Lichens are a successful alliance between a fungus and an alga. Each doing what it does best, and thriving as a result of a natural cooperation. TAXONOMY - The science of naming things is called taxonomy. Taxonomy classification introduction and tutorial: Excerpts highlighted in yellow from: " Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2000

Taxonomy , science of classifying organisms. Probably the first scientific study of plants was the attempt to classify them. At first, because of the limited knowledge of plant structures, artificial classifications, beginning with the most ancient one into herbs, shrubs, and trees, were necessary. These simple categories merely cataloged, in a tentative way, the rapidly accumulating material, in preparation for a classification based on natural relationships. Modern taxonomic classification, based on the natural concepts and system of the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus , has progressed steadily since the 18th century, modified by advances in knowledge of morphology, evolution, and genetics.

The Order Passeriformes (passerines) are the songbirds and comprise over 50 percent of the world's bird species Their anatomy, physiology and behavior distinguish them from all the other orders of birds. Their most distinguishing characteristics are their specialized leg structure and the vocal structures and brain wiring which allow them to produce complex songs. The non-passerines comprise the other 28 out of the 29 orders of birds of the world.

    http://www.tcse.org/revengr/taxonomy.html
The many conflicting uses of terms like reverse engineering, reengineering, restructuring, and design recovery in conference papers and vendor presentations used to contribute to confusion. To straighten out the definition of these terms, the Taxonomy Project of the IEEE-CS Technical Council on Software Engineering (TCSE) - Committee on Reverse Engineering has developed a unified taxonomy of the field. That taxonomy, published in IEEE Software in 1990 and now widely cited and quoted, provides these definitions:
    Forward engineering
    - "the traditional process of moving from high-level abstractions and logical, implementation-independent designs to the physical implementation of a system."
    Reverse engineering
    - "the process of analyzing a subject system with two goals in mind:
    (1) to identify the system's components and their interrelationships; and,
    (2) to create representations of the system in another form or at a higher level of abstraction."
    Reengineering
    - "the examination of a subject system to reconstitute it in a new form and the subsequent implementation of the new form."

Taxonomy, the study of how to organize organisms, is a constantly evolving science. Thus, there are many branches, but there isn't too much about it on the web. Of what there is, it's all pretty specific, but we hope it's helpful.
TreeBASE Home Page - A searchable data base of Phylogenetic Knowledge. Seach by Taxon name, Taxa tree or Bibliography. Phylogenetics Databases and Information - Links to general, Molecular and Taxonomic databases, but we have the best ones listed here already! SEQNET - The SEQNET central node at Daresbury offers access to all major molecular biology sequence and structure databases and programs for UK academics. Wow! The List of Bacterial Names with Standing in Nomenclature is a searchable database. It includes, alphabetically and chronologically, the official nomenclature of bacteria and the nomenclatural changes as cited in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names, or published, or validated in the International Journalof Systematic Bacteriology. It is extensively annotated to clarify the Rules which govern the scientific nomenclature. HICLAS - Short for Hierarchical Classification System, this taxonomic database system under development at Michigan State University allows the user to display and browse taxonomic and phylogenetic information for a particular group. Neat!

    Brian Meek
    King's College London

b.meek@hazel.cc.kcl.ac.uk [Note added in 1996: now brian.meek@kcl.ac.uk Introduction This is the second article based on language-independent standardisation work being carried out by international standards working group ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22 WG11 (Language Bindings). The first, Programming languages - towards greater commonality [Meek 1994] was an overview, which briefly described the various and the relationships between them. This article goes into one of these projects in greater detail. Both articles are based on presentations to the DECUS (UK and Ireland) symposia, this one given in May 1994. A third article, What is a procedure call? , based on a similar presentation in 1993 [Meek 1993], is projected. What exactly is a datatype? It is surprisingly difficult to get people to agree on what constitutes a "datatype". Most have a clear idea of what a datatype is - an idea, anyway - but as with many things in this field - like what a procedure call is, discussed in the projected third paper - they are often not the same idea.
