William Hamilton (1788-1856) Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to that part of this article)
Life and Writings Edinburgh Review in 1829. In 1836 he was elected to the chair of logic and metaphysics in the University of Edinburgh, and held the position till his death. In 1843 he contributed to the lively ecclesiastical controversy of the time by publishing a pamphlet against the principle of non-intrusion. He was answered by William Cunningham. In July, 1844, he suffered a stroke of paralysis, which made him practically an invalid for the rest of his life. Hamilton's principal works are: Discussions on Philosophy and Literature, Education and University Reform (London, 1852), containing his articles published in the Edinburgh Review Notes and Dissertations , published with his edition of T. Reid's Works (2 vols., Edinburgh, 1846-63); and his Lectures on Metaphysics and Logic (ed. H. L. Mansel and J. Veitch, 4 vols., 1859-60), of which an abridgment of the metaphysical portion (vols. i. and ii.) was edited by F. Bowen (Boston, 1870).

Philosophy Views Hamilton was an exponent of the Scottish common-sense philosophy and a conspicuous defender and expounder of Thomas Reid, though under the influence of Kant he went beyond the traditions of the common-sense school, combining with a naive realism a theory of the relativity of knowledge. His psychology, while marking an advance on the work of Reid and Stewart, was of the " faculty " variety and has now been largely superseded by other views. His contribution to logic was the now well-known theory of the quantification of the predicate, by which he became the forerunner of the present algebraic school of logicians.

HAMILTON, WILLIAM
HAMILTON, WILLIAM (1704—1754), Scottish poet, the author of “The Braes of Yarrow,” was born in 1704 at Bangour in Linlithgowshire, the son of James Hamilton of Bangour, a member of the Scottish bar. As early as 1724 we find him contributing to Allan Ramsay’s Tea Table Miscellany. In 1745 Hamilton joined the cause of Prince Charles, and though it is doubtful whether he actually bore arms, he’ celebrated the battle of Prestonpans in verse. After the disaster of Culloden he lurked for several months in the Highlands and escaped to France; but in 1749 the influence of his friends procured him permission to return to Scotland, and in the following year he obtained possession of the family estate of Bangour. The state of his health compelled him, however, to live abroad, and he died at Lyons on the 25th of March 1754. He was buried in the Abbey Church of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh. He was twice married— “into families of distinction “ says the preface of the authorized edition of his poems. Hamilton left behind him a considerable number of poems, none of them except “The Braesof Yarrow” of striking originality. The collection is composed of odes, epitaphs, short pieces of translation, songs, and occasional verses. The longest is “Contemplation, or the Triumph of Love” (about 500 lines). The first edition was published without his permission by Foulis (Glasgow, 1748), and introduced by a preface from the pen of Adam Smith. Another edition with corrections by himself was brought out by his friends in 1760, and to,this was prefixed a portrait engraved by Robert Strange.

William Rowan Hamilton 's father, Archibald Hamilton, did not have time to teach William as he was often away in England pursuing legal business. Archibald Hamilton had not had a university education and it is thought that Hamilton's genius came from his mother, Sarah Hutton. By the age of five, William had already learned Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. He was taught these subjects by his uncle, the Rev James Hamilton, who William lived with in Trim for many years. James was a fine teacher. William soon mastered additional languages but a turning point came in his life at the age of 12 when he met the American Zerah Colburn. Colburn could perform amazing mental arithmetical feats and Hamilton joined in competitions of arithmetical ability with him. It appears that losing to Colburn sparked Hamilton's interest in mathematics. Hamilton's introduction to mathematics came at the age of 13 when he studied Clairaut 's Algebra

William Hamilton was educated at Edinburgh and Oxford but, due to the unpopularity of Scots at Oxford, he did not receive a fellowship and returned to Edinburgh. He became the 9th Baronet after a law suit in 1861. In 1821 Hamilton was appointed professor of civil history at Edinburgh University, where, in 1836, he became professor of logic and metaphysics . Hamilton was one of the first in a series of British logicians to create the algebra of logic and introduced the 'quantification of the predicate'. Boole De Morgan and Venn followed him. However Hamilton helped begin this development and his work, although not of great depth, influenced Boole to produce a much more sophisticated system. Hamilton stimulated an interest in metaphysics and introduced Kant and other German philosophers to the British public. Hamilton, William Rowan (1805-1865)

