Plant Biology Science Projects.
David R. Hershey. Best Science Projects for Young Adults series. New York, N.Y. : John Wiley, 1995. Recommended grade level:
Plant Biology Science Projects , written for students age 12 and older, provides directions for 21 inexpensive seed-plant experiments. Most of the projects deal with plant physiology, plant ecology, and plant agriculture, featuring such topics as transpiration, photosynthesis, root and stem development, hydroponics, nutrient requirements, and fertilizers. Among the activities, for example, students determine how dicot seedlings are affected by the removal of cotyledons. They investigate the effect of artificial acid rain on plant growth. They also find out whether more expensive houseplant fertilizers make plants grow better. Plant Biology Science Projects gives an overview of how to approach a plant biology project. It addresses such topics as standards in plant experiments, choosing a plant for a science project, materials, record keeping, and interpreting and presenting results. Each experiment includes an introduction, statement of purpose, list of materials, procedures, expected results, explanation of results, and suggestions for further investigation. The book's 6 appendixes provide information on preparing plastic soda bottles for the activities, construction of fluorescent lighting systems, hydroponic equipment and nutrient solutions, seedlings and rooted cuttings for hydroponics, suppliers of needed materials, and outdated or inaccurate classroom plant projects to avoid.

The Arctic Ecology Laboratory (AEL) is situated in North Kedzie Hall at the Michigan State University (MSU) Campus. Directed by Dr. Patrick J. Webber, a professor in the Department of Plant Biology , the AEL conducts research on aspects of regional change in the Arctic and Alpine ecosystems. Dr. Webber and his students are currently interested in several aspects of land cover change and the laboratory's active research projects reflect this interest. Current interests include the potential responses of Arctic tundra vegetation to climate change and various human induced impact. Research efforts currently focus on the Arctic tundra of the North Slope of Alaska, although the AEL has strong circumpolar and international collaborative relationships. The AEL is maintained within the MSU Department of Plant Biology and also has close ties to the Computational Ecology and Visualization Laboratory (CEVL) in the Department of Entomology This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grants OPP9714103 and OPP9906692. featuring the Hawaiian Islands Drs. Kim Brown and
Harvey E. Ballard, Jr. About "Global Studies in Plant Biology" What is the "Global Studies" program?
"Global Studies in Plant Biology" is a new umbrella program consisting three separate courses heavily emphasizing organismal botany: a seminar introducing a particular geographic region chosen as the focus for the program during that period, an intensive international field course, and a lab research course focusing on one or more group projects. The geographic (and sometimes, topical) focus will typically change from year to year, roving about the world to spotlight different physiographic regions and their plant life. Although the focus of most upcoming "Global Studies" sequences will emphasize non-continental U.S. areas in order to internationalize the PBIO curriculum, certain future courses will target North American biomes, to acquaint students with regions outside of the contiguous United States (e.g., Island Biology in Hawaii in Summer 2003, and

Department of Plant Biology
Information about graduate programs in plant biology is available online, as well as general information about graduate study at UNH. In addition to the introductory information presented here, the department has its own home page. The Department of Plant Biology offers three baccalaureate degrees: bachelor of science in plant biology , bachelor of science in environmental horticulture , and bachelor of arts in plant biology Plant biology is the study of plants at the population, organismal, cellular, and molecular level; and the investigation of the uses of plants for food, fiber, recreational, and ornamental purposes. Offerings in marine and freshwater plant biology also are provided and are facilitated by the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory and two marine laboratories where the plant biology faculty maintains an active involvement in teaching and research. B.S. in Plant Biology
This degree is for students intending to seek employment in agricultural, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries; to work in governmental agencies, environmental groups, and consulting firms; to teach secondary education; or to undertake graduate studies in preparation for advanced research and teaching positions. Students interested in university teaching and/or research, and governmental and industrial research, should plan to complete an advanced degree in the field. B.S. in Environmental Horticulture

The Department of Botany is part of the College of Biological Science while the remaining three Departments are part of the Ontario Agriculture College
To integrate the teaching of courses across Departments, the Plant Biology Council was established. Current members of the council are Richard Reader (Botany), Mark Sears (Environmental Biology), Clarence Swanton (Plant Agriculture) and Mike Emes (Dean, College of Biological Sciences). In addition, there is an Undergraduate Curriculum committee chaired by Judith Strommer Sherry Hall , Axelrod room 306, extension 56006) for help.

Plant Biology at Utrecht University
Our society depends on plants.
Plants are the primary source for human and animal nutrition and dominate the natural landscape. Plants provide us with a breathtaking range of commodities ranging from pharmaceuticals to building materials and offer an environment for leisure and recreation. In many ways plants are essential contributors to human well-being and health. Experimental Plant Sciences studies the fundamental life processes of plants at different organizational levels, from molecules and cells to whole plants and ecosystems. The goal of these studies is to understand how plants develop and how they function in, and adapt to, continuously changing and often hostile environments.
At the Faculty of Biology of Utrecht University several research groups are studying various aspects of Plant Biology. These groups and their research are outlined.
