Petroleum Engineering The Petroleum Engineering program at the Petroleum Institute is designed to give students a rigorous education in the fundamentals of petroleum engineering science, and specific training in applications of petroleum engineering to the production of hydrocarbon resources in the oil and gas industries. The program features two summer internships in industry where students will gain significant exposure to the petroleum processing industries in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world. The Petroleum Institute will initially offer a degree program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering. Advanced studies leading to the MS and Ph.D. degrees are planned for the future. A preliminary listing of the curriculum in Petroleum Engineering is shown on the following page. The field of Petroleum Engineering deals with the science and engineering of the production of hydrocarbon resources from the earth. Accordingly, the degree program begins with basic studies in petroleum geology, rock mechanics, and the thermodynamic properties of fluids. The program continues with advanced courses in analysis of petroleum reservoirs, well logging, drilling engineering, and reservoir engineering. A key component of the program will be student's access to a 'vision dome' facility, where three-dimensional seismic data are presented in a virtual reality format. This unique facility will greatly facilitate the students understanding of the complexities of reservoir stratigraphy and the relationships between petroleum reservoir geology and oil production.

... Research Internship for Undergraduates CPE News REU-research experience for undergraduates Open Faculty Positions in Bioengineering Fall 2002 Newsletter Welcome! The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at KU offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in both chemical and petroleum engineering. For students who desire to continue their studies, the department offers the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in either chemical or petroleum engineering as well as the undesignated Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the School of Engineering. The Chemical Engineering program offers undergraduates the opportunity to focus their studies in the environmental, biomedical, or pre-medical options as well as the standard chemical engineering curriculum. A formal curriculum is also available for students who wish to alternate academics and work experience in the Co-Op program. The undergraduate programs in chemical and petroleum engineering provide a foundation that enables a graduate to pursue a professional engineering career. For those who want a deeper academic understanding of these branches of engineering or who plan to work in research or development, graduate programs at the master's and doctoral levels are available. The department offers the M.S. degree in the fields of chemical engineering and petroleum engineering. In addition, the Ph.D. degree in the School of Engineering may be earned in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering.

Nature of the Work Employment Job Outlook Earnings ... Sources of Additional Information
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Petroleum engineers search the world for reservoirs containing oil or natural gas. Once these are discovered, petroleum engineers work with geologists and other specialists to understand the geologic formation and properties of the rock containing the reservoir, determine the drilling methods to be used, and monitor drilling and production operations. They design equipment and processes to achieve the maximum profitable recovery of oil and gas. Petroleum engineers rely heavily on computer models to simulate reservoir performance using different recovery techniques. They also use computer models for simulations of the effects of various drilling options. Because only a small proportion of oil and gas in a reservoir will flow out under natural forces, petroleum engineers develop and use various enhanced recovery methods. These include injecting water, chemicals, gases, or steam into an oil reservoir to force out more of the oil, and computer-controlled drilling or fracturing to connect a larger area of a reservoir to a single well. Because even the best techniques in use today recover only a portion of the oil and gas in a reservoir, petroleum engineers research and develop technology and methods to increase recovery and lower the cost of drilling and production operations.
