    What are Obstetric Ultrasound Scans?
Obstetric Ultrasound is the use of ultrasound scans in pregnancy. Since its introduction in the late 1950’s ultrasonography has become a very useful diagnostic tool in Obstetrics. Currently used equipments are known as real-time scanners, with which a continous picture of the moving fetus can be depicted on a monitor screen. Very high frequency sound waves of between 3.5 to 7.0 megahertz (i.e. 3.5 to 7 million cycles per second) are generally used for this purpose. They are emitted from a transducer which is placed in contact with the maternal abdomen, and is moved to "look at" (likened to a light shined from a torch) any particular content of the uterus. Repetitive arrays of ultrasound beams scan the fetus in thin slices and are reflected back onto the same transducer. The information obtained from different reflections are recomposed back into a picture on the monitor screen (a sonogram, or ultrasonogram). Movements such as fetal heart beat and malformations in the feus can be assessed and measurements can be made accurately on the images displayed on the screen. Such measurements form the cornerstone in the assessment of gestational age, size and growth in the fetus.

Ultrasound - we cannot hear it, but we can use it to image objects concealed from the eye. It has been used since early this century in medical, geological and oceanographical applications. Three-dimensional ultrasound as a concept has existed since the 50s, better known as ultrasound holography. Ultrasound has been used in medicine since the Second World War and is recognised as a non-invasive, non-radiative, real-time and inexpensive imaging modality. For these reasons, and with the advent of three-dimensional medical imaging, there has been a renewed interest in ultrasound and three-dimensional ultrasound in particular. This resource aims to collect all publicly available information on three-dimensional ultrasound and make it available to everybody. Although the majority of research has been into medical uses of three-dimensional ultrasound (such is my own interest as well), I would like these pages to contain information from all disciplines since the very nature of this area is multidisciplinary. Please email to me anything that you find missing from these pages.
Due to the growing size of available information I've divided this resource into the following areas:
    • Research institutions involved in 3D ultrasound
    • Medical professionals using 3D ultrasound technology
    • Publications on 3D ultrasound
    • Commercial institutions offering 3D ultrasound technology

    http://www.sru.org/exams/
Ultrasound Exams This page is for you if you are curious about what an ultrasound procedure is like. You or a loved one may have had an ultrasound procedure prescribed by your physician. When you call to schedule your procedure, the radiologist, an M.D. specializing in diagnosis or one of his co-workers may talk to you on the telephone to answer any questions. Because there are many different types of ultrasound tests, there are different ways to prepare. The radiologist probably has your previous x-ray and imaging studies to review with your ultrasound examination, but sometimes the radiologist will call your doctor to find out more clinical information about you. The examination itself may be performed by a trained ultrasound technologist, by the radiologist or both. Because interpreting images is their medical specialty, unlike most other specialists, radiologists have special training in the technology and techniques of ultrasound to get the best examinations. They also can bring together all the available clinical and radiological information to come to a quick and correct diagnosis. We have separated ultrasound procedures into the most commonly prescibed categories and have given each of these their own page. To assist you in deciding where to look, the different types of ultrasound and the kinds of things they are used for are described below. A more complete description and pictures are included on the linked pages on this website.

he term SONAR refers to Sound Navigation and Ranging . As early as Daniel Colladen , a Swiss physicist, had used an underwater bell in an attempt to calculate the speed of sound in the waters of Lake Geneva. Other early attempts at mapping the ocean-floor basing on simple echo-sounding methods were nevertheless unrewarding. Lord Rayleigh in England published in the famous treatise " The Theory of Sound " in which the fundamental physics of sound vibrations (waves), transmission and refraction were clearly delineated. The breakthrough in echo-sounding techniques came when the piezo-electric effect in certain crystals was discovered by Pierre Curie and his brother Jacques Curie in France in They observed that an electric potential would be produced when mechanical pressure was exerted on a quartz crystal such as the Rochelle salt (sodium potassium tartrate tetrahydrate) and conversely, the application of an electric charge would produce deformation in the crystal and causing it to vibrate. It was then possible for the generation and reception of 'ultra'-sounds that are in the frequency range of millions of cycles per second (megahertz) which could be employed in echo sounding devices. Much research and development in piezo-electricity followed.
