Rudimentary parental care, where young are left in a nest, and moms only visit for very brief suckling bouts (approx 1 hr total over one month). However, young are retained in adult territories.
Only real oddball is the pen-tailed tree shrew (Ptilocercus), which is nocturnal, and uses long tail with terminal fluff to balance while climbing and hopping on ground. Order Dermoptera, Family Cynocephalidae. The Colugos or Flying Lemurs. photo-1 photo-2 photo-3
Outgroup to Primates. 2spp of Cynocephalus in SE asia
Expert Gliders- have gliding membrane starting at neck (no other mammal has this). May glide 70m or more.
When on trees, will cling vertically to trunk or hang sloth-like from branches. Supposedly excretes by hanging from limb and everting flight membrane to keep it out of the way.
One offspring, flight membrane used as pouch while at rest (infant clings to mom during gliding).
