What is an onsite wastewater treatment/disposal system?
An onsite wastewater treatment/disposal system is the means by which an individual home or a cluster of homes cleans and disposes of it's wastewater. Usually this is known as a septic system. A conventional system is composed of a septic tank for pretreatment and a drainfield used for disposal of the wastewater. Each system, however, must be designed according to specific site conditions to ensure proper treatment.
Do I need an onsite wastewater treatment system?
You will need to consider an onsite wastewater treatment/disposal system if you live outside the reach of a centralized wastewater system. However, as the City of Austin continues to expand further into the hill country, the costs for centralized wastewater collection and treatment systems tends to increase. Thus, the need to consider either individual or cluster-type onsite treatment and disposal systems becomes evident.

LYNN HISTORY Wastewater collection began in Lynn in 1866 with the construction of a stone and brick sewer in Union street. By 1879, the Lynn City Engineer reported that all but 7.5 miles of major streets had been sewered. In the 1880's and early 1890's, many of the larger sewer mains were constructed including the Eastern and Western Interceptors along with several of the submains. During that decade, the number of connections rose from 1,005 to 1,988. The system has continued to expand and there are 140 miles of pipe. The Eastern interceptor is approximately 1,000 feet long and ranges in size from 40 inches by 54 inches to 64 inches by 72 inches. It is an egg shaped brick sewer constructed in 1885-1887. The Eastern Interceptor has not needed major renovation. A section of the interceptor was built in 1979 when the primary treatment plant was being built. The Western interceptor is approximately 10,400 feet long and ranges in size from 36 inches in diameter to 54 inches by 72 inches. It is egg shaped in some sections and circular in others, and was constructed in 1890-1891. The 65 million dollar primary treatment plant went on-line in 1985. The 53.8 million dollar secondary treatment went on line september 1990.

The lack of suitable water used for drinking, agriculture, farming, etc. has declined through the years. With a shortage of water throughout the world, proper methods of treating and recycling water is the key goal in sustaining our limited water resource supply. Geographically speaking, the wastewater pollution within China has affected the environment, society, and agriculture. The water pollution crisis in China has brought up an issue of efficient wastewater treatment methods to help alleviate their problems. Throughout this paper, we will discuss the topics on the effects of wastewater pollution towards the environment and the society (health factors, agriculture, economic impacts, etc). At the same time, proposals for wastewater treatment procedures and facilities to help the water crisis in China will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The lack of clean water has always been an issue of environmental concern all over the world. This environmental issue is mainly stressed in developing countries today. The main sources of water pollution are: industrial (chemical, organic, and thermal wastes), municipal (largely sewage consisting of human wastes, other organic wastes, and detergents), and agricultural (animal wastes, pesticides, and fertilizers) (Brower et.al, 1990). For the past several years, China has been affected with the water pollution crisis. Three examples of wastewater pollution crisis in China are the City of Tianjin, the Chao Lakes and Xian City.

Operator Certification Program
Florida Statutes require anyone who operates a drinking water treatment plant or a domestic wastewater treatment plant in Florida to be licensed by the DEP. To qualify for licensure an applicant must meet minimum educational and work experience requirements for each class of license. A passing score on the exam for the type and level license desired by the applicant must also be obtained. The details of these criteria are provided in the operator certification rule 62-602, Florida Administrative Code. The basic fees required for licensure are listed in the table shown below. Examinations are conducted semiannually with the application deadline being 90 days prior to the exam date. See the handbook link below for dates and locations. For more information on examinations and licensure, or to obtain copies of any of the forms, select the Operator Certification Handbook link (below). Karen Mancl Sewage is the wastewater released by residences, businesses and industries in a community. It is 99.94 percent water, with only 0.06 percent of the wastewater dissolved and suspended solid material. The cloudiness of sewage is caused by suspended particles which in untreated sewage ranges from 100 to 350 mg/l. A measure of the strength of the wastewater is biochemical oxygen demand, or BOD . The BOD measures the amount of oxygen microorganisms require in five days to break down sewage. Untreated sewage has a BOD ranging from 100 mg/l to 300 mg/l. Pathogens or disease-causing organisms are present in sewage. Coliform bacteria are used as an indicator of disease-causing organisms. Sewage also contains nutrients (such as ammonia and phosphorus), minerals, and metals. Ammonia can range from 12 to 50 mg/l and phosphorus can range from 6 to 20 mg/l in untreated sewage. Sewage treatment is a multi-stage process to renovate wastewater before it reenters a body of water, is applied to the land or is reused. The goal is to reduce or remove organic matter, solids, nutrients, disease-causing organisms and other pollutants from wastewater. Each receiving body of water has limits to the amount of pollutants it can receive without degradation. Therefore, each sewage treatment plant must hold a permit listing the allowable levels of BOD

Duckweed is a family of floating aquatic plants with the scientific name Lemnaceae . The Lemnaceae are monocots (like grasses and palms) and
are divided into 5 genera: Lemna Spirodela Wolffia Landoltia and Wolffiella . Of these 5 genera Spirodela is the largest and Wolffiella is the smallest. Duckweed normally reproduces by budding (a form of asexual reproduction) although it is capable of sexual reproduction as well. Duckweed may be the most promising plant for the twenty-first century for the following reasons
Duckweed produces more protein per square meter than soybeans.

Duckweed can be used to feed fish shrimp poultry and cattle.
Duckweed can purify and concentrate nutrients from wastewater (sewage effluent).

Duckweed provides food for wildlife, especially waterfowl.
My research with duckweed focused
on 2 questions:
1. Competition between 3 duckweed genera ( Lemna Wolffia and Landoltia
2. The effect of grazing on the outcome of this competition This research was done for my Ph.D

Welcome to the On-Site Wastewater Reasearch Program Information page. CWRS has been active in on-site research since 1981. Installation of on-site systems in Nova Scotia is a significant industry. Currently some 5,000 applications for approval to install on-site systems are made annually in Nova Scotia. The majority of these applications are for individual houses, but they also include other establishments, such as schools, campgrounds, apartment buildings, industrial developments, and mobile home parks. The annual capital cost of these on-site systems probably exceeds $10 million, and they represent an essential component of a total building cost in excess of $250 million per year. Properly operating on-site systems can provide significant cost savings in comparison with central services. A typical on-site system in Nova Scotia costs $3,500, compared with an average cost in excess of $15,000 per connection to install central services. Operating costs of on-site systems are also lower than for central systems. The use of on-site sewage disposal systems to serve exisiting and future developments will continue for the foreseeable future. Development of improved systems , based on utilization of state of the art materials and research results that provide a better understanding of the functioning of on-site systems , and their environmental and health impact, will insure that the immense investment can be protected and enhanced.
