Berlin Circle
Erkenntnis edit by R. Carnap and H. Reichenbach, and organized several congresses on scientific philosophy, the first of which held in Prague in 1929. Members of Berlin Circle were particularly active in analyzing contemporary physics, especially the theory of relativity, and in developing the frequency interpretation of the probability. After the rise of Nazism, several of them emigrated from Germany. Reichenbach moved to Turkey in 1933 and to USA in 1938; Hempel to Belgium in 1934 and to USA in 1939; Grelling was killed in a concentration camp. Hence the Berlin Circle was dispersed. SORITES , ISSN 1135-1349 Issue #11. December 1999. Pp. 66-81. Are There Mental Entities? Some Lessons from Hans Reichenbach by Jeanne Peijnenburg 0. Introduction `The mental and the physical are not made for each other', wrote Davidson, echoing Brentano's famous thesis that the intentional idiom is irreducible. But if mental terms cannot be translated into physical terms, how can they be translated? What is the meaning of mental terms such as `belief', `desire', `intention'? Or to put it ontologically: what sort of entities are beliefs, desires, intentions? These questions are core issues in the contemporary philosophy of mind, and the answers are many. Beliefs and desires have been related to actions, to brain processes and to computer programs. The relations in question have been pictured as reductions, as superveniences, as emergence relations, as type- and as token-identities. Nowadays there exists a whole gamut of different positions on the mental: there is physicalism, eliminativism, behaviourism, functionalism, parallelism, epiphenomenalism, interactionism, anomalous monism, and, last but not least, transcendentalism. In this paper I propose to discuss Hans Reichenbach's views on the mental, especially his views on

From: Philosophy Research Archives X, (1984) pp. 501-511 The Hans Reichenbach Correspondence An Overview Saul Traiger Department of Philosophy Occidental College Los Angeles, CA 90041 The Hans Reichenbach Collection is part of the Archives of Twentieth Century Philosophy of Science, which also houses the Rudolf Carnap and Frank Ramsey Collections. The Archives of Twentieth Century Philosophy of Science is located in the Special Collections Department of the University of Pittsburgh's Hillman Library. In the past few years work on the recently acquired Hans Reichenbach Collection has resulted in a useful research source. Although the collection contains many notes, manuscripts, and recordings, efforts at organizing the collection have centered on the wealth of correspondence contained in the collection. A great deal of this organizational work has now been completed, and this part of the collection is open to study by interested scholars. What follows is an overview of the correspondence catalogued in the collection. All of the information recorded here has been found in the many thousand letters to and from Reichenbach which make up only a portion of the collection. The purpose of this essay is both to acquaint the philosophical public with the wealth of material in this research source and to argue for the importance of this material for the history of recent philosophy. The Nature and Scope of the Correspondence The correspondence spans the period from 1919 to 1970. Although Hans Reichenbach died in the Spring of l953, there are many letters which postdate his death, the letters of his widow, Maria Reichenbach. Maria Reichenbach played a major role in the postumous publication of many of her husband's works and her correspondence largely concerns such issues. The correspondence of Hans Reichenbach begins with the year 1919. At that time, Reichenbach was an

Philosophic Foundations of Quantum Mechanics by Hans Reichenbach Hans Hans Reichenbach
Reichenbach's book is a classic text, the first (I think) to focus on the philosophical aspects of quantum mechanics. Since it was written around the time that quantum mechanics was born, it does not deal with modern discussion on the subject. Reichenbach does solid work, however, and this is a valuable resource for anyone interested in these issues. The book has three sections. The first is an overview of his conclusions and the implications of quantum mechanics. This section is lucid and relatively non-technical, it should be intelligible to anyone. The second section is an in-depth technical introduction to the formalism of quantum mechanics. Anyone, if determined enough, could get through this part, though it's pretty hairy going for those without a formal background in physics or mathematics. In the last section, he reaches his conclusions and introduces a system of logic to deal with the truth value of propositions about quantum mechanics. Chris Meacham

    Hans Reichenbach
From Elements of Symbolic Logic , 1947 by H. Reichenbach A logic of this kind, which is called three-valued , was constructed by J. Lucasiewicz [sic] and [this false] A. Tarski, and independently, [this false] by E. L. Post . Such logical systems are consistent and offer certain advantages when they are used for the language of the physics of the microcosm. Cf. the author's Philosophic Foundations of Quantum Mechanics New York : MacMillan 1947, Note p. 180. From Philosophic Foundations of Quantum Mechanics , 1944 by H. Reichenbach Constructions of multivalued logics were first given, independently, [this questionable] by E. L. Post [who, so far as I know, had never claimed that (WPT)] and by J. Lucasiewicz [sic] and [this questionable and probably false] A. Tarski. Since that time, such logics have been much discussed, and fields of applications have been sought for ; the original publications left the question of application open and the writers restricted themselves to the formal construction of a calculus. The construction of a logic of probability, in which a continuous scale of truth values is introduced, has been given by the author. This logic corresponds more to classical physics than to quantum mechanics. Since, in it, every proposition has a determinate probability, it has no room for a truth value of indeterminacy ; a probability of 1/2 is not what is meant by the category

    The Hans Reichenbach Collection
Hans Reichenbach was also born in 1891, in Hamburg. He studied engineering first but became increasingly interested in the theoretical aspects of science. This led him to study mathematics, physics, and philosophy, and in 1915 he received his doctorate from the University of Erlangen. After serving in the German army during the First World War, Reichenbach attended Einstein's lectures in Berlin, and in 1926 he received a faculty appointment there. During this time Reichenbach produced a series of works dealing with the problems of space and time as represented in the new physics. The best known of these is Philosophie der Raum-Zeit-Lehre Philosophy of Space and Time Reichenbach anticipated difficulties in German academia after the rise of National Socialism. In 1933 he accepted a five-year appointment at the University of Istanbul. Though isolated philosophically and scientifically in Turkey, there he produced his major work on the problem of induction, Wahrscheinlichkeitslehre Theory of Probability , 1935), and his major epistemological work, Experience and Prediction (1938). In 1938 Reichenbach emigrated to the United States, where he taught at UCLA until his death in 1953. In America he wrote

Hans Reichenbach One of the heavyweights of "hard-core" philosophy of science. He was born in Hamburg and studied in many universities in Germany, such as Stuttgart (Technische Hochshule), Berlin, Munich, Goettingen and Erlangen. After teaching at Istanbul for several years, he moved to University of California (Los Angeles) in 1938. On the heyday of logical empiricism, he edited Erkenntnis with Carnap. He made many important contributions to the philosophy of probability and induction, of quantum mechanics and other fields, but by far the most important is his philosophy of space, time and geometry. Drawing on Riemann, Helmholtz, Poincare, and Einstein, he advocated the coventionalist position, and he was also a powerful advocate of the causal theory of time-that time structure can be derived from causal structure together with conventional elements which he called "coordinative definitions". His view is maintained with some modifications by such philosophers as Gruenbaum, although there appeared many criticisms among younger generations of philosophers of science, such as Friedman or Earman.
