Towards the end of the nineteenth century several puzzling facts (which eventually led to quantum theory), triggered a reaction against 'materialist' science, and some people even questioned whether atoms exist. Boltzmann, whose work was based on the concept of atoms, found himself cast as their chief defender and the debates became increasingly bitter. Always prone to bouts of depression, Boltzmann came to believe that his life's work had been rejected by the scientific community, although this was far from being true. In 1906, he committed suicide. If despair over rejection, or frustration over being unable to prove his point, were contributing factors the irony would be great indeed. Soon after Boltzmann's death, clinching evidence was found for atoms, and few would ever doubt their existence again.

Ludwig Boltzmann Ludwig Eduard Boltzmann was born on February 20, 1844 in a house on the main street of the Landstrasse district of Vienna, the son of an "Imperial and Royal Cameral-Concipist," a tax official. His grandfather, who had moved to Vienna fro m Berlin, was a clock manufacture. Lugwig’s mother, Katharina Pauernfeind, came form Salzburg. At Vienna Boltzmann taught not only physics but in 1903 he also committed himself to teach a university course "Methods and General Theory of the Natural Sciences," in which he lectured three hours every week on problems of philosophy. T hus he became a kind of successor to Ernst Mach, who held the chair for "History and Theory of the Inductive Sciences" but who had been forced to retire prematurely in 1901 after a stroke. Boltzmann, Ludwig Eduard Boltzmann, Ludwig Eduard (szül. 1844. febr. 20. Bécs - megh. 1906. szept. 5. Duino, Olaszország), fizikus, legnagyobb eredményeit a statisztikus mechanika kidolgozásában érte el. A statisztikus mechanika megmagyarázza és elôrejelzi, hogyan határozzák meg az atomok tulajdonságai (mint a tömeg, töltés és szerkezet) az anyag látható tulajdonságait (mint a viszkozitás, hôvezetés és diffúzió). 1866-ban a Bécsi Egyetemen doktorált, majd matematika- és fizikaprofesszor volt Bécsben, Grazban, Münchenben és Lipcsében. A kontinensen az elsô tudósok közé tartozott, akik felismerték a skót James Clerk Maxwell által javasolt elektromágneses elmélet jelentôségét. Statisztikus mechanikai munkáját erôsen támadták és sokáig félrertették, következtetéseit végül a kevéssel 1900 elôtt kezdôdô atomfizikai felfedezések támasztották alá, valamint az a felismerés, hogy az olyan fluktuációs jelenségek, mint a Brown-mozgás (a folyadékban lebegô mikroszkópikus részecskék véletlen mozgása), csak a statisztikus mechanika alapján magyarázhatók meg. 1866: A Bécsi Egyetemen doktorátust szerez a kinetikus gázelmélet témakörében, Josef Stefannál. Boltzmann, Ludwig (1844-1906), österreichischer Physiker, der als Begründer der klassischen statistischen Physik gilt und bedeutende Arbeiten in der Grundlagenphysik leistete. Boltzmann wurde am 20. April 1844 in Wien geboren. Er studierte an mehreren Universitäten Physik, bevor er 1866 in Wien promovierte. Ein Jahr später habilitierte er ebenfalls an der Wiener Universität und wurde danach Assistent von Josef Stefan, der zu den bedeutenden Physikern des 19. Jahrhunderts zählt. Damals publizierte Boltzmann seine ersten Arbeiten und man wurde auf ihn aufmerksam. Aus der Zeit von 1876 bis 1889 stammen seine wohl bedeutendsten Werke, die ihn weltweit bekannt machten. 1894 wurde er Nachfolger des verstorbenen Josef Stefan und blieb bis an sein Lebensende in Wien tätig. Er beschäftigte sich unter anderem mit der statischen Mechanik, der Thermodynamik und atomistische Theorie der Materie. Boltzmanns Ergebnisse wurden jedoch von damaligen Wissenschaftlern vehement angegriffen. Dies war vielleicht der Grund für seine Depressionen, die am 5. September 1906 zu seinem Selbstmord in Duino (bei Triest) führten. Zurück
