Have you ever wondered about the History of taxation in the US ? Click in chronological order to get the story... Did you know high inflation played a central role in convincing the colonies to accept a central government? While we're on the topic of the politics of inflation (and debt), there is an interesting discussion in Brad Delong's Semi-Daily Journal about how the neoliberal policy mix of the early 90's in Argetina might have been doomed to failure from the start.
Bill Abresch, of the Social Science Data Analysis Network sent me an email about CensusScope . Bill writes, ``CensusScope makes it easy to really explore (rather than just lookup facts) US demographic trends and to get a feel for how the different parts of the US vary.''
How are corporations governed?
. Berkeley economist Brad Delong reviews an article in the journal Foreign Affairs. Highlights: the factors influencing corporate governance in different countries are culturally determined. Changing these cultural factors are harder than it might seem. This has implications with the ``reform'' packages that the World Bank, OECD and IMF propose for some countries.

PhD students Dr. Marian May is the RSSS Adviser to PhD students. The position is new, designed to address the needs of PhD students in RSSS. Marian has worked with graduate students on campus since the 1980s. Her previous work has focused on developing skills in writing and presenting academic work in theses, research papers and the range of academic seminars. Particular areas of concern for her are working with international students, students juggling multiple strands of their lives, and students tackling research that crosses established disciplinary boundaries. Marian is working both with individual students and in groups and workshops to develop academic resources and relationships. Marian completed her PhD in Demography, RSSS, on an ANU Re-entry Scholarship for Women, graduating in October 2002: "The memory of the ups and downs of my PhD is persistently vivid! Juggling full-time research, part-time work, household and blended family responsibilities is never easy. It is a difficult enough process without the pressures of work and family. Yet doing a PhD in the Research School of Social Sciences is a wonderful opportunity. I see this job as using my previous work and PhD experience to benefit other PhD students." About the priorities in her job Marian says: "My aim is to ensure students have access to the significant resources available in RSSS and the support they need to get their thesis finished! "

Program Scope
The Labor Studies Program attracts students interested in how our lives are shaped by work and its results. Starting from the practical problems of work, workers and their organizations, labor students investigate the underlying economic, political, and cultural forces. Drawing on the full range of social science and other disciplines, students develop practical and analytical skills needed in working with labor, government, and other organizations in the labor field. Labor Studies courses combine broad perspectives with specific skills. Introductory courses provide a general knowledge about work, workers, and their organizations. Electives enable students to examine areas in greater depth. Individual and group research projects encourage students to develop skills through investigation of specific problems such as: obstacles to organizing among immigrant workers; labor management cooperation's impact on grievance-handling and collective bargaining; use of computer information systems in local union operations; corporate buyouts' effects on workers' job security; pressure of international competition on working and living standards domestically and abroad; and child care provision through union activity. In these and other problems, students are encouraged to do first-hand investigation by working directly with those involved.
