Permaculture- A Beginner's Guide
"Permaculture offers a radical approach to food production and urban renewal, water, energy and pollution. It integrates ecology, landscape, organic gardening, architecture and agro-forestry in creating a rich and sustainable way of living. It uses appropriate technology giving high yields for low energy inputs, achieving a resource of great diversity and stability. The design principles are equally applicable to both urban and rural dwellers"- Bill Mollison

is a design system for creating sustainable human environments."
At the centre of Permaculture are the ethics of
Care of the Earth, Care of People, Limiting Consumption, and Fair Distribution of Resources
The practice of Permaculture enables people to, over time, "create systems that are ecologically sound and economically viable, which provide for their own needs, do not exploit or pollute and are therefore sustainable in the long term."
Mollison, Bill and Reny Mia Slay,. Introduction to Permaculture Permaculture is the thoughtful design and creation of systems which fulfil the needs of people and communites for the long term, without threatening natural systems Permaculture draws on ecological principles and the ingenuity and knowledge of humans. Permaculture is about working in partnership with nature, learning the lessons of ecology, and applying them to the way we live.

Impressions of East Timor
(a 1998 report by permaculture development consultant, Rob Allsop, on the gardens, markets and agriculture of East Timor)
Permaculture is a system of applied design for ecologically sustainable and convivial human settlement. The system was devised by scientist Bill Mollison and environmental designer David Holmgren in the late 1970s. Since then, permaculture has diversified and is now used as a comprehensive framework for design and development in a range of areas such as community work, urban agriculture, the design of settlements, overseas development aid, schools, the design of dwellings and their surrounding landscape. The essence of permaculture design is the application of a set of ethics and principles adapted to local conditions.

Permaculture
The word permaculture is a contraction of permanent agriculture or, more broadly, permanent culture. The simplest definition of permaculture is an ecological design science a way of understanding and using the many ways that parts of living systems interact or work together to generate harmony or dissonance among them. Bill Mollison, the Australian founder of permaculture, calls it a philosophy of working with rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless action; of looking at systems and people in all their functions, rather than asking only one yield of them; and of allowing systems to demonstrate their own evolutions.
A basic question that can be asked in two ways is: "What can I get from this land, or person?" or "What does this person, or land, have to give if I cooperate with them?"
Of these two approaches, the former leads to war and waste, the latter to peace and plenty.
Two of permaculture's most important principles are:
  • the Rule of Necessitous Use that we leave any natural system alone until we are, of strict necessity, forced to use it.

Permaculture ("Perm"anent "agri"culture and "Perma"nent "culture") is a sustainable design system stressing the harmonious interrelationship of humans, plants, animals and the Earth. To paraphrase the co-founder of Permaculture, designer Bill Mollison: "Permaculture principles focus on thoughtful designs for small-scale intensive systems which are labour efficient and which use biological resources instead of fossil fuels. Designs stress ecological connections and closed energy and material loops. The core of permaculture is design and the working relationships and connections between all things. Each component in a system performs multiple functions, and each function is supported by many elements. Key to efficient design is observation and replication of natural ecosystems, where designers maximize diversity with polycultures, stress efficient energy planning for houses and settlement, using and accelerating natural plant succession, and increasing the highly productive "edge-zones" within the system." Vries and Hugh Gravestein have between them over thirty years experience in Permaculture.

Permaculture
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Permaculture is designing sustainable human habitats by following nature's patterns.
Origins
In the mid two Australian ecologists, Dr. Bill Mollison and David Holmgren , started to develop ideas that they hoped could be used to create stable agricultural systems . This was in response to the rapidly growing use of destructive post-war industrial agricultural methods that were poisoning the land and water, reducing biodiversity , and removing billions of tonnes of soil from previously fertile landscapes. A design approach called 'permaculture' was the result and was first made public with the publication of Permaculture One in

Permaculture is an ethically based system for designing sustainable lifestyles. Wherever you live you can, by applying the principles of permaculture, working with, rather than against nature, actually improve your quality of life, while reducing your impact on the eco-system of which you are a part. The ethics of permaculture are simply stated: to care for the earth, to care for people, and to use all surplus for these two purposes. practical application of design principles derived from the observation of natural systems. Bill Mollison, the co-originator with David Holmgren, of the Permaculture concept, says: 'We can teach philosophy by teaching gardening, but we cannot teach gardening by teaching philosophy.' And in the garden, on the balcony, in the home paddock, or even on a pile of dirt in a neglected corner of a city street, is where Permaculture begins. not Mandala Garden.
