Quindalup An aboriginal word meaning "Happy Place"
Welcome to Quindalup Permaculture Farm Quindalup is a 134ha (335 acre) retreat situated about three hours drive west of Sydney in NSW, Australia. Close to state forests, national parks and lakes, Quindalup is a quiet and peaceful spot with resident kangaroos, abundant bird life and natural bush land. Several springs provide crystal clear water all year round and more than twelve dams support a variety of aquatic life. An organic vegetable garden and orchard supplies a wide variety of food. Cattle, chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, bees, goats, dogs and a cat are some of the other animals kept on the property. The Jakobi family moved to Quindalup in January 1999 to develop the property as a permaculture farm and education centre. Many friends and supporters have made significant contributions so far and over time we expect that some people will want to stay longer and help us develop Quindalup into a unique Eco-Village. If you want to enjoy a few days in the country learning about permaculture, self-sufficiency and a sustainable lifestyle in a hands on environment by helping us with planting, building, harvesting and general garden work then contact us at this email address...

Yarrow Ecovillage Society Coop We have bought a piece of land in Yarrow, near Chilliwack which would be good for both an organic farm with its 20 acres in ALR and putting a 25 unit ecovillage on the remaining land with retail and offices. New members are eagerly welcomed as are investors, even if they can make only a small investment, which if we are successful, offer good returns. We have regular, potlucks, meetings and work parties. Several of us will be living on site this spring if all goes well. We can put your experience, knowledge and work into good use! I find it very exciting to work with people such as Alan Carpenter (who has done Cohousing projects), Alan Dobbs (who has done developments in Chilliwack), Gerry Kilgannon (who has one of my permaculture edible landscapes in her yard at Windsong Cohousing.) text more text One group of these individuals has developed a method of self-sustained living known as permaculture . Unlike many other methods of alternative agriculture, permaculture is not simply a method of food production. It is a complete lifestyle with its own overarching set of beliefs that can be applied to every aspect of one’s life. The term "permaculture" was coined in the late 1970s by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, authors of the first permaculture manual . These philosophers of science believe that "when we left tribal life, we left with it all guides to sensible behavior in the natural world." They believe that we, as a human race, have forgotten how to "evolve self-regulating systems" and that the widespread destruction caused by our current system of agriculture is clear evidence of this. Mollison and Holmgren sought to design a method through which humans might again live within self-regulating natural systems. These men were not modern "Luddites" who desired to reject all of modern science’s technological advances and return to primitive methods of production. On the contrary, they envisioned a lifestyle in which humans would utilize all of this new scientific understanding and their own commonsense to create small systems of food production which would simulate natural ecosystems and be individually tailored to suit the situation of each household. In this type of system the primary concerns would not be mass production and economics but "people care" and "earth care." Because successful permaculture requires great inputs of knowledge of natural systems, creativity, and expertise in a number of different areas, the ideal of "people care" encourages individuals to share both their crop yield and their knowledge and talents. "People care" also encompasses the ideal that, just as an individual should care for the earth, the earth should care and provide for that individual. Each permaculture system is thus developed and personally tailored to suit the needs and desires of the individuals for which it provides.

A downloadable PDF file of this article complete with principle icon graphics and references is available here The Permaculture Design System Flower

Starting with ethics and principles focused on the critical domain of land and nature stewardship (gardening, agriculture etc) permaculture is evolving as a design system by progressive application and integration of all seven domains necessary for a sustainable culture.
From the Introduction.....................
Permaculture Principles
In Permaculture One (1978) Bill Mollison and I outlined the theory and some initial applications of permaculture design without explicitly listing a clear set of permaculture principles. The permaculture tree1 presents the concept as analogous to the germinating tree seed giving rise to interdependent root and aerial structures. The germination of the idea generates both the physical reality of holistic sustainable human support systems and the holistic conceptual framework of knowledge. In "Permaculture: A Designers Manual" (1985), Bill Mollison provided an encyclopaedic coverage of the scope and possibilities of permaculture design as well as an enlargement of the theory and design principles which underlie the applications. The chapters (2&3) which deal with these conceptual foundations are multifaceted and insightful but hardly provide a clear list of principles.

