64. Welcome To CPNSS
The preeminent centre for the study of the philosophy of natural and social sciences in the United Kingdom.
http://cpnss.lse.ac.uk/
Welcome
The LSE became established as an international centre for methodology through the work of Karl Popper, Imre Lakatos, Lionel Robbins, James Durbin and others. Now that contemporary social, economic and political problems call for new techniques and more concerted interdisciplinary research, methodological issues have come to the fore again. The Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science was founded in 1990 to promote interdisciplinary and inter-institutional cooperation in developing methodologies that meet these modern scientific demands. A generous anonymous donation allowed it to move into its own premises in Tymes Court in 1993, renamed the Lakatos Building in November 2001. Activities Address Office Hours
Activities
  • Research projects devoted to understanding and improving contemporary scientific practice; to the integration of scientific knowledge; and to the relations among science, politics, values and technology. The projects focus on biology, social science, economics and physics. Special emphasis is placed on research that contributes to the study of practical social and engineering problems. Nine projects are in progress at present. Visits by distinguished academics from around the world to collaborate with researchers from LSE and elsewhere in Britain and to give lectures and seminars for audiences both local and national.

The social sciences deal in systematic, rational, and empirical ways with human nature, our thoughts and feelings, our behavior, our relationships with one another, and the factors that affect and influence us. They approach these subjects in a spirit of objective scientific inquiry, coupled with a humanistic concern for the human condition in general and for people as individual human beings. The social sciences are, in a sense, a link between our mental, emotional, and creative selves (which the humanities and the fine arts express) and human beings as inhabitants of the natural world (which is the domain of the natural sciences). At St. Norbert College the Division of Social Sciences includes the academic disciplines of anthropology economics geography political science ... psychology and sociology , plus professional programs in business administration and teacher education The social sciences contribute to the goals and objectives of the College in many ways. They stimulate our intellectual and personal growth by improving our understanding of our own and other ways of life; of our basic customs, and institutions; of human development; of human social relations; and of the economic, political, social, and cultural systems in which we as individuals live. They encourage the growth of community participation and responsibility by increasing our awareness that we are complex beings who exist as members of numerous communities, both small and large: family, workplace, neighborhood, fraternal or special interest groups, church, state and others.
