A Study of Abstraction and Genericity in Pure Functional Programming Languages
Not yet submitted. (November 1995) Abstract: The purpose of this project was to study abstraction and genericity in pure functional languages, and to compare them with those provided by a high-level imperative programming language, i.e. Ada 95, since Ada is known for the quality of its design and the power of its basic mechanisms. One important criterion of analysis was the approach to and ease of composition of abstractions. This analysis is carried in the context of a proposed model of abstraction. This model distinguishes the properties condensed by an abstraction and the particular, omitted measurements of these properties-to account for the relationship between concretes and the abstraction subsuming them. Generalization and specialization, two kinds of relationships between abstractions, are described in the same context. Successful libraries of reusable components depend on the development of powerful abstractions and their ease of composition. This requires careful analysis and fruitful design choices. A far-sighted choice of abstractions is possible only if one is not blinded by the programming language or paradigm used.

List of Known Peirce Correspondents
This list includes names of persons Peirce sent letters to and/or received letters from, either probably or certainly, and names of people who wrote letters concerning Peirce, a few of which Peirce had copies of, that have been retrieved in different archives. The list also includes names of institutions. We strongly wish that readers interested in this list would look for a number of the names in their local archives in the hope of finding new Peirce-related letters. We expect that thousands of letters by Peirce still survive in unsearched archives both in the U.S. and abroad. Please join the effort in their recovery!

Abstract
Ada 9X, the revised definition of the Ada programming language, provides support for object-oriented programming. This course examines the new, object-oriented features of the language, their use, and how they fit into Ada's strong type system and genericity mechanisms. Basic object-oriented mechanisms are covered, such as: extension, inheritance, and polymorphism. We then show how to integrate these mechanisms into good programming practice; topics include incremental programming, heterogeneous data structures, and mixin inheritance. The running theme is design for reuse.
Objectives
The tutorial is intended to present the object-oriented extensions of Ada 9X and to teach their methodological use. It demonstrates how Ada 9X supports the creation and use of reusable software components.

Not Slothful in Business: Macleod, Kempe and the Glass of Govan Old Parish Church By Philip N. H. Collins and Adrian Barlow This dramatic presentation of the Govan correspondence was devised by Philip N. H. Collins and written by Adrian Barlow. It was performed ( with illustrative slides ) at the launch event on Saturday 7th July 1990 within the Steven Chapel. Adrian Barlow took the part of the Narrator, Philip Collins the part of Charles Eamer Kempe, and Gilbert Bell used his Scots tongue to give flavour to the Govan 'voices'. All three speakers are members of the Kempe Society. Our connection with the Kempe Society was established by Mr. William Murray, formerly Organist at Govan Old. The correspondence between Kempe and his studio and Dr. John Macleod and Govan Parish has been published by the Kempe Society as 'The Govan Correspondence'. The original letters and accounts are deposited by Govan Old at the Strathclyde Regional Archive, located in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow. Narrator 'Not Slothful in Business', the title of our talk, is part of the inscription to be found on the East window of this Church. This window was installed as a memorial to Dr. John Macleod; and the full text of the inscription, approved by the Kirk Session in March 1899, reads as follows:

Metaline Cemetery
Pend Oreille County, Washington
T39N R43E Sec 29
Lat: 48°51'15"N, Lon: 117°23'33"W Submitted by Maggie Rail, Dec 25, 2002 [ mrail@cet.com ]. Total records = 305. To reach the cemetery, take the first road to your left as you are driving north into Metaline on Hwy 20. It is up a rather steep incline, then keep to the left. The cemetery is at the end of the road. The town is small if you get lost, just ask someone. The cemetery is owned and well maintained by the town of Metaline. When I was reading it, there was a survey team working the cemetery, replatting it. They said it was difficult because there was no planning with the first burials. They were trying to lay it out with a better plan and still utilize the most space. There were areas with the white wooden crosses, telling me I do not have all of the names for this cemetery. I will continue to try to find old records to add. If anyone knows a name I do not have with proof they are buried here, please let me know. I walked and read this cemetery on Aug 18, 2002. This reading includes all visible headstones. I have a photo of each marker if anyone should want one, I am willing to share. There may be some I did not get a good photo of.
