Human Factors and Ergonomics Society
New book highlights ergonomics research on sound
Compilation of top-rated meeting papers can guide designers
The Ergonomics of Sound: Selections from Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meetings, 1985-2000 Edited by Ellen Haas and Judy Edworthy HFES proudly announces a new compilation of top-rated Annual Meeting proceedings papers demonstrating the critical need for a greater understanding of and appreciation for the ergonomics of sound. The editors selected 54 full papers representing the best of almost 200 meeting presentations. Papers cover 7 areas: Auditory Warnings, Spatial Audio Displays, Speech, Speech Recognition, Speech Synthesis, Noise, and Hearing Protection. Also includes 27 abstracts, a bibliography, and author and subject indexes. The book will be of interest to HF/E professionals and those working in telecommunications, computer systems, law, consumer products, health care, safety engineering, and industrial hygiene. From the introduction:
"The need for a better understanding of and appreciation for the ergonomics of sound has reached a critical level. . . . Sound-related technologies and products play an increasingly significant role in living and working environments. Automatic speech recognition and speech synthesis are used daily by millions of people in applications such as telephone directory assistance. The news media describe the hazards of increasingly noisy surroundings and the need to protect people living or working in these environments. Not only human factors/ergonomics professionals but also those in telecommunications, computer systems, law, consumer products, health care, safety engineering, and industrial hygiene would benefit from greater awareness of what the HF/E field has revealed about sound in many applications."

document.write(document.frmmenu.elements['titleaction'].value); This division conducts inspections and audits; monitors compliance with regard to crossings, bridges, track and signals; and carries out environmental assessments when required. Railway Safety Engineering reviews and analyzes accidents to identify and resolve safety issues, as well as responding to Transportation Safety Board recommendations. Railway Safety Engineering inspectors are empowered to restrict or cease the operations of an offending company or individual, and in serious cases recommend prosecution. The division also implements the Crossings Contribution Program to eliminate hazards at railway crossings. This federal program identifies risks at railway crossings and provides funding to improve safety. In addition to responding to public and industry inquiries, Railway Safety Engineering is involved in a public education program called Operation Lifesaver. This program raises railway safety awareness through presentations, which are delivered to schools, municipalities and other interested parties.

Safety Engineering Department
This department studies accident prevention and improvement of safe working conditions in industries concerned with development, utilization, and storage of natural energy and resources. Safety engineering is critical, not only for industrial progress, but also for including the time of a disaster, lifestyle improvements in a nation which imports huge quantities of natural and energy resources. Research in the Safety Engineering Department is motivated by the needs of the highly advanced, automated, and diversified modern industrial world.
Fracture Mechanics and Explosives Division
This division carries out research works mainly on subsurface safety, for example mechanical stability evaluation of rock mass using non-destructive testing technique such as acoustic emission or geo-tomography techniques, stress measurement technique using rock cores, and fundamental research on mechanical properties of rock under simulated deep underground condition. Research works are also being conducted on the safety of different type of explosive and the new application of explosives. The following subjects are presently being carried out:
  • Rock fracture mechanics study under the environment of radioactive waste disposal.
