Description
Hamilton came out to New Zealand as private secretary to Governor FitzRoy in 1844. As such, Hamilton was present at interviews with Maori chiefs of both islands. When FitzRoy was recalled late in 1845, Hamilton continued for a while under Sir George Grey then returned to England in 1846. He returned to New Zealand in 1848 as survey officer on the HMS 'Acheron' and later held many positions of importance in the government departments and the judiciary. The diary gives an account of his travels in Northland, impressions of the natives and political activities.

THE HEART OF THE CITY
WILLIAM BRUCE

17 1/2 King Street East
(pre-1890 address 14 1/2 King Street East) William Bruce was an important character in the early days of Hamilton. He opened a patent office at 17 ½ King Street East in 1867, but he was known for much more than that. Throughout his lifetime, which spanned almost a century, William Bruce helped Hamilton develop into what it is today. After ten years at the grammar school, Bruce began working in a foundry. In 1850, he was apprenticed to a foundry owned by John Fisher and Calvin McQuesten for two dollars a week. In his spare time at work, William would visit other areas of the foundry. He was anxious to learn as much as he could. As was the case in everything Bruce did, he excelled at the factory. His work was shown to journeymen and they were asked why their work was not as good as an apprentice's. At night, William studied the art of penmanship. It was for his beautiful handwriting that William became best known. Bruce was forced to give up his job at the foundry due to a rheumatic condition. In 1854, he went to Oberlin College in Ohio. He took a course in Classics and went to business college. At the same time, he learned to play violin in the conservatory of music. He also worked very hard to support himself during college. He was not ashamed to help farmers during the harvest for ten cents an hour.

    Hamilton, William Hamilton, 2d duke of 1616-51, Scottish nobleman. With his brother James Hamilton, 3d marquess and 1st duke of Hamilton, he gained favor with Charles I of England. He was created (1639) earl of Lanark and made (1640) secretary of state for Scotland. In 1643, on Charles's orders, he was arrested with his brother for supposed implication in the latter's intrigues, but he escaped (1644). He regained favor when he went in 1646 as one of the Scottish commissioners to treat with Charles at Newcastle. In 1647 he was one of the signers for the Scots of the treaty with Charles known as the Engagement, and he helped to organize the second civil war. After the Scottish defeat at Preston (1648), he fled to Holland. He returned in 1650 with Charles II and joined the Scottish invasion of England. He died of wounds received at the battle of Worcester.

    The Life and Work of Sir William Rowan Hamilton:
    Some Nineteenth Century Perspectives
    About this Collection
    This collection contains most of the biographical sketches, obituaries and essays on the life and work of Sir William Rowan Hamilton published in the nineteenth century. The authors are Robert and Charles Graves, Peter Guthrie Tait, Augustus De Morgan, Sir Robert Stawell Ball, Charles Pritchard, Clement Mansfield Ingleby and John Francis Waller. Most of the articles in this collection were published before the appearance of the Life of Sir William Rowan Hamilton by Robert Perceval Graves (Dublin: Hodges, Figgis and Co., 1882, 1885 and 1889), a massive three-volume biography of Hamilton, which includes a very considerable quantity of Hamilton's general correspondence and his poetry. Consequently there are factual inaccuracies in some of the earlier biographical sketches and obituaries included in this collection. In this collection, the most thorough account of Hamilton's mathematical work is to be found in the essay by Peter Guthrie Tait published in the North British Review . A substantial and accurate survey of Hamilton's life is provided by the chapter on Hamilton in Great Astronomers by Sir Robert S. Ball

    Hamilton, William Rowan Irish mathematician whose formulation of Isaac Newton's dynamics proved adaptable to quantum theory, and whose 'quarternion' theory was a forerunner of the branch of mathematics known as vector analysis.
    Hamilton was born in Dublin and educated there at Trinity College. In 1827, while still an undergraduate, he was appointed professor of astronomy and royal astronomer of Ireland.
    Hamilton showed that the sum of two complex numbers could be represented by a parallelogram and that complex numbers could be used, in general, as a useful tool in plane geometry. From couples Hamilton went on to investigate triples and this led him to his great work on quaternions. He began to lecture on them in 1848, and revealed that for quaternions the ordinary commutative principle of multiplication (that is 3 x 4 = 4 x 3) did not work, for
    ij = - ji
    This forced mathematicians to abandon their belief in the commutative principle as an axiom.
    It was Hamilton who coined the word 'vector', and he made it possible to deal with lines in all possible positions and directions and freed them from dependence on Cartesian axes of reference.
