http://www.geocities.com/dbensen2/Spec/Xenarthra.html
XENARTHRA Xenarthrans (also called endentates) are a strange group of mammals that split off the main eutherian line quite early in their evolution. Indeed, in RL, Xenarthra and Pholidota, with their oddly-articulated vertebrae and teeth, form sister taxa to all the rest of Eutheria. In Specworld, more distant eutherian outlyers exsist, but xenarthra is still rather beyond the mammalian pale. Xenarthrans probably evolved in North America, but by the Eocene, they lived in North America, South America, and Europe. During the long Eocene, the European and North American xenarthrans went extinct (the continent was only re-colonized in the Pliocene from South America). However, the xenarthrans in South America flourished during the Oligocene and Miocene. Although these creatures did not radiate into arboreal insectivore niches as in RL (these niches already having been taken by the didelphids), they became quite succsessful as insectivorous burrowers. INSECTIPHAGIDAE
Spec's "ant-eaters" form the dominant small insectivores of South America, and are clearly xenarthrans, possessing the clade's slow-growing, enamel-less teeth and xenarthrual articulation between their vertebrae (although insectiphags' backs are more flexible than other xenarthrans. However, these hedge-hog like creatures are not true myrmecophagids, but a more generalized family that often mimics the pholidotes (pangolins) of RL.

    DASYPODIDAE
The most diverse group of xenarthrans, armadilloes are small generalist/insectivores that range from central South America to southern North America. Many species (though not all) are covered with an articulating armor of flattened plates. All armadilloes are burrowers.

XENARTHRA
This order consists of 4 living families in three Infraorders: Pilosa (two kinds of sloths), Vermilingua (anteaters) and Cingulata (armadillos). Although formerly designated as an order, Edentata, signifying "toothless", only the anteaters lack teeth. The armadillos are terrestrial to fossorial, have forepaws and claws designed for digging, and have a carapace over much of their body, which protects them when they roll into a ball when threatened. They feed primarily upon insects and larvae, but may eat carrion, small vertebrates, eggs, berries and other plant material. All the anteaters have long rostra, very small mouths and long tongues. The claws on their front paws are long and capable of tearing apart termite mounds. The giant anteater is terrestrial, whereas the Tamandua and Cyclopes are both terrestrial and arboreal. The tree sloths are arboreal with long limbs, syndactylous toes and large curved claws, with which they locomote and hang suspended from trees. They are vegetarian, and have teeth that are cylindrical and evergrowing
