However, he made influential contributions to many fields of mathematics, including geometry and differential equations. In this paper De Morgan demonstrates his keen interests in computational methods. Building on an old method by Legendre, he proposes two new approaches to solving partial differential equations, using an intricate change of variables. Volumes of the Transactions of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, where De Morgan published most of his logical papers, are very rare. De Morgan, Augustus British mathematician who initiated and developed a theory of relations in logic. He devised a symbolism that could express such notions as the contradictory, the converse, and the transitivity of a relation, as well as the union of two relations. De Morgan was born in Madura (now Madurai), Tamil Nadu, India, and studied at Cambridge. He was the first professor of mathematics at University College, London, 1828-58. In his books Formal Logic 1847 and Syllabus of a Proposed System of Logic, De Morgan developed a logic of noun expressions. He also extended his syllogistic vocabulary using definitions, giving rise to new kinds of inferences, both direct (involving one premise) and indirect (involving two premises). He was thus able to work out purely structural rules for transforming a premise or pair of premises into a valid conclusion.

De Morgan was sent to various schools. He had a gift for drawing caricatures, and read algebra ‘like a novel.’ He pricked out equations on the school-pew, some of which remained after his death, instead of listening to the sermon. In February 1823 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, as a ‘bye-term man.’ He made many friends at college, including his teachers, Whewell and Peacock. He belonged to a musical society called the ‘Camus’ (i.e. Cambridge Amateur Musical Union Society), and was a skilful flute-player. After some thoughts of medicine he resolved to go to the bar, and entered Lincoln's Inn. The university of London, which afterwards became University College, was just being started. De Morgan found law unpalatable, and on 23 Feb. 1828 was unanimously elected the first professor of mathematics, although the youngest applicant, on the strength of very high testimonials from Peacock, Airy, and other Cambridge authorities. He gave his introductory lecture, ‘On the Study of Mathematics,’ 5 Nov. 1828. From the first De Morgan was a most energetic worker. In May 1828 he was elected a fellow of the Astronomical Society, and in 1830 was placed on the council. He became a member of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, founded by Brougham and others in 1826. He became a member of the committee in 1843. The society was dissolved in 1846. In the vacation of 1837 De Morgan married Sophia Elizabeth Frend, and settled at 69 Gower Street. His lectures at University College attracted many men, afterwards distinguished. He had the power of clear exposition. He never became a fellow of the Royal Society, and held that it was too much open to social influences to be thoroughly efficient as a working institution. His dislike to honorary titles led him to refuse the offer of the LL.D. degree from Edinburgh. For many years he did his best to promote the adoption of a decimal coinage.

Augustus de Morgan British logician and mathematician. Boole and he invented symbolic logic, i.e. logic expressed in terms of algebraic operations. In addition, he was a powerful advocate of the Laplacian method of inverse probability in the Britain; thus his work on probability theory and his analysis of scientific inference by means of probability theory are also important. His name is associated with various miscellaneous problems. One of them is the famous "Four Color Problem": four colors are sufficient for distinguishing each area from any adjacent area by a different color from each other, on any map (this is a sloppy formulation, but a precise one can be given!). One day in October 1852, a student asked de Morgan whether this problem can be solved, and de Morgan in turn asked William Rowan Hamilton, a boss mathematician of the day in the Britain. Thus a long struggle with this problem began, and it was solved by K. Appel and W. Haken in 1976, by employing large computers at the University of Illinois.

Grattan-Guinness We know that mathematicians care no more for logic than logicians for mathematics. The two eyes of exact science are mathematics and logic, the mathematical sect puts out the logical eye, the logical sect puts out the mathematical eye; each believing that it sees better with one eye than with two. This quotation, from De Morgan in 1868, shows him at his best, The point made is surprising but profoundly true, both in his time and still in ours; he is one of the few to have worked in both disciplines, so that the statement is self-referential; and it is so again in a personal way, for he himself had sight in only one eye, so that his wit shines especially strongly here. In this paper a brief survey of his career and achievement is followed by somewhat more detailed remarks on his contribution, via both mathematics and logic, to mathematical education. He passed his entire career there, broken only by a resignation for five years from 1831 as a protest against administrative practices. He resigned again in 1866 (five years before his death), to be succeeded by his former student T. A. Hirst (1830-1892). His other principal students were W. S. Jevons (1835-1882), best remembered now for his work in economics but then also very well known as a logician; and W. K. Clifford (1845-1879), who obtained the companion chair in applied mathematics at University College in 1874. Little is known, however, about his career and general effectiveness as a teacher.
