms (paleontology) and of ancient magnetism (paleomagnetism); here, paleoanthropology means the study of prehistoric humanity. In a later section, the behavior of advanced life formsstudies covered by the allied subjects of social anthropology and sociobiologywill help us refine the evolutionary paths implied by the fossils. Together, studies of fossilized life and of contemporary life should enable us to appreciate the essence of cultural evolution the changes in the ways, ideas, and behavior of society, especially among higher forms of life on Earth.
