W elcome to the Plasmadynamics and Electric Propulsion Laboratory (PEPL) at the University of Michigan Department of Aerospace Engineering . The lab was founded in 1992 under the direction of Associate Professor Alec Gallimore and since that time has been embarked on an experimental and theoretical program with the following goals: 1) To make electric propulsion (EP) devices more efficient and of better performance; 2) To understand spacecraft integration issues which could impede the widespread use of these devices on scientific, commercial, and military spacecraft; and 3) To identify non-propulsion applications of EP systems (e.g., plasma processing, space-plasma simulation). The centerpiece of the laboratory is the large vacuum test facility that was built in the early 1960s by the Bendix corporation and was later donated to the university in 1982. This cylindrical stainless-steel clad tank, which is 9 m long and 6 m in diameter, is the largest vacuum facility of its kind at any university in the nation. At high-vacuum, the chamber employs seven cryopumps, with a combined pumping speed of 500,000 l/s on air, and 240,000 l/s on xenon.

    Advanced Space Propulsion Laboratory
More . . . Rocket Concept Plasma Simulations Spaceflight Missions The Advanced Space Propulsion Laboratory is developing a new type of rocket technology, the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket. This plasma rocket drive is not powered by conventional chemical reactions as today’s rockets are, but by electrical energy that heats the propellant. The propellant is a plasma that reaches extreme temperatures — 50,000º and above. Some scientists call this the fourth state of matter. This new type of technology could dramatically shorten human transit times between planets (about 3 months to Mars). Not only will planetary missions be fast, but the plasma drive will propel robotic cargo missions with very large payloads (more than 100 tons to Mars). Trip times and payloads are major concerns when using conventional rockets. The laboratory was founded at NASA Johnson Space Center in December 1993. The lab director is NASA astronaut Dr. Franklin Chang-Diaz. He has been working on the development of a plasma rocket since 1979. Work began at Charles Stark Draper Laboratory then continued at the Massuchusetts Institute of Technology Plasma Fusion Center before moving to JSC.

Increasing the engine throttle level without increasing the available power caused the engine recycling in the video. The engine provides about 10 times the specific impulse (ratio of thrust to propellant used) of chemical propulsion. DS1 is the first spacecraft to use ion propulsion as the primary propulsion system. It is one of the 12 advanced technologies that was validated by DS1 during flight.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT
    ION PROPULSION
    What is ion propulsion?
Ion propulsion is a technology that involves ionizing a gas to propel a craft. Instead of a spacecraft being propelled with standard chemicals, the gas xenon (which is like neon or helium, but heavier) is given an electrical charge, or ionized. It is then electrically accelerated to a speed of about 30 km/second. When xenon ions are emitted at such high speed as exhaust from a spacecraft, they push the spacecraft in the opposite direction. What implications does this technology have for space exploration?
If DS1 shows that electric propulsion works as well as is expected, there will be many new missions that will take advantage of it. Deep Space 4 is expected to use four ion engines to fly alongside a comet in 2004 so that it can land. Ion propulsion is not of value for missions that require high acceleration, and it often will not be worthwhile for missions that can be done quickly using conventional propulsion systems (such as missions to the moon). But for a wide variety of missions with high energy requirements (such as missions to asteroids and comets, Mercury and the inner solar system, and some to the outer solar system), the low but steady acceleration of ion propulsion wins out over the less efficient bursts from chemical alternatives.
Why has NASA not used this technology before?

IRS Research Deutsche Version Electric Space Propulsion Overview
In the field of space transportation, it was recognized quite early that the propulsion abilities of the chemical rocket propulsion units are so minimal that missions which require higher propulsion can only be successfully carried out with a multiple gradation and a small portion of payload. The reason for this lies in the inferior energy capacity of the fuel whereby the maximum attainable exit speed from a rocket nozzle is limited to approximately 4 to 5 km/s One possibility of overcoming this limitation is the coupling of additional energy for example in the form of electric energy. This was already performed by Goddard in 1906 and later by Hermann Oberth in his book "The Rocket to the Planetary Spaces" Because the possibility of space travel was first made concrete with the development of large rockets after World War II, it was mainly the work of Ernst Stuhlinger which once more drew attention to the advantages of electric space propulsion, and has, since the 1960s, led an extensive worldwide research and development program. Various concepts differing extensively from one another, mainly on the basis of the acceleration mechanism, were examined because with electric energy, acceleration can occur purely thermally, electrostatically or electromagnetically. In order to achieve efficient utilization of electrostatic or electromagnetic acceleration forces, a charge carrier must first be established through the ionization of the fuel, for which there are again different starting points.

Introduction Interest in atomic energy hit full force following World War II. The scientists who had raced to produce a bomb had also developed theories for a number of possible uses for the atom. Martin Mann lists a number of them in his book, Peacetime Uses of Atomic Energy. Ideas ranged from power generation, to nuclear excavation, to nuclear propulsion for vehicles on land, sea, and in the air. There were proposals for nuclear ships, nuclear locomotives, nuclear automobiles, and nuclear aircraft. It is this last proposal that is the topic for this paper, which will examine the technical and socio-political aspects of the United States Air Force's Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion (ANP) program and associated programs, including the reasons the ANP program was undertaken, and the reasons it was canceled after a decade of work. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, aerospace engineers are devising innovative ways to take us to the stars , including light propulsion nuclear-fusion propulsion and antimatter propulsion. A new type of spacecraft that lacks any propellant is also being proposed. This type of spacecraft, which would be jolted through space by electromagnets , could take us farther than any of these other methods. Source: NASA Electromagnetic propulsion could take us to the heliopause at a speed unachievable by conventional spacecraft. When cooled to extremely low temperatures, electromagnets demonstrate an unusual behavior: For the first few nanoseconds after electricity is applied to them, they vibrate.

This system was designed to track and use lasers to shoot down missiles launched by foreign countries. While this system was designed for war , researchers have found many other uses for these high-powered lasers. In fact, lasers could one day be used to propel spacecraft into orbit and to other planets. Photo courtesy Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute An early model of a laser-propelled lightcraft To reach space, we currently use the space shuttle , which has to carry tons of fuel and have two massive rocket boosters strapped to it to lift off the ground. Lasers would allow engineers to develop lighter spacecraft that wouldn't need an onboard energy source. The lightcraft vehicle itself would act as the engine, and
