Hausdorff Distance
We talk about points in a space , like in the definition of a circle as a set of all points equidistant from a given point. But we have already pointed to an example of a distance defined between two functions . Functions can also be added and multiplied , and in mathematics sets whose elements are functions are called space s (sometimes, of course, functional spaces .) as many other sets . The advantage is in that, once some common properties of various sets have been isolated, their study will apply to all the particular cases regardless of the nature of elements the sets comprise. It may be confusing sometimes , for example, when we consider spaces of functions or curves or matrices. A point in a space is something elementary, simple and, like an atom (of many years ago), indivisible. But here exactly lies one of the sources from which mathematics draws its power. Going to a level of abstraction that knows nothing of the nature of the objects it deals with spreads the results over vast territory strewn with apparently unrelated objects pointing to unexpected similarities and, by doing so, outlines also the limits of analogy. We not only learn what is common but better understand the differences. Here I wish to consider spaces whose elements - points - are sets themselves. Proving a result on separating points in the plane with circles

Preuss, G. (ed.) Title Recent developments of general topology and its applications - International Conference in Memory of Felix Hausdorff (1868-1942) Publisher Akad. Verlag Year of publication Reviewed by JAN PASEKA
The time of publishing (1992) this proceedings is both the anniversary of one of the main founders of topology - Felix Hausdorff and the hundredth anniversary of the publication of Poincare's first note on topology. The beginning of general topology, also called "point set topology", dates fourteen years later when Frechet published the first abstract treatment of the subject in 1906. 1914 appears the first textbook on general topology "Grundzüge der Mengenlehre" masterly written by Hausdorff. This pioneering monograph secured his international reputation and it was a breakpoint from that the rapid development of classical topology begun. Modern general topology involves such research areas as dimension theory, extension and completion problems, nearness and convergence structures, distance spaces, fractal geometry, fuzzy topology, "pointless topology" and applies to functional analysis and to set theory and logic. These are well-known and most respected names and their articles constitute a quite valuable survey of the recent developments in this field. So, the book represents a sound investment for each good library.

W 1910 r. przeniós³ siê do Bonn, gdzie pracowa³ do 1935 r., w którym zosta³ zmuszony - ze wzglêdu na swe ¿ydowskie pochodzenie - do przej¶cia na emeryturê. The Undergraduate Collection
Math Library General Information The Undergraduate Collection was a collection of classical mathematics books covering the history of mathematics, assembled by Professor Halsey L. Royden and Rebecca Lasher Wesley in the late 1980's. Professor Donald E. Knuth recommended additional books in the mathematical and computer sciences. At the time, Prof. Royden felt that all students of mathematics should become familiar with these works before they left Stanford. They are shelved in the book stacks by call number, and may sometimes be identified by a narrow (not round) bright green strip on the book's spine.

Introduction
When talking about distances, we usually mean the shortest : for instance, if a point X is said to be at distance D of a polygon P, we generally assume that D is the distance from X to the nearest point of P. The same logic applies for polygons : if two polygons A and B are at some distance from each other, we commonly understand that distance as the shortest one between any point of A and any point of B. Formally, this is called a minimin function, because the distance D between A and B is given by : (eq. 1) for every point a of A, find its smallest distance to any point b of B ; finally, keep the smallest distance found among all points a That definition of distance between polygons can become quite unsatisfactory for some applications ; let's see for example fig. 1. We could say the triangles are close to each other considering their shortest distance, shown by their red vertices. However, we would naturally expect that a small distance between these polygons means that no point of one polygon is far from the other polygon. In this sense, the two polygons shown in fig. 1 are not so close, as their furthest points, shown in blue, could actually be very far away from the other polygon. Clearly, the shortest distance is totally independent of each polygonal shape.
