Welcome to Air Pollution: What’s the Solution? an educational project for students, grades 6 - 12, that uses online real time data to guide student discovery of the science behind the causes and effects of ground level ozone. Ozone is a gas that occurs both in the Earth’s upper atmosphere and at ground level. Ozone can be "good" or "bad", depending on where it is found: Good Ozone , ozone that occurs naturally in the Earth’s upper atmosphere—10 to 30 miles above the Earth’s surface—shields us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Good Ozone, or stratospheric ozone, is the type of ozone most frequently discussed in the media. Bad Ozone , is found in the Earth’s lower atmosphere, near ground level. Ground level ozone is an odorless and invisible gas that forms when pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical plants, and other sources react chemically in the presence of sunlight. The presence of ground level ozone presents a serious air quality problem in many parts of the United States. For humans and other animals, ozone is harmful when it is inhaled. Even at low levels of concentration, ozone can cause a number of respiratory effects. Through this project, students will focus on ground level ozone, discovering what ground level ozone is, what factors contribute to its formation and the health effects from breathing ozone. Students will use data and animated maps from the internet and monitor for the presence of ground level ozone. Students are challenged to think critically and creatively about the problems surrounding ground level ozone.

Homepage of IAP Indoor Air Pollution Working Group A two day conference entitled Museum Pollution : Detection and Mitigation of Carbonyls was held at Strathclyde University on the 17-18 June 1998. Over 30 delegates from the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, Canada and the US attended. Several carbonyl pollution issues were discussed and a number of actions were proposed. The initiative to have the 1998 meeting resulted in setting up a working group and the momentum that was gained has been consolidated during the following years. Since 1998, meetings have been held annually, at Instituut Collectie Nederland (1999), Oxford Brookes University (2001), and at the National Museum of Denmark (2001). During all meetings, the developments in research into indoor air pollution and conservation were discussed in an informal, yet serious, atmosphere. They are emitted by cars, buses, trucks and a variety of industrial sources including electric power plants. Toxic air pollutants include metals, other small particles, and gases. One example is the chemical benzene, which is in gasoline. Inhaling fumes that contain benzene could increase your risk of getting cancer. When Congress passed the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, it directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to take action against 188 toxic air contaminants linked to cancer and other serious health problems. In addition to benzene, examples include mercury, dioxin, asbestos, cadmium, toluene and chromium. EPA already has issued standards for more than two dozen toxic pollutants. The standards eventually will reduce toxic air emissions by a million tons per year, according to the EPA. One of the most prominent toxic problems is mercury, which accumulates in fish. Fish consumption advisories have been issued for thousands of water bodies nationwide in dozens of states. One of the biggest mercury polluters the electric power industry persuaded Congress in 1998 to forbid EPA from taking action against power plant mercury pending further study.
