What are Semiconductors?
Semiconductors are materials which have a conductivity between conductors (generally metals) and nonconductors or insulators (such as most ceramics). Semiconductors can be pure elements, such as silicon or germanium, or compounds such as gallium arsenide or cadmium selenide. In a process called doping, small amounts of impurities are added to pure semiconductors causing large changes in the conductivity of the material. Due to their role in the fabrication of electronic devices, semiconductors are an important part of our lives. Imagine life without electronic devices. There would be no radios, no TV's, no computers, no video games, and poor medical diagnostic equipment. Although many electronic devices could be made using vacuum tube technology, the developments in semiconductor technology during the past 50 years have made electronic devices smaller, faster, and more reliable. Think for a minute of all the encounters you have with electronic devices. How many of the following have you seen or used in the last twenty-four hours? Each has important components that have been manufactured with electronic materials. microwave oven electronic balance video games radio television VCR watch CD player stereo computer lights air conditioner calculator telephone musical greeting cards diagnostic equipment clock refrigerator car security devices stove Advances in the field of electronics can continue to improve our lives. Learning about electronic materials can help you understand and be able to participate in the fields of communication, computers, medicine, the basic sciences and engineering. All of these fields use electronics extensively.

Such a WWW-archive has a number of advantages: in particular, it enables physicists, both theoreticians and experimentalists, to rapidly retrieve the semiconducting material parameters they are interested in. In addition, physical parameters - optical, electrical, mechanical, etc. - will be presented in the framework of the electronic archive for both the known and new semiconducting compounds. As the starting point in creating the database served the voluminous reference book "Handbook Series on Semiconductor Parameters"

Semiconductors
Metal conducts electricity; rubber doesn't. Gold conducts electricity; Styrofoam doesn't. Most materials fall easily into one category or the other. Everyone knows, for example, that if you want a good wire you're going to make it out of copper, not plastic. But there's a whole group of materials that fall in between. Their conductivity is in between metals and insulators. And their conductivity can be modified transiently, by shining a light on them or injecting charges. They're known as semiconductors, and they first became interesting to physicists in the late 1920s. At first no one could figure out how they worked. Scientists once thought that certain atoms simply held onto their electrons more strongly than others. But as physicists got a better understanding of what an atom looked like, they understood what was really going on. Different kinds of atoms have different numbers of electrons swarming around them. These electrons can only sit in specific places around the atom. It's sort of like rows of seats in a theater-in-the-round: a few electrons get to sit in the first row around the stage, and when that's filled the next electrons sit in the next row and so on. Electrons in a filled row stay put just as in a theater it's harder to get out when you've got people sitting on each side of you. In an insulator, every row is completely filled. Consequently the electrons rarely move. No moving electrons means no electricity can pass through.

An Outline of a Research Strategy
Current interests include such topics as
transport and electric properties of monocrystalline and polycrystalline materials, including thin films effect of surface modification on charge carrier kinetics shallow traps in various types of semiconductors the effect of dopants on the energy and density subband gap states The main instrumental method is the Advanced Method of Transient Microwave Photoconductivity (AMTMP). This method permits simultaneous measurement of changes in a cavity resonance frequency and a quality factor after sample illumination. These changes are proportional to changes in a real and in imaginary parts of dielectric constant according to a cavity perturbation theory. Usually (but not always) conduction electrons cause a change in a material conductivity related to a change of cavity quality factor (photoconductivity). Trapped electrons cause a change in the real part of dielectric constant related to a shift of a resonance frequency (photodielectric effect). As a result, this unique registers both free and trapped electron kinetics. Intrinsic Semiconductors
If a semiconductor crystal contains no impurities, the only charge carriers present are thos produced by thermal breakdown of the covalent bonds. The conducting properties are thus characteristic of the pure semiconductor. Such a crystal is termed an intrinsic semiconductor.
    Extrinsic Semiconductors
If a semiconductor crystal contains n-type or p-type impurities, the conducting properties are chiefly due to the impurities. Such a crystal is termed an extrinsic semiconductor.
    Planar Transistor Manufacture
When a silicon wafer is heated to about 1200 degrees Celsius in an atmosphere of water vapour or oxygen a skin of silicon dioxide forms on the surface. This skin is a most effective seal against the ingress of moisture at room temperatures and has made possible the method of manufacture of planar transistors which is described below. The slice is now exposed at a high temperature to a boron-rich atmosphere. The silicon dioxide coating protects the slice against diffusion of boron except at the exposed areas and here boron diffuses isotropically, i.e. horizontally under the protective coating as well as vertically into the crystal, thus forming a p-type base region. Other more precise ways of forming such a region have been developed, for example by ion implantation. This involves a sharply defined bombardment of the substrate by a beam from an ion gun which enables the active base area to be closely controlled in area and shape, a process which can be compared with precision etching. The slice is now returned to the oxidising atmosphere and a coating of silicon dioxide is formed over the base areas (and the rest of the slice) to give a cross-section similar to that shown in (c) below.
