English theologian and mathematician who was the first to use probability inductively and who established a mathematical basis for probability inference (a means of calculating, from the frequency with which an event has occurred in prior trials, the probability that it will occur in future trials).
Bayes set down his findings on probability in "Essay Towards Solving a Problem in the Doctrine of Chances" (1763), published posthumously. That work became the basis of a statistical technique, now called Bayesian estimation, for calculating the probability of the validity of a proposition on the basis of a prior estimate of its probability and new relevant evidence. Disadvantages of the methodpointed out by later statisticiansinclude the different ways of assigning prior distributions of parameters and the possible sensitivity of conclusions to the choice of distributions.
The only works Bayes is known to have published in his lifetime are Divine Benevolence, or an Attempt to Prove That the Principal End of the Divine Providence and Government Is the Happiness of His Creatures (1731) and An Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions, and a Defence of the Mathematicians Against the Objections of the Author of The Analyst (1736), which countered the attacks by Bishop George Berkeley on the logical foundations of

De toepassingen strekken echter veel verder, zoals de eerste zin uit het voorwoord van de eerste druk van het gebruikte boek (zie beneden) weergeeft: Finite mathematics has in recent years become an integral part of the mathematical background necessary for such diverse fields as biology, chemistry, economics, psychology, sociology, education, political sciences, business and engineering.

Bayes Theorem
"This is Bayes' Theorem. It is named after Rev. Thomas Bayes, an 18th century mathematician who derived a special case of this theorem. Bayes' calculations [2] were published in 1763, two years after his death. Exactly what Bayes intended to do with the calculation, if anything, still remains a mystery today. However, this theorem, as generalized by Laplace [3], is the basic starting point for inference problems using probability theory as logic." [1]

Thomas Bayes, known as an English probabilist, mathematician, and minister, was born to his parents Joshua, an ordained Nonconformist minister, and Ann. He was the oldest of six siblings. Historians know little of Thomas Bayes’ life as a child and young adult, but know he received a license for ministry in Edinburgh and assisted his father. Other than his ministry, Bayes was credited with writing an anonymous paper supporting Isaac Newton’s work on fluxions, which was attacked by George Berkeley in a paper called The Analyst: Or a Discourse addressed to an Infidel Mathematician This work was a major factor that may have helped secure his election to the Royal Society. The Royal Society felt he had demonstrated a vast understanding and knowledge of geometry, mathematics, and philosophy. After Bayes’ death in 1761, a family friend, Reverend Richard Price, found another mathematical work written by Bayes, which supported Bayes’ understanding of probability.

COURSE OUTLINE 3 N Bayesian Methods for Social Science Data Analysis Prof.Charles Franklin, University of Wisconsin, Madison, franklin@polisci.wisc.edu 5 – 16 August 2002 (two week course / 35 hrs) This course introduces Bayesian methods for data analysis in the social sciences. Bayesian methods provide a flexible and powerful approach to complex statistical models and have a theoretical elegance and clarity that is impressive. Bayesian models inherently recognize and incorporate subjective judgments of the researcher, which is the source of both their great power the controversy surrounding their use. We will discuss some of the epistemological issues raised by Bayesian methods as well as their application. We will cover the basic concepts of Bayesian statistical inference. There are several sets of tools needed to do applied Bayesian modeling. First we need to review some probability theory. Second, we will develop the fundamental notion of Bayes theorem as a foundation for statistical inference. We'll also see how likelihood is incorporated within the Bayesian framework. Finally, we'll explore the world of applied Bayesian modeling. This will include learning some new software tools using WinBugs and S-Plus/R The main focus of the course will be application of Bayesian models to cutting edge issues in social science modeling. This will include a number of applied readings. We'll take time to discuss these applications in class in order to develop a feel for what research that takes a Bayesian approach “feels” like.
