By Keith Phipps Ever since the 1978 debut of Gates Of Heaven a multilayered, funny and strangely moving documentary about pet cemeteriesErrol Morris has stood as one of America's most compelling filmmakers. Setting out to investigate a Florida town with a high incidence of amputations committed intentionally for the sake of insurance fraud, Morris ended up with 1981's equally fascinating Vernon, Florida , even though the completed film is a series of conversations with local residents that have nothing to do with the original subject matter. After some time away from filmmaking, Morris made The Thin Blue Line (1988), his most famous film. Line freed Randall Adams, an innocent man, from death row in Texas. (That Adams subsequently sued him, feeling Morris had profited unfairly from the film, is consistent with the oddities Morris has a habit of unearthing.) An unsuccessful fiction movie (1991's The Dark Wind ) came next, followed by the Stephen Hawking documentary A Brief History Of Time (1992). Morris' latest

46. Warum Stephen Hawking 1991 Vom Teilchenbeschleuniger CERN Unmittelbar Nach Bayre
http://www.heise.de/tp/deutsch/inhalt/buch/7735/1.html
Wagner also hätte Einsteins Raumzeit antizipieren können? Wer Wagner erfahren will, muss erst an René Descartes leiden.

Stephen W. Hawking
Stephen William Hawking, born January 8, 1942, Oxford, England, is one of the leading theoretical physicists in the world. He has been compared to Isaac Newton by some observers. Hawking is Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University (a post once held by Isaac Newton ). His principal areas of research are cosmology and quantum gravity. One of his major contributions to the field of research were his papers on the relationship between black holes and thermodynamics. His research indicated that black holes do not exist forever, but rather that virtual particle pairs created near their event horizons cause them to "evaporate" over time. In spite of being severely disabled by ALS, he is highly active in physics, writing, and public life. His condition forces him to communicate using a computer voice synthesiser. His books A Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nutshell have remained highly popular all over the world and are now classic best-sellers. Anyone interested in universe, cosmos and how it all began can read them: no previous knowledge in this field is required to enjoy these books. [Adapted from Wikipedia Browse

Originally published in 1992 to great acclaim, this updated edition traces the course of Hawking’s life and science, successfully marrying biography and physics to tell the story of a remarkable man. Stephen Hawking is no ordinary scientist. With a career that began over thirty years ago at Cambridge University, he has managed to do more than perhaps any other scientist to broaden our basic understanding of the universe. His theoretical work on black holes and his progress in advancing our knowledge of the origin and nature of the cosmos have been groundbreaking—if not downright revolutionary. Stephen Hawking has also spent much of his adult life confined to a wheelchair, a victim of ALS, a degenerative motor neuron disease. Clearly his physical limitations have done nothing to confine him intellectually. He simply never allowed his illness to hinder his scientific development. In fact, many would argue that his liberation from the routine chores of life has allowed him to focus his efforts more keenly on his science. Hawking certainly would have been remarkable for his cutting edge work in theoretical physics alone. However, he has also managed to popularize science in a way unparalleled by other scientists of his stature. He became a household name, achieving almost cult-like fame, with the release of his best-selling book

http://vassa.net/hawking.htm
A brief history of Stephen Hawking Our modern day Einstein? It's all "media hype", says Stephen Hawking. He is a rare celebrity scientist. He's even had a TV cameo role in Star Trek in which he plays poker with scientific icons Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Yet when asked about comparisons between himself and the two scientists, he calls it all "media hype." Once asked how he felt about being labeled the world's smartest person, he responded: "It is very embarrassing. It is rubbish, just media hype. They just want a hero, and I fill the role model of a disabled genius. At least I am disabled, but I am no genius." Part of Hawking's celebrity stems from his accomplishments in the face of physical adversity. Hawking has ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig's disease, a neuromuscular disease that progressively weakens muscle control. As a 21-year-old graduate student in cosmology at Cambridge University, doctors predicted an early death for him. Today, he's 56 and married with three children. He gets around in a wheelchair, and after completely losing the use of his vocal chords in an operation to assist his breathing in 1985, he communicates through a computer. A speech synthesizer "speaks" for him after he punches in what he wants to say, selecting words in the computer software by pressing a switch with his hand. Unfortunately, it makes him sound like he has an American accent, he says.
