Laser Propulsion
The Special Studies Program (within ATP) has examined alternative spacecraft propulsion concepts to meet performance or mission objectives. Laser propulsion concepts have been described for several decades. The laser beam is used to heat a propellant with the energetic expansion driving the craft. A series of ATP devised tests were conducted in which a laser beam was directed at a pusher plate with machined paraboloid dimples. Light was focused by each dimple on a spot behind the plate. The focused beam heated air pockets and the expanding pockets imparted a thrust to the plate. This concept provides respectable thrust in the atmosphere. In space (vacuum) the dimpled plate is jettisoned to expose a block of solid propellant which is ablated by the laser beam to produce thrust. In NEP, an electric propulsion (EP) device electrically accelerate the exhaust propellant to very high velocity. There are significant obstacles to this approach, however. First, the thrust of the EP unit is very low, so that it, and the electric power source, must operate for a long time, i.e., months to years, to achieve the desired Delta-V. Second, the mass of the power source and thruster are relatively large, significantly increasing the launch mass for the mission. In NTP, a compact lightweight nuclear reactor heats hydrogen propellants to a high temperature, e.g., 3000 K. Because the molecular weight of hydrogen is almost a factor of 10 smaller than the molecular weight of hydrogen/oxygen combustion products, the exhaust velocity of hot hydrogen propellant is much greater than that of hydrogen/oxygen. A NTP engine can achieve a hydrogen exhaust velocity of 10 kilometers/sec. and a maximum Delta-V increase in rocket velocity of ~22 kilometers/sec. The large gain in Delta-V performance possible with nuclear thermal rockets, and the fact that they only have to operate for a short time - e.g., on the order of an hour total - to achieve the desired Delta-V, make them a very attractive candidate for high velocity space missions.

FOREWORD
The speculative "propulsion" concept described in this paper was presented at a special session of the 15th Joint AIAA/SAE/ASME Propulsion Conference (June 18-20, 1979), "Propulsion Concepts for Galactic Spacecraft". The concept was developed as the result of private, unofficial research. NASA is not involved in UFO research. However, the research which may be stimulated by this paper could result in the verification of essential elements of this concept and in feasibility studies concerning the development of a new generation of NASA spacecraft. - Alan C. ABSTRACT
A new propulsion concept has been developed based on a proposed resonance between coherent, pulsed electromagnetic wave forms and gravitational wave forms (or space-time metrics). Using this concept, a spacecraft "propulsion" system potentially capable of galactic and inter-galactic travel without prohibitive "travel times" has been designed. The "propulsion" system utilizes recent research associated with magnetic field line merging, hydromagnetic wave effects, free-electron lasers, laser generation of megagauss fields, and special structural and containment metals. Research required to determine potential, field resonance characteristics and to evaluate various aspects of the spacecraft "propulsion" design is described.

Overview
Electric propulsion is most broadly defined as the acceleration of propellants by electrical heating, electric body forces, and/or magnetic body forces. This leads to a natural division of the three forms of electric propulsion. In Electro-Thermal thrusters, the propellant gas is electrically heated and expanded through a nozzle. Common examples include resistojets and arcjets. In Electro-Static thrusters, the propellant is ionized and the resulting ions are accelerated through an electric potential. Common examples include Hall effect and Kaufmann type thrusters. Electro-Magnetic thrusters utilize electric and magnetic body forces to accelerate ions. The most common type of electromagnetic thruster is the magnetoplasmadynamic thruster, or MPD.
Research Statement
Electric propulsion technology is steadily improving as our understanding of the physics governing thruster operation increases. Efforts that combine both experimental and theoretical studies of the plasmas within electric propulsion thrusters are necessary in order to build reliable models of performance that can be then used as design tools for improved next generation thrusters.
Areas of Active Research
Arcjet Thrusters
Due to their relatively high specific impulse (500-1,200 sec.) and moderate thrust levels, electro-thermal arcjet thrusters are playing a growing role in satellite propulsion. Existing and planned applications include arcjet thrusters for station-keeping and on-orbit maneuvering. Low power hydrazine arcjets are now in use on the TelStar IV class of communication satellites and the first space test of a high power arcjet for use in orbit raising operations will be launched in 1997 under the Air Force

NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C. News Release: 2003-001 The first asteroid discovered to orbit the Sun in nearly the same path as Earth will make its closest approach to our planet this month before scurrying away for 95 years. The asteroid, named 2002 AA29, traces an unusual horseshoe pattern relative to Earth. The asteroid alternately leads and follows Earth relative to Earth. The asteroid alternately leads and follows Earth around the Sun without ever passing it. "In some ways, the Earth and this asteroid are like two racecars on a circular track," said JPL's Dr. Paul Chodas, who discovered the object's unusual motion. "Right now the asteroid is on a slightly slower track just outside Earth's, and our planet is catching up." On January 8, 2003, the tiny body will come within approximately 5.9 million kilometers (3.7 million miles) of Earth, its closest approach for almost a century. "Unlike racecars, the two bodies will not pass when they approach each other," Chodas said. "Instead, the combined gravitational effects of the Earth and Sun will nudge the asteroid onto a slightly faster track just inside Earth's, and it will begin to pull ahead." In 95 years, the asteroid will have advanced all the way around to where it is catching up to Earth from behind. A similar interaction with gravity from both Earth and the Sun will then push the asteroid back onto a slower outside track, and the pattern will repeat. To an observer moving with the Earth, the asteroid appears to trace out a horseshoe pattern.

Overview
This document is mainly devoted to showing the results of experiments in electrokinetic propulsion. For experiments of my own, I will also try to provide details of how my devices were built. The term "Electrokinetic" used with regards to propulsion in the title of this document is borrowed from US Patent Electrokinetic Apparatus , Thomas Townsend Brown, 2,949,550, August 16, 1960. In it he states: "My invention relates to electrokinetic apparatus, and more particularly to a method and apparatus for utilizing electrical potentials for the production of forces for the purpose of causing relative motion between a structure and the surrounding medium." The one common feature to all my experiments thus far is that they have involved charging surfaces using very high voltages or potentials. Please be warned. Some of these experiments involve the use of very high voltages (in the kilovolt range). When working with high voltages, always discharge the power supply and charged surfaces before going near them yourself.

John Wickman will again teach Introduction To Rocketry ES-1100 at Casper College during the Spring Semester - 2003. The students will design and build their own rocket motors and rockets. They will be flown at Wickman's launch site in Casper, Wyoming to altitudes of 4,000 ft and higher. Previous News Topics

Our company invented the rocket propulsion technology of mixing metal powders found on the moon into liquid oxygen and made it work.     The PPT experiment continued on the Earth Observing-1 spacecraft, with another successful operation on December 11. The PPT was operated for nearly 9 continuous hours, over 5 spacecraft orbits. The PPT controls the spacecraft pitch axis during these experiments, and spacecraft attitude control was nominal throughout. This operation completes the experiments for the 2002 year, with six separate tests conducted with a cumulative on-time of over 33 hours. PPT testing will occur periodically throughout the remainder of the EO-1 mission.

    MAIN PROPULSION SYSTEM
    The main propulsion system , assisted by the two solid rocket boosters during the initial phases of the ascent trajectory, provides the velocity increment from lift-off to a predetermined velocity increment before orbit insertion . The two SRBs are jettisoned after their fuel has been expended, but the MPS continues to thrust until the predetermined velocity is achieved. At that time, main engine cutoff is initiated. The external tank is jettisoned, and the orbital maneuvering system is ignited to provide the final velocity increment for orbital insertion. The magnitude of the velocity increment supplied by the OMS depends on payload weight, mission trajectory and system limitations. Coincident with the start of the OMS thrusting maneuver (which settles the MPS propellants), the remaining liquid oxygen propellant in the orbiter feed system and space shuttle main engines is dumped through the nozzles of the three SSMEs. At the same time, the remaining liquid hydrogen propellant in the orbiter feed system and SSMEs is dumped overboard through the hydrogen fill and drain valves for six seconds. Then the hydrogen inboard fill and drain valve is closed, and the hydrogen recirculation valve is opened, continuing the dump. The hydrogen flows through the engine hydrogen bleed valves to the