Permaculture Design Courses - Why Take One?
What is Permaculture? Permaculture is an integrated approach to design.
Permaculture is a way of arranging your life to be happy and abundant.
Permaculture is about designing sustainable human settlements.
Permaculture is essentially very practical and can be practised by anyone.
Permaculture can be applied from the smallest urban balcony to large rural properties and to a range of economic strategies and social structures. There are plenty of good books about permaculture including several excellent "How to" ones. Experience shows that those who take a course, even having read several books, gain a much deeper insight, and feel more empowered to practice the philosophy. The courses are really enjoyable, students go home energised. The landscape around them, their home environment, their sense of purpose, all have a new meaning. It’s not necessarily what participants learn on the level of facts and figures, it is more about having a wholistic world view, integrating life experiences. It can be a subtle yet profound change, which can result in shifts in many areas of one’s life. The Permaculture Design Certificate Course was developed by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holgrem some twenty years ago. Their purpose was to create a new vehicle for teaching design processes based on observation of nature, a wholistic approach. To this end a minimum of seventy two hours covers: design, patterns in nature, climate, trees, water, soils, energy cycles, earth working, strategies appropriate to the tropics, to humid and cool climates and drylands, to aquaculture, to buildings and to people structures. The course includes field trips, and hands-on experience.

Our Diverse Community of Wonderous Beings
Permaculture is the art and science of creating community ecosystems in which plants and animals interact, forming a sustainable and profitable environment. We seek to value all species present on Wild Thyme Farm, a philosophy reflected by our gardens and grounds. The challenge is to find the spot in the ecosystem in which an invasive plant can cohabitate with others. I often find myself in the gardens of Wild Thyme Farm, looking at a plant in such a thriving situation, and wondering if the plant is encouraging the community as a whole. Plants have different functions in a community. Some plants provide food, shade, groundcover, nutrients, beneficial insects, or soil aeration. (Link to species index, functions of plants, wonderful weeds, weed recipes). The strength of community aids us in selecting our animals for the farm. Joining us in our ecosystem are four cows, one piggy, twenty chickens, four guinea fowl, and a variety of wild animals in the forest. In the past, we have also had goats and ducks cohabitate the land with us. (Link to animals and their desirable characteristics). As a designer of this community of many species, I seek to provide food for all of its members. Plants are selected and planted in close proximity to the beings most likely to consume them. Plants which function as dynamic accumulators for the soil are grown throughout the farm. This provides natural fertilizer in the gardens, or food for the soil which feeds the plants. (Link to food for animals and plants, recipes for your plants to eat).

I f commercial agriculture (with its bulldozers, mono-crops, fences, pesticides, and herbicides) is rape of the Earth, and if standard organic gardening is consensual sex with the Earth, then permaculture is ecstatic tantric union with the Earth. Just ask a permaculturalist. Notice those big smiles on their faces.
Consider Penny Livingston-Stark, informally known as the Permaculture Queen, who consults, designs, and teaches worldwide on the finer points of this ecological design system from her home in Point Reyes Station. Over the past ten years, she has created "food forests," designed gardens, constructed sensuous buildings, and restored severely degraded lands, all while training some of the best practitioners in the field. A beautiful middle-aged woman with blonde hair turning silver and a no-nonsense preference for cowboy boots, Livingston beams with energy. She's got to be up to something.
Her mission is nothing less than remaking the world, one garden at a time. While the basic permaculture system is rooted in agriculture, it quickly expands to include a multitude of global issues: soil restoration, clean water, waste systems, ecoforestry, alternative energy, housing, urban food security, and local economies and that's just for starters. "Permaculture is about overall sustainability," says Livingston. The term is a contraction of "permanent culture" and its concepts originated over 20 years ago in Australia, from whence it's spread like a weed. "We're talking about 'permanence' in the dynamic sense," Livingston explains, "not necessarily keeping things the way they are right now, but the permanence of culture itself, of humanity on the Earth." This, as anyone paying attention understands, is now The Question.

Ten steps to an Organic Permaculture no-dig Garden This page was researched and produced by Anne Goddard, who lives on a 5-acre property called "Gaya'sGift" close to Bundaberg, Queensland.
Introduction
Permaculture is a method of producing foodstuff in a closed loop that maintains a self-sufficient system. In any habitat animals, plants and micro-organisms work together in harmony. Organic permaculture takes the closed loop one step further to include insects - both pest and predator. When pesticides are used against insect pests, both pest and predator are eliminated. As most insect pests breed much faster than predators in the food chain, the pests will return quicker than the predators, eventually causing havoc which will result in further applications of pesticides being necessary. The need for continual pesticide application causes the evolution of pests which are immune to pesticides and stronger and stronger applications become necessary. In an organic permaculture garden, the balance is retained. There is no need for applications of pesticides, the predator and prey are maintained in a balanced loop with plants, animals and insects. Once an organic permaculture garden is fully established the human need do nothing but add mulch, plant, water and harvest the crops as they ripen.