Irish mathematician who was born at midnight on August 3/4, 1805, so there is some confusion over his birthdate. As a child, his linguist uncle James taught him 14 languages (Bell 1986, p. 341). Hamilton taught himself mathematics at age 17, and discovered an error in Laplace's Celestial Mechanics. He predicted conical refraction in biaxial crystals, which was soon experimentally observed by Lloyd. Hamilton also extended the least action principle described earlier by Maupertuis Hamilton developed the mathematical theory of quaternions which is an anticommutative algebra. Anticommutative algebra was later found to have important applications to quantum mechanics The idea for quaternions occurred to Hamilton while be was walking along the Royal Canal on his way to a meeting of the Irish Academy, and was so pleased with his discovery that he scratched the fundamental formula of quaternion algebra,

Hamilton, William Rowan (18051865) Hamilton was an Irishman and excelled at languages and mathematics at a young age. He read Euclid , Clairaut, Laplace , and Newton He went to Trinity College, Dublin, and studied both mathematics and literature. He was selected as professor of astronomy at Trinity while he was still an undergraduate. He created a new system of algebra for the complex numbers along with contributing several fundamental results in vector analysis. We owe the word vector to Hamilton. He also worked on problems in light refraction and reflection and optics. He tried to extend his complex number work and eventually developed a four -dimensional mathematical structure called a quaternion. Hamilton thought quaternions would become as important as calculus , but that did not happen. However, this work did contribute to the development of matrix algebra, vector analysis, and even some graph theory. His colleagues considered him a genial man of exceptional intellect with broad interests. Quotation: "Space and time are intimately intertwined and indissolubly connected with each other."

First edition containing Adam Smith's first published work - the Preface to these poems. William Hamilton of Bangour (1704-1754) was a Jacobite poet-laureate who, because of his Jacobite activities, was in exile from 1747 until his pardon in 1750. The publication of this edition was arranged in his absence by a group of his Scottish friends. Adam Smith was asked, possibly by Kames, to provide an unsigned preface for this octavo volume. "Hamilton's poetry reflected a broad range of literary culture, from an imitation ballad in Scots... to 'imitations' or free adaptations of Pindar, Anacreon, Sophocles, Virgil, Horace, Shakespeare, and Racine, and the first rendering into English blank verse of a passage from Homer".

A child prodigy, he had mastered 13 languages by the age of 13 and was still an undergraduate when he became professor of astronomy at the Univ. of Dublin (1827). Hamilton was one of the most original and creative mathematicians of his time. In his Theory of Systems of Rays (1828) he predicted the existence of conical refraction (later confirmed experimentally by H. Lloyd) and unified the field of optics under the principle of varying action, which he later extended to dynamics and which has become of fundamental importance in modern physics, particularly quantum theory. His later years, which were marred by personal problems, were largely devoted to the invention and development of his theory of quaternions. Although he believed this work to be his most important, quaternions have been superseded in many applications by the methods of vector and tensor analysis. Of some import, however, was his discovery that the algebra of quaternions does not follow the commutative law; it opened the way for the discovery and development of numerous types of abstract algebras by later mathematicians.

The colonial letters of W.J.W. Hamilton written from Auckland to M. de Cobianchi, Paris, to P. Warburton, London, to his father (Rev. J. V. Hamilton), and to his mother, between 1 June 1844 and 30 September 1845. Some of the seven letters are incomplete.
W.J.W. Hamilton came to New Zealand with Governor FitzRoy in 1843. He was Private Secretary to FitzRoy, and for a short time to Grey, 1843-1845.
After a short spell back in England, Hamilton returned to New Zealand as a survey officer on H.M.S. 'Acheron' in 1848 during which time he made important surveys and explorations in inland North Canterbury and Southland. In August 1850, aged twenty-five, Hamilton was appointed by Governor Grey Resident Magistrate at Wanganui, and in August 1853 Collector of Customs in Canterbury at Lyttelton.
In the first Provincial Council election Hamilton was returned M.P.C. for Lyttelton, the seat he held until 1857. He was a member of Tancred's executive in 1853 and again from 1855 to 1857. In February 1856 Hamilton was appointed a Resident Magistrate in Canterbury and was charged to end the remaining difficulties over land claims with South Island Maoris, repurchasing a large block north of Kaiapoi.
