The Safety Engineering and Risk Analysis Division (SERAD) was originally formed in 1991 by merging ASME's Safety Division (est. 1951) and the Risk Analysis Task Force. Its function is to stimulate interest in and disseminate risk analysis and safety information as applied to the process of mechanical engineering. Member activity has expanded to include product liability, loss prevention and occupational health.
Safety is the reduced risk achieved by successful application of engineering understanding and controls to hazards. For new products and processes, risk is identified and minimized by analysis of previous experience and conservative design.
The basic concern for human health and safety as well as the reduction in business interruptions and insurance costs makes the work of the Division increasingly important.

STUDENT SAFETY ENGINEERING DESIGN CONTEST
ASME's Safety Engineering and Risk Analysis Division (SERAD) and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsor an Annual Student Paper Contest . This contest promotes safety engineering as a field of study and encourages students to consider safety engineering as a career option. Recent entries included studies related to the fishing, agriculture, mining and chemical industries.
In addition to SERAD and NIOSH , funding for this contest is provided by The Bridgestone/Firestone Trust Fund, Factory Mutual Research, Glasgow Products and Roger Harvey, P.E., P.C.

The Safety Engineering team conducts research on the risks inherent in industrial work with a view to reducing their number or eliminating them. The members of this team evaluate risks from field studies and laboratory analyses, and look for solutions to curb these risks. They concentrate primarily on three of the Institute's priority fields of research:
  • Safety of industrial tools, machines, and processes Protective equipment Noise and vibration

Environmental, Ocean, and Risk and Safety Engineering
Research in Environmental Engineering within the MEE Department is quite diverse with on-going projects in surface water, ground water, and air quality as well as in ocean engineering, energy efficiency, and environmental risk analysis. In the area of surface water, the main emphasis is on the transport and fate of hydrophobic contaminants and includes research on the resuspension and erosion of bottom sediments, the flocculation and deposition of fine-grained sediments, the sorption of hydrophobic contaminants to these sediments, and the risk assessment and remediation of the contaminated sediments. This work includes numerical modeling, laboratory experiments, and field studies. The transfer of contaminants between surface waters and air and the subsequent transport and fate of these contaminants is also being investigated. In ground water and soil contamination, investigations are being made into the flow of water in soils where a water-air interface is present within the soil and also into the transport and fate of radioactive materials and organic chemicals in soils. Research in Ocean Engineering is focused on hydrodynamic processes relevant to engineering in the ocean and coastal environment. Current projects include research on wind wave generation, wave breaking, radar scattering from the sea surface, cable deployment, sediment transport modelling, flow over ripples and dunes, scour, and flow separation.

October 14-18, 2002
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Overview
Software plays a central role in safety-critical functions in today's complex and highly integrated systems. Software system safety, to effectively contribute to system design, development and testing, must be integrated into systems engineering, software development, and system safety engineering. In this course you will obtain the knowledge you need to implement a practical software safety effort for maximum impact on design and test activities. Find Answers to These Vital Questions
  • How do you integrate software safety into the system safety process to improve system and software design, development and test efforts?
  • How do you define what needs to be accomplished for a successful software system safety effort?
  • What are the common pitfalls and how do you avoid them?
  • How do you choose the correct tool for the task at hand?
  • How do you plan, coordinate, and direct software safety tasks based on established priorities?

Hazard-Based Safety Engineering (HBSE):
Applying Engineering Fundamentals to the Design and Analysis of Provably Safe Products Selected by an experts' panel of California Fire Chiefs Association as an important new Analytical Model and a Process for Preventing Injury and Fire! Why HBSE? As a product design/safety professional, or perhaps as a manager of your company's product engineering processes, you may have struggled at times balancing your product's safety requirements and guidelines against other important parameters, such as usability, cost, and customer satisfaction. Have you ever wondered why certain safety requirements exist, especially when they seem to impact your creativity or production schedule? Occasionally, you may propose a design not foreseen by current safety standards. Is your new design equivalently safe? What specific hazards does it anticipate? What safeguards can you incorporate to prevent those hazards from causing injury? HBSE is a process that gives you tools to answer those questions. How will this seminar help?
